The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is a manga by Akira Himekawa loosely based on the story of the iconic Nintendo 64 game of the same name. It was released in Japan by Shogakukan in 2000 and made available in English through VIZ Media in 2008.

Volume two contains two extra chapters at the end: "The Skull Kid and the Mask", narrating the meeting of Skull Kid, and "Rouru of the Watarara", involving the manga-only Watarara race.

A Legendary Edition containing both volumes of the manga was released in Japan on March 10, 2016 and was released in North America on November 1, 2016. This premium edition features new cover art, color pages, sketches and character designs, and new stories and materials.^[7][8]

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (Himekawa), itself a loose adaptation of Majora's Mask, is its direct sequel.

Part One[]

The contents of the first volume of the manga are broken into two parts with a total of ten chapters. The contents are as follows:

Ocarina of Time[]

• Chapter 1: The Great Deku Tree Incident

The story begins with a little baby boy crying out as his mother rides away from a burning palace in a tense thunderstorm. Though she manages to reach a large eastern forest and give her baby to a large and great guardian tree, her wounds prove fatal, leading to her death. A decade has passed, and an opening narration tells of the large forest in eastern Hyrule, called Kokiri Forest, and the a race of small child like forest folk, the Kokiris, that live there each have their own fairy; however, there is one person who does not yet have a fairy of his own; a ten-year old boy named Link, who is taking a nap on a tree. Later, the Great Deku Tree, the guardian of the forest, is telling the story of three aspectral golden goddesses shaping the continent and kingdom of Hyrule, stating the first goddess to be Din, who brought fire and sculpted a reddened land, the second, Nayru, who brought law and order to the world via her wisdom. While he is about to speak about the third goddess, Link, having woken up, is rushing to the Great Tree's glade, and accidentally jumps onto a Kokiri villager, though he does apologize, stating the Great Deku Tree's fable is almost over and that he is in a hurry. Link is soon stopped by Mido and his friends, who try to block him, with Mido stating to Link to wait and that he cannot go in there, with the first friend agreeing with him. Link asks why not, as he can go wherever he wants, to which the second friend disagrees with. Mido states that he is the Kokiri chieftain and that he and his friends cannot let someone as defective as Link listen to the Great Deku tree's stories, with the first friend agreeing with him once again. Link asks what Mido is talking about and tries to get Mido and his friends to move aside, but Mido taunts Link that he will have to show his fairy if he is to get inside, leading to a tussle between Link and Mido, with Link trying to get payback by putting a squeeze on Mido's left shin and exclaiming it will teach him for calling Link 'defective', only for Mido's fairy to headbutt Link into a pond. The other two bullies further taunt Link, one of them calling him 'defective' once again and the other stating it is what he gets for messing with Mido. Link accuses Mido and his friends of cheating, but Mido counters by asking who is cheating, stating that his fairy is a part of him, just like his limbs. The Great Deku Tree intervenes by asking what is going on in the grove, forcing Mido and his friends to retreat, with Mido calling Link a 'no-fairy loser' in the midst of this as they flee. The Great Tree tells Link not to pay any mind to Mido and tries to cheer the boy up, but Link asks why he is different from the other forest folk, with the Great Deku Tree telling Link he will find out when the moment is opportune, though Link complains that is what he always says. Thankfully, Saria appears onto the scene calling to Link, and Link calls to her in turn, stating it is perfect timing and he has something to show her. When Saria asks what it is, Link shows her a slingshot, stating he made it by himself. Saria asks what it is for, to which Link explains it can be used to get fruits that are too high to reach; he demonstrates this by bringing a fruit down from a tree. Impressed, Saria requests for Link to let her try it. Mido and his friends oversee this from the bushes, with Mido jealously snarling that Link is flirting with Saria again before he is hit on the forehead with a deku nut when Saria accidentally fires the nut at him, though both Saria and Link are confused by this. Later, Saria then praises Link for his craftsmanship, with Link stating he is strange, adding he that is why he has to wait the longest to get his fairy. Saria states that even if Link does not have a fairy he is her very best friend. Link agrees, and they both play some music on Saria's ocarina, a Fairy Ocarina, before Link recounts to Saria a dream he keeps getting of standing before a large house with pointy towers. Saria corrects him, saying it sounds like a palace or a castle. Link asks if Saria has seen one of them in the forest, wondering to himself why something he does not know about show up in his dreams, and Saria states that the Great Tree said that very structure is beyond the forest and across a grassy plain, and that the world is wide with many different countries. Later that night, Link wonders what the rest of the planet is like and what is out there, all those things in his dream he not seen before, and that if the he told the Great Tree he wanted to leave forest, then he would let him, or he might not, before drifting to sleep. Then, laughter is heard, and a large and savage one-eyed spider named Gohma appears in the forest. The Great Deku Tree goes on the defensive, asking the beast who goes there, that no evil will enter his forests and that the beast will not pass, but she leaps forward and proceeds to feed on his energies, taunting him on his inability to move, thus placing a curse on the Great Tree. Navi, a blue fairy, appears, telling the Great Deku Tree to hang in there. The Great Deku tree tells her that an evil thing, Gohma, is inside him, and that he cannot move at all. Navi asks what she should do, and the Great Deku Tree states the forest is in mortal peril, and instructs her to find Link, the boy with out a fairy, and bring him to the Great Tree, and to go with haste. Nearby, Mido is right outside of Link's house, a Kokiri saw in hand, stating that with it he will cut a hole next to Link's bed, and when he would wake up, he would fall right through. With the prank planned, Mido climbs on the ladder and gets right to work on cutting a selected portion of the porch as Navi flies inside, whispering his name twice, and then calling for him to wake up, which he does with a jolt. Navi introduces herself to Link, stating she was sent to the Great Deku Tree. Suddenly estatic, Link tries to catch her, hollering that he finally has a fairy, with Navi pleading for him not to touch her. Link makes to get outside and brag to Mido, with Navi stating to him there is no time for that, and he then falls through the hole in his porch and onto Mido's back. Link notcies he is sitting on Mido and asks what he is doing on Link's frontyard, with Mido asking what is it to him, requesting for him to get off. Suddenly, the vegetation begins to wither. Link states that the plants are wilting, and Mido replies that the trees are as well, stating he has never seen something like it before. Navi reports to them that something evil has entered the forest, that the Great Tree is in dire trouble, telling them to hurry.

• Chapter 2: Link's Journey Begins

Link and Mido are the first to arrive, and Link tries to ask the Great Tree what has happened, banging on the Great Tree's bark and begging for an answer. Mido replies that the forest guardian is cold, like he is nearly dead. Saria calls to Link and Mido when she and the rest of the Kokiri arrive onto the scene to try and aid the Great Deku Tree. Laughter is heard echoing from within the depths, catching Link off guard; Gohma's single eye opens, and she fully appears, giving Link and even Mido quite a fright. Navi explains that this the beast who cursed the Great Deku Tree. The Kokiris hide behind Link in terror, and Gohma demands the wherabouts of a certain gem and to give it to her before disappearing through the doorway and into the depths, her insidious laughter echoing from within, as Mido and his friends shiver in fear. His slingshot poised, Link states he will get the Gohma and rushes inside to take the beast down despite Saria's calling to him, with Mido following him armed with his shortsword, the Kokiri Sword. The two boys and Navi descend deeper and deeper into the crypt, with Link scolding Mido not to get too excited. Mido tells Link to get quiet and remarks that he cannot let him show off to Saria by himself. Link ponders what Mido is speaking about, and Mido retorts he cannot let Link have Saria, and calls out to the monster to come out, complaining what is with these lines of sticky web like goo in the process. Navi senses something strange, and Gohma demands the stone and its whereabouts while chewing on the Great Tree's bark from within. Link asks if Gohma is eating the Great Deku Tree, and she turns her attention to the boys and asks if she would take a bite out of them both, to Mido's horror. Link demands the beast to return the Great Tree to normal despite his futile efforts on shooting her, but she insists on demanding the gem. Link states it is no use and dashes away, wondering to himself what stone the beast is speaking about. Mido is frozen with horror despite having the Kokiri Sword at the ready, right as Navi is warning Link of Mido. Link shoves Mido out of the beast's way and scolds him for freezing up, but Mido requests for him to be quiet and let him be, and Link is then hit on the head by a stray rock. When Link dodges another of Gohma's attacks, he lands back first in the sticky spider silk and is trapped, unable to move as he tries to punture the beast's hide with every shot from his slingshot, warning her not to come any closer to him, down to the last deku nut in his left hand, and he is easy prey. Mido intervenes, distracting the beast with rocks thrown all over the room, with Navi asking where he is aiming, with one of the rocks striking Gohma's eye which has her screeching in agony and trembling about. Having figured the beast's weakness out, Navi flies to Link and states that Gohma's weakness is her eyeball, instructing him to go for the eye. Link fires a deku nut from his slingshot that skewers Gohma through her eye, reducing her to a mere beetle. Link states that so that is what Gohma looks like, which Mido adds that she is just a tiny bug. The boys report their victory over Gohma, and they are congratulated by the Great Tree for breaking the curse through their combined strength. Sadly, the purification is in vain when Great Tree states his life cannot be saved, which devastates Link when he begs the Great Tree not to die, stressing that he fought so hard to break the curse and this cannot be happening. With ounces of strength remaining, the Great Deku Tree tells Link to listen closely and reveals that while Gohma was eating at him, he could read her thoughts, for he knows she too had been cursed. He then reveals that a tall and sinister man in obsidian armor, described as the king of a race of mortals in the black desert, is the perpetrator of the curse placed upon Gohma and plots to go after a most sacred and holy relic and wrest control of Hyrule. Curious, Link asks what the relic is, and the Great Tree reveals that this holy relic, called the Triforce, has held the powers of the gods for centuries, and anyone who touches it can reshape the planet in the user's image; those who do good and are pure of heart will make the planet good; though those with ill and evil hearts that touch it, and the planet will be consumed with evil, finishing that an awful evil is coming to Hyrule and they cannot allow the dark lord to take the relic and that if Link has the courage, he can defeat his plans. Link bemoans why him and states he cannot defeat someone so scary, but the Great Tree tells him he can, telling him to learn about the world and grow big, telling him to go to a large palace called Hyrule Castle, that there is a princess who was chosen by the gods, and to give her the stone the dark overlord desired so much he placed the curse on the Great Tree, the Kokiri's Emerald, which Link is rewarded, with the Great Tree finishing that he is counting on him. With newfound confidence, Link states his understanding with gratitude. With these last words, The Great Deku Tree instructs Link to make a shield from his remains, stating it will protect him from all manner of evil, telling Navi to help Link too as he is counting on her as well before bidding a final farewell to the forest folk present, and they, even Mido, all mourn. The next morning, Link takes the Kokiri Sword from Mido and fashions a Deku Shield from a piece of the Great Tree's remains, and he and Navi prepare to leave the forest. Mido asks where Link and Navi are going, stating that Kokiri cannot leave the forest nor live outside of it. Link states he wants to see the outside world, to see how big it is and what is out there with his eyes, promising to return after delivering the Kokiri's Emerald. Still judgmental, Mido has Link take the Kokiri sword and directs him to leave and never return, and Link rushes off, with Mido calling him a jerk in the process. When Link is about to fully exit the forest, Saria asks if he is leaving. Link states he's always thought he was different from everyone, like he was from somewhere, stating the forest is his home. Saria agrees, giving Link the Fairy Ocarina as a present and reminding him to play it sometimes and remember the forest, and, accompanied by Navi, Link's journey begins, watched over by a large eagle-owl who follows him, stating that the boy's journey has begun, that the fate of the lands of Hyrule rests in the the hands of one young boy, wondering if he is up for the task, vowing that in honor of a long friendship with the Great Deku tree he will be the one to guide and protect Link along the way.

• Chapter 3: The Mystery of the Triforce

Out in the open plains, Link is sitting on the back of on a farmer's cart. As the farmer is carrying a supply of food and milk to a large city, Link comments on the size of the empire's countryside, with Navi stating it is a good thing they had ran into the cart. While Link gets a much need drink via a bottle of milk, he asks if the person at the palace they need to meet is named Zelda, to which Navi confirms, stating they need to give the Kokiri's Emerald to her, and reminding Link to never mess this chance up. The farmer states they have arrived at the city - the Hyrule Castle Town. He soon explores the city's marketplace, stating this must be the world, and it has more people, and asking Navi which one of the structures is the palace, as the bell from a nearby cathedral rings. However, Link's stomach growls, and he states that after all that traveling he is starving, with Navi reminding him to hang in there and that he had a bottle of milk. A food merchant bids them welcome, stating the food is cheap and that they will be sorry if they do not stop and look, and Link tries to sate his hunger, stating how good it tastes and the food in the market is better tasting than the fruit in Kokiri Forest, though he is set upon by four merchants, with one of them asking if Link has money for all that food. Link asks what money is even though his mouth is full of food, with some merchants calling him 'impudent brat' or 'thief' as an ordinary city girl appears on the scene to overhear the fuss. The merchant with sideburns hoists Link off the concrete, making him thrash his arms and legs about, and the merchant with big lips sifts through Link's tunic pocket and grabs the Kokiri's Emerald, asking what they have there, to Link's horror. Link pleads for the merchants to give the gem back to him, but the merchants request that he has to pay for his meal and he can have the gem back. Luckily, the girl arrives at the right time to defuse the situation by telling the merchants to wait, offering to pay for Link and directing the merchants to give the jewel back to him via an exchange of two hundred rupees. When Link asks who she is, the girl remarks it is of no matter, directing him to hurry along. After taking Link to a large water fountain at the city square, the girl states if Link is from the eastern forest, to which Link confirms, saying his gratitude and that the gem is important to him. The girl states it is a beautiful gem, and Link tells her it is the Kokiri's Emerald, as the Great Deku Tree told him to give it to Princess Zelda. The girl asks really, and Link says that that is why he has to go to the palace. The girl notifies Link that he cannot go to the palace alone, as the palace guards can be strict. Link is shocked, asking Navi what they should do. The girl strikes with him a deal: play a few games with her and she will take him to see Zelda. Link asks really, and the girl states that Zelda is her friend and shows him a blue ocarina as proof. When Link inspects a mysterious crest on the mouthpiece, the girl notices someone coming and hides behind the water fountain to avoid being seen, and Link is soon met with a commanding presence from a high ranking ninja and a pair of warriors and who are looking for what the former describes as a little noble girl with blonde hair and light blue eyes. Link fearfully states he has not, and when the ninja and the warrior guards head elsewhere, Navi asks Link if he is certain about it, stating there might be something strange with the girl. Link replies the girl said she would take him to Zelda. Then the two spend the afternoon playing in the city shops, buying lunch in the form of a bag of goron manju with the girl stating she bought a bunch and that the merchant stated she was cute, bowling in a bombchu alley with Link asking if Zelda is pretty, the girl replying she might guess, with Link turning to Navi and rudely remarking the princess to be 'ugly', to the girl's displeasure, before getting bowled by a bombchu and covered in soot, and then in a mask shop, and lastly in an archery hall with both getting perfect shots and rewards. Later that night, Link states that was a fun time, noticing that it is already evening and time flies. Then the girl thanks Link for spending time with her, stating she wanted to go out on her own and play like a normal girl. Link requests for her to tell her name, introducing himself, and stating they ought to play again sometime. When the girl is about to state her name, the two are preyed upon by a trio of Gerudo brigands. Link asks who the three women are, and they demand the girl hand them the blue ocarina that they call the Ocarina of Time, scimitars at the ready, but she dashes away. Link holds his ground against the brigands for a short time, with one of the brigands asking who Link is. A second brigand states someone is coming, and the thugs retreat, with Link chasing after them as he tries to get them to stop. Before the girl can follow after him, the ninja, who is named Impa, the Sheikah chieftain, appears behind her, saying the girl's rank of 'princess' and stating she is glad she is safe and that it is time to come back to the palace. The girl complies. Afterward, Link notices the girl is gone, with Navi stating she went home and that some girls can be slightly fickle, and he then finds the blue ocarina in the city square. Navi states time is wasted and they have to get to the palace. Link states the ocarina the girl showed him is hers, thinking that this ocarina resembles the one Saria gave him albeit it is different. The next morning, Zelda begs her father, the King, not to meet an evil man, but he refuses to listen, stating this is a time of peace. Shortly later, Link climbs up a vine through a window and bypases the guards on his way to the palace courtyard, where he realizes the girl he met the day before was unveiled to be Princess Zelda in disguise when she introduces herself, and he sheepishly takes the Ocarina of Time from his bag and hands it to her, stating she should have told him sooner, much to Zelda's dismay. However, a man clad in obsidian armor named Ganondorf, the King of the Gerudo tribe, appears onto the scene, saying his greetings and stating he has met with Zelda's father, and Zelda scolds him for entering the courtyard without permission. Ganondorf apologizes for the tresspass and states that cementing relations between Hyrule and the Gerudo is an honor, adding that this is a land filled with beauty, finalizing on Zelda's beauty with a statement that she is the most beautiful one of all. Still ticked off, Zelda directs him to save the flattery and leave her presence, which leaves Link shocked. Ganondorf states that Zelda possesses the Ocarina of Time, the greatest treasure of the royal family of Hyrule, asking if she can show the instrument to him later. Zelda denies knowing about it, stating a gang of thieves asked her the same thing the other day and that they happened to be aquaintances of his. Ganondorf sees that Link is staring defiantly at him and retreats. Zelda tells Link of Ganondorf's status as the Gerudo chieftain as they live in the western desert, stating that while Ganondorf is swearing loyalty to Hyrule, she knows his true plan is to aquire the Triforce, and she then goes on to explain the tale of the Triforce as well as a legendary hero carrying a green gem shining brightly, later stating that Link is the one from Zelda's dreams, Ganondorf being the black cloud that threatens to destroy the kingdom, bemoaning that her father does not believe her. Link, on the other hand, states to her that he does believe her, stating that Ganondorf murdered the Great Deku Tree via his evil. Zelda continues that they cannot let Ganondorf aquire the Triforce, revealing that both the relic and the mythical Sacred Realm are hidden in the Temple of Time, sealed by a stone wall, finalizing that Link will need all three Spiritual Stones and bring them to the time door with the Ocarina of TIme. Link volunteers to accept the task, stating his intent on finding the other two spiritual stones and then come back. Zelda states Link needs to keep the Triforce out of the dark demonlord's grasp.

• Chapter 4: The Search for the Spiritual Stone of Fire!

Zelda recounts a legend of the three golden goddesses themselves - Din, Nayru, and Farore - shaping the kingdom of Hyrule and creating the Sacred Realm, finishing it is the secret story passed on to each generation of the royal family. Link questions if Zelda is certain on telling the tale, and she explains her mother told her this story before her death, instructing her to never tell this or the Ocarina of Time to anyone, for she knows only Link believes her, and even her father did not believe her, finishing she believes in him. Link sheepishly admits he did not do anything special, and is spooked when Impa appears in the palace courtyard in a most ninja-esque fashion. Zelda erases all fears from Link by introducing him to Impa and Impa to Link, stating he is the messenger from the eastern forest. Impa states she was watching Link all day the day before, even with his fisticuffs with the Gerudo, which shocks Link, and Zelda asks if Impa sees everything. When Link asks where the other two spiritual stones are, Impa states that she does know know where the Zora's Sapphire is, but she did recieve reports that Darunia, the Goron chieftain, is in possession of the Goron's Ruby. Link tells Zelda not to worry, confident that he will find the other two gems before Ganondorf can on his vow. Zelda states she will make certain Ganondorf does not get his hands on the Ocarina of Time and then reminds Link to take caution upon kissing his left cheek, though that gets him running around the palace in a trance, with some of the guards trying to catch him, with Navi begging Link to not forget about her. Grabbing Link by the center of his tunic, Impa reminds the palace guards not to worry for she will escort Link out and snaps him out of the stupor with a thrust on a window sill, and then shows Link a large volcano called Death Mountain, the home of the goron people, stating they must defend the kingdom of Hyrule, and that the peace of the kingdom depends on his courage. Jumping through the window, Link tells her to leave it all to him and heads off for the volcano. Navi wonders what Saria would say if they told her they were going to save Hyrule and scolds Link for having his head full of Princess Zelda and that he had forgotten about Saria. Link denies the latter, and remembers to play the Fairy Ocarina. As soon as he does, it draws the attention of a sorrel filly, who follows him about due to the music, and Link soon asks the foal if she likes music. Link hops atop her back and rides onward, unaware of a farmer girl his age calling the filly's name; Epona. During the ride on the volcano's steep slopes, Link asks himself if this is where people live, and comes across a goron, who states this is where gorons live, as it is much too dangerous. Link requests to meet Darunia so he can obtain the Goron's Ruby. In Goron City, Link meets Darunia, who refuses to give the gem to Link, claiming it holds the spirit of the gorons. Link questions if Darunia does not want Ganon to usurp Hyrule. Darunia then reminds him to pipe down, and after a taste test on rocks that are foul tasting, he states that he and his tribe are geovores, meaning 'rock-eaters', revealing that a giant dragon-like dinosaur and his smaller kin living in a nearby cave are behaving aggressively, causing a food shortage and forcing the gorons to hunt for their signature rocks, leaving them with little time to deal with twerps like Link, requesting Link that if he wants the Goron's Ruby, he must show courage by slaying the ancient dodongo alpha, King Dodongo. A goron child states he is hungry and needs food. One of the gorons states that the goron child has had no food for a month, stating if something is not done, the child will perish from starvation. Link accepts the task, requesting the goron to lead him to the cave. The goron initially refuses, stating that the cave and the area's dinosaurs are scary, though Link repllies he is the one dying from starvation. At the cave entrance, the goron asks if Link is going in there, stating that five of his friends went searching for food to stave the food shortage and they never came out of the cave again. Accompanied by the goron and Epona, Link traverses the cave, coming across a bed of unusually round flowers and asking what they are, and the goron reveals they are a product of the cave - flower bombs or bomb flowers. The moment Link plucks one of the flower bombs and asks if they are flowers, the flower bomb selfdestructs, covering him in soot and the goron reveals that if they are picked up they explode. Link comments he could have told him sooner. Suddenly, footsteps are heard, and the goron says that he is out of there, with Link urging him caution, and then, the trio are soon preyed upon by King Dodongo, the infernal dinosaur himself, with Link commenting the predator's immense size. The giant dinosaur looses streams of fire everywhere, with the goron directing Link to flee, and Link states he cannot do anything something as big as King Dodongo with either the fairy slingshog or the Kokiri sword. Initially stating the dinosaur to be slow, he is proven wrong when the beast curls into a ball and charges toward him and Epona. The filly crouches down, her front hooves over her muzzle and shivering in fear, and Link tells her in shock this is no time to lie down, and he himself ducks out of the way when the gigantic carnosaur rolls right past them and then crashes into the wall. Link notices that while King Dodongo is big he is not quite bright. When the giant dinosaur regains his bearings, Link states to him to watch this, so he dashes over, grabs a flower bomb, jumps from wall to wall, and after taunting the huge carnivore if he would like a mouthful of bombs, he throws the bomb into the beast's gullet, blowing him to pieces and killing him, thus saving the Gorons and restoring their food supply. Darunia reveals that Ganondorf had come to Goron City to offer protection in exchange for the Goron's Ruby, and when the gorons did not comply, the dark warlord made the dodongo dinosaurs extremely aggressive. Telling Link that he is a true man among mortal men, the goron chieftain rewards him the Goron's Ruby as a token of friendship and gratitude, titling the boy 'Brother of the Gorons' and declaring the time to celebrate this evening and stating he will dance, with one of the Gorons telling Link that while Darunia may not look it he likes to dance. The gorons celebrate, with Darunia showing some impressive dance moves as Link plays the fairy ocarina, later wondering where Epona had gone off to. Later that night, Epona then heads home to Lon Lon Ranch.

• Chapter 5: Inside Jabu-Jabu's Belly

As Link is sleeping under a tree in the plains, he suddenly has the same dream: a burning palace, but it is a different one from Hyrule Castle, a baby and his mother fleeing the blaze, and the Great Deku Tree; until Link wakes up screaming for the Great Tree. With the Kokiri's Emerald and the Goron's Ruby in hand, Link knows there is one spiritual stone left, but he does not know where the Zora's Sapphire is hidden, and Navi states betting the Great Tree might have known where it is. As soon as the duo make off to find the gem, Link picks up the sound of someone singing. Navi asks what the matter is, with Link replying that he hears singing it is coming from Lon Lon Ranch, so when he heads there, Navi mistakes it for a deserted farm, thinking there might be ghosts. Then, Epona appears onto the scene at tackles Link to the ground, with Navi mistaking the foal for a ghost and telling Link to flee; However, the filly is happily sampling his scent. Link recognizes Epona as the filly from earlier, knowing it is a horse ranch, and he and Navi are spotted by the famer girl sitting on a fence. She then jumps off and states it has been a while since they have had visitors, welcoming Link and Navi to Lon Lon Ranch and asking where he came from before noticing Navi and stating he is from Kokiri Forest, and taking him into the barn, though Link states he and Navi did not come for sightseeing. The girl states everyone save her father, Talon, is a night owl. Navi recognizes Talon as the person who gave Link a bottle of milk during his eariler ride to the castle city. The girl tries to wake Talon up, but he does not stay awake for long. A grouchy farmhand scolds the girl for waking Talon in time for his nape, grumbling that nothing would be done around the farm if not for him. The girl states to the farmhand, Ingo, that he does keep the ranch running, though he claims a suggestion to rename it Ingo Ranch. Link states to the farm girl that he is in a hurry and that he is on a quest to find the Zora's Sapphire. The farm girl gives Link a bottle of milk, with Link saying his gratitude in confusion. The farm girl introduces herself as Malon, stating Epona has a fondness for music and singing, to which Navi realizes that must be why the filly came when Link played the ocarina, with Link learning Epona's Song from Malon in the process. Malon sits on a portion of the fence that ranch life is nothing but hard and lonely work and that she is quite tired. Link asks where Malon's mother is, and she reveals having lost her when she was young, finishing that singing at night makes it all better, which Link agrees, stating he is the same with the fairy ocarina. Malon states on certain occasions she has a dream that a prince from beyond the moon would swoop in and take her away, asking if Link has a dream. To avoid suspision, Link states that he dreams on seeing the world, and he is then visited by the large eagle-owl who had been watching over him. The eagle-owl states that Link has grown quite strong, introducing himself to be named Kaepora Gaebora when asked who he is, and reveals that he had known about Link since he was a baby and that the Great Deku Tree was his old friend, catching Link by surprise. Kaepora Gaebora reveals that the Zora's Sapphire is in Zora's Domain, which shocks Link. Kaepora Gaebora states that Link should see that look on his face, offering him to take him to the domain if he needs more information. Link accepts, requesting the eagle-owl to take him with him, and Kaepora Gaebora flies off to the east. Malon asks if Link is leaving already, with Link promising Malon he will come back. Malon calls out to he will. During the flight, Kaepora Gaebora takes a small chane to tease Link on talking with Saria, Zelda, and Malon, changing the subject when Link states everyone looks like ants from a high altitude, asking if all mortals are small. Kaepora Gaebora states that Link is small but he has the power to change the world, stating that while Link may think he left the forest because he wanted to, but in truth it was his destined fate, which shocks Link. After letting him drop down to the eastern river, the great eagle-owl states that Link will know the entire truth soon. The next morning, Link groggily asks where he is, and yells out in surprise when he notices King Zora, the Zora chieftain, looming over him. A Zora attendant scolds him for his rudeness, stating that Link is standing before King Zora, the Zora chieftain. King Zora agrees, and asks Link who he is. Link wonders if this is Zora's Domain, introduces himself, and then tells the Zora chieftain that Zelda has told him the tale passed down to the royal family, requesting to find the Zora's Sapphire. King Zora states they cannot deal with messengers of the Hyrulean royal family for now, reveals that his daughter, Princess Ruto, has disappeared and was swallowed by Jabu-Jabu, the Zora guardian dwelling in Zora's Fountain. One of the Zora cititens reveals that Jabu-Jabu has been acting strangely when Ganondorf arrived. Hearing this, Link asks King Zora where Ruto is, and the Zora chieftain replies she is still in Jabu-Jabu' stomach, though the next day she is to be married a most handsome Zora man. Link selflessly volunteers to get inside Jabu-Jabu's stomach and rescue Ruto, requesting a promise to give the Zora's Sapphire to him when he is done. King Zora accepts the deal, sating it is a royal decree. Before Link can make for the Fountain, King Zora gives him a boomerang, sating it is a weapon passed down from the Do Bon clan from generations, as boomerangs always return to the user once thrown. Link tries to get inside as if Jabu-Jabu were a door, but Navi reminds him that an offering is to be made. When Link takes a fish as an offering, he is devoured in turn. He finds a rather grouchy Ruto in peril from a vicious parasitic anemone named Barinade and shoves her to safety, only for her resist his attempts to rescue her, calling him a peasant and resisting help, and even trying to get him to leave, later telling Link to get the Zora's Sapphire, claiming to have dropped it when Jabu-Jabu swallowed her. Just as Link is about charge, Ruto stops him in place by grabbing the strap of the scabbard, scolding him for planning on leaving her behind, and he has no choice but to carry her on his back when he complains how he can get the Zora's Sapphire. Barinade, however, wraps its tendril around Ruto, and Link tries the Boomerang out, slicing the tendril, saving Ruto, and liberating the gem, and then he leaps up and removes the parasite in one slash. In the aftermath, Ruto scolds Link for tossing her aside, with Link apologizing and hoping to hand the gem over. Ruto states the experience was a bit scary, and reveals she had intended to hide. Link asks why, and Ruto reveals her father planned an arranged marriage for her and never asked what she though, stating he prattles on who he calls 'our cute princess', and that she has her own feelings and is not a doll. Link reveals that the Great Deku Tree who was like a father to him was murdered and that he will never see him again, and Ruto has a father who is worried sick about her, offering to take her home. Ruto reluctantly complies, stating she should first give Link something special, and that this is the Spriritual stone of Water, the Zora's Sapphire, the gem she was supposed to give to her fiancée sort of like an engagement ring, finishing that she will give the gem to Link instead, rewarding the Zora's Sapphire to Link. Link proudly declares he has all three spiritual stones and leaves, with Ruto telling him to come back as he gives his gratitude, and Link asks what an engagement ring is after leaving Jabu-Jabu's stomach. Ruto reveals she had given the Zora's Sapphire away already, a deed that leaves King Zora and one of his attendants shocked and confused. Later that night, Link rushes along in the plains, stating he and Navi need to hurry back to Zelda in the palace, calling to the Great Deku Tree he has done it. Suddenly, Link stops in his tracks and is horrified to notice that the entire palace is set ablaze; his dream, the very dream he told Saria about before his journey, has come full circle.

• Chapter 6: The Hero of Time is Born

Hordes of skeletal warriors called Stalfos swarm about, and thousands of terrified citizens are fleeing for their lives from the city, some stating that Ganondorf has staged a rebellion, with others saying it is a coup d'état as Link tries to make his way to the palace, though some of the guards perish in the scorching flames. When he reaches the palace, Link calls to Zelda, scaling a wall to try and spot her, eventually catching a glimpse of three silhouettes on a palace balcony. On the palace balcony, Impa tries as best she can to keep Zelda safe, calling Ganondorf a 'villain' in the midst of it and her dagger poised. The dark overlord reveals he put the king to a permanent sleep, to Zelda's horror, as Link tries to make his way to Zelda and Impa. The dark tyrant then explains that when he gets his hands the Triforce, he will rule Hyrule, if not the entire planet. As the Aspect of Wisdom, Zelda states that such a plot will not occur, for she knows the Hero of Time will appear in Hyrule, and he will defeat the tyrannical warlord in battle. Ganondorf sees that this is her last hope and tries to crush her, only to punch the concrete to pieces when Impa leaps out of the way, with the dark demonlord ordering his forces to sieze the Ocarina of time and stating to himself that Zelda still sticks to the 'Hero of Time' superstition. Impa hacks her way through hordes of Stalfos in her effort to escape while taking a scared Zelda to safety. Link calls to Zelda, and she calls out to him in turn. When Link tries to reach them, he is stopped briefly by Stallord, the Stalfos commander. Link tries to get Stallord to move aside, but the Stalfos commander challenges him to try and bypass him, calling him 'pipsqueak' in the process. Link tries to reduce Stallord to a pile of bones by hacking his legs, but he reforms, stating he did not feel a thing, and knocks Link off his feet in a swing of his sword. The Deku Shield is reduced to cinders, to Link's horror. Impa and Zelda flee on horseback, and Link tries to catch up to them, calling out to Zelda in the midst of it. Zelda calls out to Link and tries to have Impa stop the horse. Fearing for Zelda's life, Impa states she cannot, for they will both be slaughtered, and Zelda tosses the Ocarina of Time overhead. After running toward the city gates and picking the Ocarina of Time from the drawbridge, Link takes a moment to catch his breath, and turns in horror when Ganondorf appears behind him, mounted on a large black horse garbbed in barding, with the dark tyrant demanding that Link hand the Ocarina of Time over to him at once as a bolt of lightning flashes overhead with claps of thunder following suit. Link draws his sword out of its scabbard in angered defiance and leaps up to try and attack Ganondorf. But the dark lord swats him away with a scimitar, knocking him onto the ground, with Ganondorf stating Link has the guts to challenge him, asking if Link is the same boy he saw in the palace, or if he is a kokiri, asking what he is. Link claims to be a kokiri, stating the Great Deku Tree had raised him, shouting his name and trying to attack the tyrannical demonlord from above. The dark demonlord immolates Link with a lightning orb, knocking him on the ground again, and the Fairy Ocarina bounces way. Believing it to be the Ocarina of Time, Ganondorf picks the fairy ocarina from the grass, to Link's shock, with the dark tyrant smirking and riding off in pursuit of Zelda as rain begins to fall. Link calls out to the Great Deku Tree, stating that it is no use, that as small as he is he is of no match for the dark devil at all, asking what he should do and even if he had all three spiritual stones, close to giving in to anguish. Remembering that Zelda said the entry to the Sacred Realm being in the Temple of Time and that the ocarina of time is the key to opening the time door, Link states that Zelda left him the ocarina, stating to Navi that they need to get to the cathedral. So he heads to the Temple of Time, with voices from an the ancients stating that he who gathers the spiritual stones must stand at the door and play a time song. Link states it is the song Zelda taught him and plays the melody into the ocarina; the Triforce symbol above the doorway gleams brightly, and with all three spiritual stones gathered above the altar, the time door opens. Curious, Link walks inside a secret chamber where Navi flies up to the most legendary and sacred gladius, the Master Sword, stating it to be the legendary blade. Link walks up the Master Sword, asking himself that if he has the Master Sword he might be able to defeat the dreadful dark lord, and with no effort, he pulls the Master Sword from its pedestal in the chamber, enveloping him in a tall pillar of light. Link wonders what is going on and what is happening to him, with Ganondorf laughing malevolently. The sacred sages tell Link to awaken. Seven years or three quaters of a decade afterward, Link awakens in a large church like chamber, now a fully grown seventeen-year old young man; as soon as he asks what happened, Navi states he is now fully grown and is an adult. Rauru, the Sage of Light and the true guise of Kaepora Gaebora, tells Link to settle and look around, introducing himself and he is one of the Sages, the ancients themselves, who built the Temple of Time and forged the entrance to the Sacred Realm, finishing that while his body is gone but in the Sages Chamber he can speak with Link. Link asks what in the world happened to him, staing he pulled the Master sword from it's pedestal and nothing happened. Rauru reveals that the Master Sword is so sacred that no devilish evil can touch it and that only mortal heroes worthy enough to carry the title of 'Hero of Time' can wield it, stating that Link was too young for the title and he was put in a magical slumber for seven years. Link repeats the last part, and Rauru states that in those seven years Ganondorf, now the Evil King, was able to go through the time door, breach the Sacred Realm, and claim one of the Triforce's aspects, the Triforce of Power, for himself, that his dark magic threatens Hyrule, and then that hope remains, giving Link a new task: lift the curses over five temples and awaken the five sages, stating that if the sages and the Hero of Time combine their strengths into one, they can overcome the dark overlord's magic. Link realizes he is the Hero of Time, and Navi states that if the Great Deku Tree would see him now, he would be amazed. Rauru states that the Great Deku Tree knew his destiny, revealing that Link is not a real Kokiri; the mortal blood of a hylian human flows through Link's veins as with Zelda herself, and long before the hylian clans of Hyrule were united, amid the flames of war, Link was born to a great house of the great Hyrulean king, reavealing that Link's father had died in battle, and his mother, despite being mortally injured, took him and fled the burning palace to Kokiri forest before dying from her wounds, stating the Great Deku Tree saw the baby, and sensing the destiny to Hyrule's future he took the child in, knowing someday Link would leave the forest. Link comes to the realization he is a hylian human, and Rauru concludes that Link will face may difficult trials from that day foward, for it is his fated destiny and reminds him to not fear. Link declares he will not be afraid and states his intentions to fight, that he will battle Ganondorf fairly and protect Zelda before leaving the cathedral.

Hero of Time[]

• Chapter 1: Sword of Legend: The Master Sword

Hordes of Stalfos march in the ruins of the city, with what remains of the Hyrule army trying as best they can to ward them off. One of the warriors suffers a fatal wound from Stallord, who taunts him by stating he will find plenty of undead in the depths of the underworld. Link arrives in the nick of time. Stallord realizes there were some survivors from the palace, and Link exclaims it is they who will go into the depths of the underworld, and he reduces the Stalfos legionnaires to a pile of bones before meeting Stallord again. Initially seeing the Master Sword and that Link is the Hero of Time, Link asks if it is him again, and Stallord realizes Link is the same child who crossed him seven years prior, and Link explains he could not do a thing back then, and now he is not a hopeless child any longer. Stallord taunts him by stating it is big talk, calling him 'little man' before charging. Navi urges Link to be careful, and after a brief duel, Link takes the Stalfos commander out of the bout in one swing, reducing him to a ghastly disembodied skull. The warrior, despite his fatal wound, recognizes Link as the boy who caused a ruckus around palace, complimenting he had become quite a fighter. When Link questions what happened to Hyrule, the warrior states Ganondorf had siezed the top aspect of the Triforce, the Triforce of Power, and become the sorcerer king, changing Hyrule's beautiful landscapes into fields full of predatory monsters, and now he is after the Ocarina of Time that Zelda had. When Link asks where Zelda is, the warrior states he does not know and that no one else knows since fleeing with Impa, and that Ganondorf has taken the palace. Link decides that is where he is heading, and the warrior's last words are for Link to take caution, as the city are full of Ganondorf's armies. Link states the city was once lively, and Navi feels a painful source, all this evil energy, adding it will take time to get used to it. Requesting that Navi rest in his hat, Link heads to where Hyrule Castle would usually be, recounting his life in the forests of eastern Hyrule, how Kokiri forest was peaceful until Gohma appeared, aquiring the Kokiri's Emerald afterward, on being instructed to leave the forest by the Great Deku Tree, and then his fateful encounter with Zelda, making a deal with her, then of his finding the Goron's Ruby and the Zora's Sapphire, and when he returned to the palace, Zelda had fled and left the Ocarina of Time behind, leading him to the legendary Master Sword and pulling it from it's pedestal, having woken up from a seven year hibernation as a full grown man, then recounting his current task from Rauru of awakening the other five sages, as it is the only way to liberate Hyrule from the dark devil. Link thinks to himself that everything, even the road to the palace, has changed, and he arrives at the palace's usual spot, he is horrified to see a gigantic citadel in its stead, the evil aura exuding from it frightening Navi. A Poe appears, stating that the palace had dissapeared long ago, and it its place is Ganondorf's citadel; the stronghold of the dark master. Link tells the Poe to get lost and cuts her down, stating for Ganondorf to look out, and then collapses from exhaustion. Navi explains he's used a bit much of the sword's power, and that he needs to use it more wisely, to which Link agrees, stating that while the Master Sword is an awesome weapon, he will need a strong arm to wield it, with Navi suggesting he needs training. Remembering to protect the Triforce as per his mission from Zelda, Link puts the Master Sword in its scabbard and then he heads off into the plains before stopping in his tracks. Navi asks Link what the matter is, stating he has suddenly stopped, and Link states that he was merely thinking that the scents on Hyrule Field and the sunlight are completely different than they were prior, adding that all this happened to Hyrule while he was gone and that he is shocked, that he feels he might be the last mortal on the planet, and worries he might ever see Zelda again. Navi reassures that he will see her, stating she's somewhere safe and waiting for him for a long time. At Navi's suggestion, Link starts playing a song that is heard by a mysterious man who admits having not heard an all too familiar ballad in a long while, stating that this hymn of old was passed down generations of the Hyrulean royal family, finishing that it is the sound of the ocarina, and the sound of time it self. In his citadel, Ganondorf crushes the Fairy Ocarina, stating it is not the Ocarina of Time and while looks like it it is different, and accuses Link of tricking him and asks Stallord of he is the Hero of Time. Stallord replies he is, as Link has the Master Sword. One of the Gerudo asks if Link asks the Ocarina of Time, with one of a pair of short witches stating Stallord should have slain Link before. Ganondorf states that before Link can fully utilize the Master Sword, they must sieze the Ocarina of Time.

• Chapter 2: The Sage of the Forest: Saria

With a bit of dark magic, Ganondorf summons his ghostly phantom, Phantom Ganon, stating to the ghostly specture that the Hero of Time is heading to the Forest Temple, and instructs him to head there first before Link can awaken the forest sage, and kill him. Out in the plains, Navi is coaching Link's vigorous training, encouraging him to keep it up and swing faster, as Link is practicing on swinging the Master Sword, only to accidentally slam it onto a rock. The impact leaves Link vibrating like a bourdon bell, and Navi scolds him for too many openings, to which Link tells her to be quiet as he is trying to concentrate, though she states she is trying to help, stating if he does not learn how to use the Master Sword correctly he will not be able to hold his own against Ganondorf's armies. Link confidently states he has a killer move, the Spin Attack, mockingly stating how about it for massive destruction. Confused, Navi states if the insects wish to know Link plans on mowing more of the grass before they leave. Heading through the jungle, Link hacks at the foliage, with Navi stating it is humid due to the heat. Link wonders if Ganondorf's corruptive power has extended to the jungle, stating to himself he has to infiltate five temples and awaken the sages inside each one, finishing if he combines his strengths with theirs, he will halt Ganondorf's dark magic. Soon, Link revisits the Kokiri Forest, stating they are getting close. Navi suggests dropping in before going further to the temple. Link says it must bring back memories and calls out, but there is no answer, with Link stating it is strangely quiet. Link is soon mobbed by a pair of Deku Babbas, and after cutting them down, he hears someone shouting yikes and notcies a child being attacked by a third deku baba. He brings the third deku baba down, and when he asks the child if he is alright, he realizes that the very child he saved is actually Mido, whom Link remembers that all the two boys would do was get into rumpuses and then be chastised by the Great Deku Tree, finishing that his scowling face never did change and why he still resembles a child. Mido, who does not recognize him due to his adult age, reveals that predators and monsters are plaguing the forest due to the fact that the young Link had left, stating he broke the rules and left the forest. Link says that it is due to Ganondorf's tyranny, Mido blames young Link for the villagers being unable to play and for Saria's absence, shouting it is his fault. When Link inquires what has happened tp Saria, Mido says what would it matter to Link and storms away. Link follows suit, with Navi stating that Kokiris are a race that hardly grow, and they follow him to a large northern meadow, where the Forest Temple stands. Mido makes to fight a pair of wolves, hoping to get them out of the forest with a deku stick. When Link drives the wolves away, Mido asks why did he do it and what gives, and when Link plays Saria's Song on the Ocarina of Time, Mido instantly recognizes the tune, stating that Saria always played that melody, and soon asks if Link knows Saria. The two head into the dilapidated manor to find her, with Mido stressing that there is no one to protect the forest due to the Great Deku Tree's passing, that Saria went inside the temple to find a solution to save the forest but never returned, and that it is up to him now to save her, later venting his rage that young Link was always flirting with her and why he never returned as promised, finishing that he had been waiting the whole time. Just as Link reveals that the aforementioned person might return as well as Saria, he is ambushed from a painting by Phanton Ganon. Pushing Mido to safety and telling him to stay back, Link tries to fight, but he slams the Master Sword against the painting. Link realizes that the ghoulish ghost is in the painting, and when the phantom reapears, Link is then electrocuted from a lightning attack. He tries to slice the ghostly ghoul with the Master Sword, but it does not work, with Link calling to the ghostly phantom to come back when he clangs the point of the Master Sword on a painting. As soon as Phantom Ganon looses a lightning attack, Link steps backward, wondering what he should do. Mido tries to sidestep away, but he prods into shortbow from a weapon rack. Mido grabs the shortbow from the weapon rack, asking of it, and Navi reveals it is a fairy bow, stating it will give Link a fighting chance. Mido calls out to Link and tosses the bow toward him. With the shortbow in hand, Link now has a chance to fight back, and when Navi gives the command to open fire now, Link looses an arrow to stop Phantom Ganon in one shot to the forehead, reducing the ghoulish ghost to a charred painting, though Mido is knocked out cold. Saria appears from the painting and gives Link her gratitude, stating that Kokiri Forest will now return to normal. Link is shocked when he calls to Saria, and she reveals that the seal is broken and she can reawaken as the Sage of Forest. When Link asks she is the Sage of Forest, Saria confirms, stating that while she cannot be in the mortal plane any longer, she can still help him, and Hyrule as a whole, from this point onward, finishing that even though she and Link are apart, they will always be friends, to which Link agrees with. Saria goes back into the painting as Mido regains conciousness and pulls himself in a seated posture, wondering where she is. With the Kokiris liberated, Mido vows to work with Saria to protect the forest, with the whole tribe expressing gratitude to Link. Mido admits that while Link was fighting, he reminded him of young Link. Navi asks if Link is going to tell him, to which Link replies not to, because whenever he returns, they will surely be friends.

• Chapter 3: An Old and Beloved Friend

On the summit of Death Mountain, Link, garbbed in the Goron Tunic, is face to face with a large red dragon. A young goron calls for Link to get him, and Navi calls for Link to shoot the arrow. Link pulls the string of his shortbow, prepared to fire. But he hesitates, to which Navi calls what he is doing and the young goron calling for him to hurry and shoot. Link is still hesitant to fire the arrow away, and he is blown off a cliff and burned; Navi calls out to Link, and the young goron exclaims how horrible this is, and then the mysterious man appears, as a voice a red dragon whelpling calls to Link three times. Link wakes up to the sound of a harp being played by the mysterious man. When Link asks who he is, the man introduces himself as Sheik, the last of the Sheikah tribe. Navi rushes in, pleased to see Link is alright, but soon asking if he is fine when he clutches his right arm in pain. Sheik states Link would have not have made had he not been wearing the Goron Tunic. Link asks if Sheik tended to his wounds and burns, and Sheik reveals that it would not be a good thing if Link, the Hero of Time, perished. Link states there would be no one left to oppose Ganondorf, to which Sheik agrees, stating that Link has another mission; to defeat the evil dragon called Volvagia. Shocked, Link denies that the dragon is not evil, and the young goron pleads for Link to help Darunia, stating that if he does not hurry Volvagia will eat him. Sheik reveals that Ganondorf is making an example of the goron chieftain to the other races of Hyrule, stating if the disobey his orders, they will be food for Volvagia along with the chieftain. The young goron weeps, stating to Link that he has always been the 'Brother of the Gorons', and if he really is a brother, he has to help him. Link sadly states he cannot defeat the dragon, but Sheik states the only to purify the curse on Volvagia is to slay him. Visibly upset, Link states that is easy for Sheik to say, stating there has to be some way for the red dragon to remember him. Sheik escorts him to a badly damaged Goron City, where some of the gorons are trying to evacuate or are slaughtered. Link is horrified, and Sheik comments that if Volvagia is allowed to continue his wrath, Death Mountain will erupt, and not just the volcano, the nearby Kakariko Village and the plains; everything will be destroyed by the lava. Link recalls finding Volvagia as a whelpling who was in a cage and on sale and worth seventy rupees nearly a decade earlier after leaving the forest, and after purchasing the whelpling and heading into the plains in hopes of letting the whelpling go free from the cage, he initially turned aggressive toward Link, clamping his toothless jaws on Link's left hand and making him angry when he stated he had spent all his money to helo you, and then the whelpling immolated Link's face with a gout of fire, and he had left with a huff. The whelpling began following Link; Navi stated to Link the whelpling was still following him, which made Link turn his head away in a huff. When Link to set up a brief camp for lunch, Navi stated the whelpling was still there. When Link tried to offer the whelpling a piece of bass, the whelpling tried to steal whole thing, making Link furious, but when whelping suddenly reduced a Stalchild to cinders with a gout of fire, Link noticed the monster's burning remains and knew the whelpling was helping him and that the whelpling was lonely all that time, and the whelpling started to speak Link's name, catching Link and Navi by surprise, with the latter stating that dragons can repeat words and that was the first time she had seen it. Link stated to the whelpling that they would be friends from that point onward, with the whelpling repeating Link's name. Back in the present, Volvagia continues his destructive rampage, with more gorons being slaughtered, and Navi states to Link that the volcano is about to erupt. When Volvagia takes notice of Link and charges, Link tries to get the dragon to remember him, but cannot do so as the red dragon closes in. With only one difficult choice, he fires an arrow into the dragons right eye, leaps upward, and decapitates the red dragon in one swing, stopping the volcano's eruption and saving the gorons once again, with the severed dragon's head landing on the ground. With tears in his left eye, the newly purified Volvagia repeats Link's name one last time before fading to cinders, leaving Link in tears. In Ganondorf's citadel, the dark dictator asks Sheik that Volvagia had failed. Sheik confirms this, stating that killing the red dragon has mentally hurt the Hero of Time deeply, stating the time to confront Link is now. The dark overlord instructs him to keep watching the Hero of Time, and questions that Sheik has not discovered where Zelda is hiding. Sheik states that they have scoured the lands and found no trace of the princess, and Ganondorf states capturing her is Sheik's utmost priority and that they cannot allow Link and Zelda find one another, to which Sheik complies unquestioningly. Back at the volcano, Darunia is selected as the sage of fire. The young goron learns this fact first hand, and a second goron compliments Link by stating he is cool. Although Darunia thanks Link for saving the gorons again, he learns this aid has caused Link a great deal of mental agony, instructing him to stay in the volcano and settle down, for if he lets his emotions get the best of him he will not defeat Ganondorf. Link reluctantly agrees, stating he will not forgive Ganondorf.

• Chapter 4: Link vs. Link

While traveling the plains, a starving Link asks Navi if she cannot see anything, to which she replies not a thing and scolds him for being in a hurry to stop the dark devil. Link admits his mistake on forgetting to get food and water and comments he did not see that Hyrule Field would be completely desolate. Navi notices Kakariko Village ahead, and Link praises the light of the gods, jogging ahead and stating they can get some food and water there. But he is set upon from above when a dagger flies right past him, nearly slicing his left ear clean off. A mysterious woman appears with a mighty leap and launches a vicious attack, and Link wonders if she is one of Ganondorf's troopers before losing balance and falling on the ground. The woman makes to kill Link, but stops her shortsword just inches from his jugular when she notices the Triforce symbol on the Master Sword near the hilt, recognizing the legendary blade right away. The woman asks Link if he has forgotten her after seven years. Link recognizes the woman as Impa, and she compliments on obtaining the Master Sword. He gets a much needed meal in the inn, and the innkeeper states there is more to eat where that came from while complimenting his fight against Volvagia in the volcano's monastery, which leaves him distraught. Impa states she would wish that Link had matured, and scolds Link for still being so careless, and while she understands that Link is mentally hurting from a difficult choice, going hungry and thirsty while on the move is something fools would do, stating he cannot afford to be a fool and he is not yet worthy of weapons like the Master Sword. Link apologizes, and innkeeper begs for Impa to go easy on him. Link states that he has to defeat Ganondorf but cannot know if he can, stating the longer he delays the greater the warlord can hurt the people he loves. Impa decides they will rebuild Link's strength and spirit before confining him to the village and leaving the inn. Some of the townsfolk try to take a sorrel mare, a fully grown Epona, out of the village toward Ganondorf's citadel. A little boy named Alf begs for the townsfolk not to take Epona away, with his mother stating there is no other choice. Before she can explain the consequences of disobeying Ganondorf's orders, Alf scurries away, unable to stand the thought of Epona being Ganondorf's horse. Link reclaims Epona by playing her song using the Ocarrina of Time, reuniting with her in the process, stating that Link remembers the ocarina and that she had come from Lon Lon to Kakariko after nearly a decade. Alf and his mother are taken by surprise by the reclaimation, with the mother stating Epona usually take to strangers this way. Alf recognizes Link as the Hero of Time, asking if he is a hero and pleading him to help Epona and to not let her be Ganondorf's steed. Link asks Impa for help, imploring her to teaching him to be stronger. Impa accepts, and Link undergoes serious training, though Impa is more athletic than she looks when he comments about her agility and tries the Spin Attack; Impa jumps out of the way and comments if Link cannot strike his enemy it matters little what sword he uses before smacking him on the middle back and jumping onto a tall tower, which catches Link off guard when she calls for him to master that trick. After vigorous training and catching his breath, Link washes his face at a nearby water well and compliments that this is a great village. Alf states that Link should live in Kakariko so he can visit the boy's sister. Link states that he has nothing but how horribly Hryule has changed until today, stating that in this settlement he has found a measure of peace. Impa reveals that settlement is named Kakariko and it is her hometown, and that there have been more monster sightings, some of them disguising themselves as human beings to attack settlements like Kakariko from within, and she had been on guard duty, though Alf is confident with Link around things will be fine. Link asks Impa where Zelda is. Before she can reveal Zelda's wherabouts, Alf is attacked by a shadowy tendril. Alf cries for help. Luckily, Link cuts the tendril, saving Alf in the process and blocking furhter attacks before the living shadow manifests into a dark lookalike of Link, who reveals he knew Link would come and that he had been waiting for him. Link realizes he looks like him. Alf is petrified, and Impa tells Link to be cautious, sating the lookalike is one such monster she spoke about. The shadow copy taunts him by statting how fitting is for him to be brought low by his own shadow, and a savage duel begins, with the shadow lookalike mimicking every move Link makes, to which Link tells it to stop copying him when he learns he is mimicking him. Navi tells Link to hang in there, and Impa instructs Link to be calm, stating that the shadow is merely a copy and he's using every move he has ever done before. Link gets an idea; he parries the shadow's sword thrusts, leaps backward to dodge a Spin Attack, and cleaves the shadow in two. But the shadow copy is back for more, this time on a shadowy steed. When Link tries to avoid getting trampled, Epona rushes in and headbutts the shadow horse on the shoulder, knocking it back and itching to be ridden into battle. Link accepts, and then the battle is even. Link makes it clear to the shadow copy that while he can take any form he wants he is not getting anywhere in Kakariko, and then slices the shadow copy's hand off before charging forward atop Epona and finishing him off with one final thrust, reducing the shadow to mere nothingness. Impa compliments on Links success over defeating his own shadow. After getting Link's ears pierced, Impa states it is a coming of age ritual, and then reveals that while Zelda is safe, but cannot tell where she is until the time is right for it. Alf's mother reminds Link that if he goes through the village to the southeast there is a shortcut into Zora's domain while giving him supplies. Impa states that while she wishes she can go with Link, she is needed in Kakariko, and that Link has to protect Zelda in her stead. Link states she can count on him and rides off onward.

Hero of Time[]

• Chapter 5: Shadow Guide: Sheik

In the throne room of his citadel, Ganondorf scolds Ingo for letting Link take Epona, especially as he is letting him take charge of Lon Lon Ranch, accusing him of potential betrayal. Ingo apologizes to the tyrannical overlord, but before he can explain that the townsfolk of Kakariko had insisted, a massive knight appears behind him. Ingo calls for the tyrannical warlord to wait, crying for help in the midst. Koume and Kotake soon cackle; Koume states Ingo is easy to possess, and Kotake states for the dark warlord to leave it to them. Ganondorf states to himself of the Twinrova speciality, brainwashing, calling it 'fascinating'. As Ingo tries to escape, the twin witches brainwash Ingo with their magic, with Koume telling Ingo he will turn against the Hero of Time. Fully corrupted, Ingo repeats the word 'betray' three times, and Sheik appears onto the scene. Koume notices that it is Sheik who has arrived, and Kotake requests for him to play a heartbreaking tune. Sheik instead reveals that thanks to Impa, now the Sage of Shadow, Link has grown strong and Ingo might now defeat him. Out of curiosity, Ganondorf asks why Sheik serves him, stating that the Sheikah tribe the royal family of Hyrule for many centuries, concluding if it is possible that Sheik seeks vengeance. Sheik states that the tribe was just a shadow, stating they needed someone to take charge and provide substance, that he had no master and then the dark warlock came to him, finishing it was his main reason, and then stating he will lure the Hero of Time to Lon Lon before vanishing, leaving the dark overlord to think about this. Out in the plains, Link is riding on Epona, stating he cannot wait to find Zelda, when a frightened Talon appears, imploring him to help Malon. Link asks what happened, and Talon states that Ganondorf became angry when the former did not give Epona over and that the dark demonlord took his daughter. Link rides off for the ranch. Due to the Twinrova's corruption, Ingo has suddenly began mistreating the horses and the cattle using his scourge, shouting that this is what happens to those who do not obey him. When Malon pleads for him to stop, Ingo reveals she is the mistress of the ranch no longer, or anything else no longer, demanding that she do as he wishes and be still. When Malon asks why Ingo tied her up, Ingo states she is bait to lure him out. Confused, Malon wonders him who. When Link arrives in the ranch, he states everything in the ranch looks normal on the outside, and is quick to notice Malon upon looking in the window; Navi warns Link that whoever did this is still out there, requesting that he go quietly. Malong thinks to herself that life stinks, that her mother died when she was a child and she grew up sweating and working to help Talon run the ranch, and now she has been captured, and she hopes that someday a prince on a white horse will appear and rescue pitiful her. Link drops in from the roof window into a pile of hay. Navi states it is not how Impa does this, and Link gets up from the hay, his clothes covered in hay strands, and he asks Malon if he is alright. Confused, Malon asks who Link is, and when Link reintroduces himself, Malon initially states she does not know any links, to his embarrassment. Link plays a note in the Ocarina of Time, stating that she taught him Epona's Song seven years ago. Malon recognizes Link at last, stating he is the fairy boy from the forest, asking what he is doing in the Ranch. Link states he has come to save her, telling her to go with him. Malon states that while she appreciates the thought, she is waiting to be rescued by a prince and not a fairy boy. Link takes Malon by her left wrist and tells her to hurry up, but before he can state they have got to go, they are ambushed by a contigent of the Gerudo under Ingo's command. When Malon asks who these women are, Link states they are the Gerudo, Ganondorf's tribe. Ingo states to Link that he has fallen into his trap, planning on showing Link what it means to cross Ganondorf. Link instantly recognizes Ingo right away, though Navi notices he has changed. A vicious scuffle starts when Ingo orders the Gerudo to kill Link, though he easily incapacitates them by crushing their cutlasses with a Spin Attack. Malon thinks to herself that Link has grown up. Link takes a hookshot from his bag and looses it to a support beam from the roof, and draws himself and Malon upwards. Ingo tells the Gerudo grunts not to let Link and Malon get away and to go after them, with Malon wondering if Link could be her prince. On the barn's roof, as Malon states to herself maybe Link is her prince, Navi states hookshot is pretty handy, with Link stating what it is and that he got it at Kakariko Village, turning his attention to the matter at hand and asking Malon when Ingo be in charge of the Gerudo contigent. Malon exclaims she does not know, stating it is like he is suddently a different person, that he drove Talon away and took over the ranch, and that Talon is missing, quietly stating he did not do much work. Link wonders if that was not Talon he met earlier, and Malon states that the old Ingo complained a lot but worked hard, stating that he was kind to the horses, but somehow started treating them horribly. Sheik appears onto the scene and reveals that Ingo was corrupted by Twinrova. Link wonders what Sheik is doing at the Ranch, and when Navi asks who Twinrova are, Sheik explains that they are the very witches who raised Ganondorf, and their main hobby is brainwashing experiments, finishing that it is a rotten hobby to him. Link wonders how they can un-brainwash him, and how Sheik knows this, why he is telling him this and who he is. Sheik states that he is a wandering minstrel, stating on his journeys he hears things, striking a chord on his harp. Malon states that chord is nostalgic, and that is a sad tune. Sheik then instructs Link to head to the Haunted Wasteland, stating there is a rumor that Princess Zelda has been seen there. When Link wonders this, Sheik reveals that the key to Ingo's corruption is a jewel in his right ear before leaving. Link calls out for Sheik to wait, but he is ambushed from below by the Gerudo, and he and Malon jump off the barn, with Malon questions Link as to why he did not call Zelda 'princess' and how close they are, thinking to herself that he does not have to answer, as she can see it in Link's eyes, knowing her romance is hopeless for the time being, and she joins the battle by stating this is not the time for this kind of talk and smacking a gerudo brigand on the forhead with a hay fork. Link compliments this, and Malon states one would learn a lot growing up on a ranch, but her hay fork is broken into two when Ingo appears, his arbalest at the ready, telling them to freeze and that he wants to remember them this way. Noticing the gem in Ingo's right ear, Link disarms him using his hookshot and plucks the gem out Ingo's right ear with the Master Sword, knocking him off his feet and liberating him from the mind control. Despite being a bit groggy, Ingo wonders what has happened and notices Malon smiling in relief that he is freed, and Link crushes the gem under his foot. Koume and Kotake notice this and order the gerudo not to let Link get away. With Ingo freed, Link tosses more of the gerudo away with a Spin Attack andcalls Epona over using her song. Link, Ingo, and Malon all hop onto Epona's back, with Link instructing Epona to get them all out of the ranch. As Epona gallops toward the exit, a hinged gate is suddently unhinged and drops down. Ingo notices the gate and cries out that they are about to crash. Luckily, Epona leaps over the gate with ease and lands on the other side, with Ingo holding on to her tail. The Gerudo flee soon afterward, and normalcy to the Ranch is restored. Talon states to himself that he will brainwash himself to get some work done, and Malon bids farewell to Epona. Link states that he will return sometime, finishing that drinking milk makes him strong. Malon states to Link to come any time, as they will keep a cow if Link needs more milk, wishing Link good luck. Along the way, Link asks who the Sheik is, and if what he said about Zelda being in the desert is true, to which Navi confirms. Link inquires why, and Navi states she felt it when she heart his harp, finishing they will get going to the wastelands, and Link rides off to the western desert.

• Chapter 6: The Haunted Wasteland

The whole of Zora's Domain, and the Zoras, even King Zora himself, is encased in ice. Link and a now fully grown Ruto swim to the Water Temple, with Ruto leading the way and stating the monastery is this way, and Link, garbbed in the Zora Tunic, states the domain and King Zora; everything is frozen. Ruto states that her father was kind to her, stating her intention to help everyone, to save Zora's Domain, and for Link to help, to which Link complies. As soon as they enter a large chamber, they are ambushed by a savage amoeba monster called Morpha, who coils itself around Link and, despite Ruto's attempts to command it to cease, encases her in a bubble, to Link's horror. The cellular beast swings Link around as Ruto's attempts to break free are futile. After being thrown about the chamber, Link regains his footing and skewers the beast's eye with his hookshot, reducing it to a pool of fluids, breaking the curse over the water temple and freeing the Zoras. Link learns that Ruto is awakened as the Sage of Water, with Ruto stating that the Domain will thaw and return to normal, commenting how worthy he is of being her fiance, the happiest and grandest of weddings, much to Link's shock. Sadly, Ruto decides to call the occasion off, knowing she has to remain as the Sage of Water, and asking where Link will go next. Link replies he is heading to the western desert. Later, Link resupplies his stock on water, meat, and arrows, with Navi saying that from then on they will tread into gerudo territory and urging Link to be cautious before a pair of mysterious fortune tellers state there goes a brave warrior searching for something if not someone. Link asks how they know this, and one of the tellers states their predictions never err, and directs him to go to a large facility called the Spirit Temple; once there he will find his destiny. Link gives them his gratitude, stating he will stop there, with another teller telling her gratitude in turn. The tellers are actually Koume and Kotake in disguise, and they remind Sheik it is his turn. Sheik asks why him, and Kotake asks why he cannot do it, commenting if he is rumored to be really helping the Hero of Time. Koume then wonders who he really is, stating that if he says he is a Sheikah but he might be lying. Sheik states to them not to be ridiculous, and the witches tell him to go, and to prove his unswavering loyalty to Ganondorf. As soon as Sheik strides off, Koume and Kotake remove their disguises and then instruct Nabooru, the Gerudo chieftain, to help capture Link and see if there is any signs of betrayal, which Nabooru obliges. Then, Koume flies high in the sky and counjures a fierce sandstorm, mumbling for the wind to blow, the sands to swirl and to bring the tempest and block Link's path. The sandstorm rages, and Link states he cannot see a thing, stating if the storm does not let up he, Epona, and Navi will be buried in sands. Thankfully, Sheik appears to the rescue and pulls them all out of the sand, beckoning Link to come with him this way, though he scolds him for his recklessness. Link states Sheik helped him again and asks why he always shows up wherever he goes. Sheik remarks on being about to ask the same question, thinking they each want the same things out of life, and the sandstorm subsides. Link asks if he is really fighting Ganondorf. Sheik smirks to this, and then replies that from this point begins the haunted wasteland, a dangerous badland fraught with perils, asking if he will either show Link the way or he try to traverse it on his own. Link chooses option A: show him the way, thinking to himself if he can trust him before mounting onto Epona's back. During the trek, Link states he has always wondered something as to why Sheik always keeps most of his face covered, wondering if the eye and tear marking on Sheik's tabard is truly the Sheikah crest. Sheik reveals it was originally a mere eye, stating that every clan of the Sheikah tribe have had served the Hyrulean royal family since the dawn of time, acting as the family's protective shadowblades, revealing that at one point the royals went rogue against them and they added a single teardrop to the eye, finishing it is a sad myth. Link asks if he still carries a grudge on the Hyruleans, and Sheik remarks it is ancient history, stating it has nothing to do with him now. Later that night, the two men make camp on a patch of sand, with Link stating there is an amazing difference between the country's many tribes, revealing that as a little boy he was raised as a kokiri only to learn he is a hylian human - not just any hylian, but a hero who will save Hyrule, though he is now fighting against the Gerudo, not questioning any of that, it is just he misses the seven years that everyone on the continent has, to him he had parted with Zelda; for her it has been seven years, adding on that when Link thinks of everything that has happened when he would wonder how the years changed her, commenting he is uneasy about seeing the young princess, finishing how can he fill those seven years in and why he is telling Sheik all this. Sheik reminds Link not to mind him, as he is tired. Link expresses gratitude, and they fall asleep, though Epona, like all equids, is sleeping while standing up. For several hours, Link is tormented by phantoms made of sand; first is a mirage of the Great Deku Tree calling to him, whom Link questions how he got to the desert before the mirage fades; the second mirage is a skeletal warrior about to attack Sheik, but Link dispatches the phantom. Disturbed by this, Sheik wakes up and asks what Link is doing, with Link stating there was a skeleton behind him. Sheik states this is the haunted wasteland, as phantoms will rise from the sand to trick unwary adventurers. Link states they look more like those he has seen in his heart from the past, ranging from Impa to Zelda to Darunia to even Volvagia, whose severed head becomes the final mirage to torment him, stating it hurts. Agitated, Link begs for the phantoms to stop it and go away from him, calling out they do not fight fair. Sheik has gotten onto his feet; Link asks if he is alright, to which he confirms, stating he does not see anything odd, as it is merely a desert to him. Confused, Link wonders if Sheik does not see any phantoms, stating when he talked about the history of the Sheikah and asking himself if Sheik does have any pain in his heart, and why. The sun rises over the dunes; Link sees it is morning at last when Navi swoops in, and the sound of hooves reverberate overhead. Sheik states they do not look like phantoms, for he can see them too. A contigent of mounted Gerudo appear, and Link tells Sheik to look out. As soon as the Gerudo surround them, Sheik supposedly betrays Link by smacking him over the head with the hilt of his dagger to remain undercover, disarming him and handing him over to the Gerudo in a town consisting of only women. In one of the foretress' prison cells, Link states to himself Sheik must be a spy for Ganondorf, as he must have fooled him the whole time, and he then meets Nabooru, who asks if Link is the hero who is troubling the dark demonlord, stating he is merely a boy, and demands he get up while kicking him on the sternum, telling him the next dawn she intends to treat him like target practice. Link breaks free using the skills Impa taught him and aquires a cutlass, stating he slipped from the chains a while ago. Taken aback, Nabooru grabs a second cutlass, calling him a mouthy brat, and they do battle, with Link commenting on Nabooru's strength and her being more skilled than any of the gerudo he had fought before. Navi appears in the fortress; Link asks where she has been, and Navi instructs him to break the gem on Nabooru's forehead. When Nabooru makes her move, Link leaps out of the way; when she asks where he is, Link comes down from above and slams his cutlass on the gem on Nabooru's forehead with crushing force. The gem breaks apart, and Nabooru screams in pain and falls onto the floor. Link asks how Navi knew on the gem on Nabooru's forehead, and Navi states it was easy to figure out before Link notices his hookshot being dropped in from an open window. Picking it up, Link uses it to get to the window. Link says to himself that the hundreds gerudo guards and soldiers are all women, asking himself if all gerudo are women and what of Ganondorf. Inside the cell, Nabooru wakes up and asks herself what she is doing in the fortress, newly freed. Afterward, Link and Navi are spotted by gerudo footwomen, and Link demands where the Master Sword is, and one of the gerudo guards calls for her comrades not to let him escape the fortress and to capture him. Seconds later, Sheik appears onto the scene and then hands him his sword before drawing his dagger. Link thinks Sheik wants a fight and draws the Master Sword from its scabbard, staring him down in preparation for what appears to be a duel of honor. Sensing the witches invisible behind him, Sheik spins around and lacerates Koume's left arm to unveil them, making her scream in pain. Kotake accuses Sheik of treason and betrayal, though Sheik rebukes the accusation, stating he was never one of them, which catches Link by surprise. Sheik hands Link his shield and apologies for hitting him earlier, with Link stating he hurt his feelings more than his body, as the two men make a dash for their lives, with Link hacking through enemy lines. The twin witches fly overhead to intercept them, and then, infuriated, Koume shouts they cannot forgive Sheik and immolates him with a gout of fire, knocking him unconcious and leaving him badly burned, to Link's horror. When Link goes to save Sheik while telling him to hang in there, he notices the royal crest of Hyrule on Sheik's right hand, wondering if Sheik is not a Sheikah. Link begs Sheik to stay with him, wondering to himself that Sheik is supposed to be a Sheikah and why he has the symbol of the Triforce on Sheik's right hand.

• Chapter 7: A Fated Reunion

Desperate to get Sheik to safety while clutching him in his right arm, Link fights his way through hundreds of Gerudo, telling them to move out of his way, and Navi gives Link a heads up on an attempted ambush. Nabooru comes in to prevent the ambush, catching Link by surprise and explaining to him that she used the back of her sword and of her intentions to help. Link asks why, and Nabooru replies that though she is a well known thief she not a pure villain like Ganondorf. Navi reveals to Link that Nabooru was corrupted by the witches. Just as Koume can notice this, Nabooru tosses her one of her cutlasses at Koume's broom, making her lose her balance, and Kotake shouts what the rest of the Gerudo are doing and gives them the order to attack. Nabooru instructs Link to leave the fighting to her and for him to treat Sheik's burn wounds, and Link states he is counting on her. Nabooru tries to wrest her tribe free, telling them they need to shape up and wake up. Epona gallops over to Link, though Koume conjures a retinue of lizardmen from the sands, shouting that Link would think they would let him escape. Link rides though the enemy lines on Epona's back, shooting the lizardmen down one by one with arrows, before riding to the grounds of the Spirit Temple, placing Sheik inside a ruined building. Link notices that Sheik looks surprisingly frail, wondering if his wounds before getting a closer look. Then, Link descides to get Sheik some water; Navi states there is an oasis nearby, and Link wonders why he is flustered. Sheik regains consciousness and calls out to Impa, asking where she is, before he notices his face wrapping has fallen off. And soon as Link returns with some water, he drops the bag when Sheik jolts himself around, his right arm clutched over his chest, appearing to be almost feminine. Before Link can say something of Sheik, the lower left part of the Triforce symbole on Sheik's right hand glows, and he is envoloped in a blinding light, catching Link offguard. Seconds later, the light fades away, revealing Sheik's true identity as Princess Zelda. Befuddled, Link mumbles that Shiek is Zelda, asking how can that be true and if it is truly her. Zelda apologizes she had to decieve him. Suddenly, the moment is interrupted when Koume and Kotake appear onto the scene; Koume comes to the realization that they have been made to look like fools, and Kotake asks if they can teach them a lesson. Link tells Zelda to look out and then, a chase ensues all througout the interior of the facility, with Koume threatening to burn their bones black with a gout of fire, inadverdently reducing a good chunk of the wall to molten rock which catches Link by surprise; Kotake joins in when she states she will freeze their souls with icy spirit energy, loosing a powerful gust of cold wind. Link calls they have no weaknesses, and just as Zelda explains there is a very powerful shield that can deflect all types of magic, Link slumps onto the floor, noticing his left leg encased with ice as he is unable to move as the witches laugh, with Link saying that he cannot get out of the ice. Zelda exclaims that the ice is spreading fast; Link tells her to step aside and places both fists on the floor, channeling his strength as he slowly tugs himself forward, which makes the ice tremble and crack. He breaks free within seconds; Koume comments that Link is much too strong as Link and Zelda continue to dash for their lives. Link states he does not see a shield anywhere, and the chase comes to a halt when Link and Zelda reach a dead end. Kotake taunts Link and Zelda by telling them there is no where left to run. Link puts himself between the witches and Zelda, their backs against the wall. Zelda calls out to Link; the witches demand Link to give Zelda over to them, and Koume tries to burn them alive with a stream of fire. Link tries to hold out the fire magic with his shield, but he barely hold out the flames; Koume taunts him by stating the that little shield cannot take much more. Zelda states it is no use as they will burn up. His shield begins to melt from the heat; Link thinks to himself that his rght hand is getting burned, and he cannot take any more. Just as all seemed to be lost, a bight flash of light disrupts the fire spell, catching both witches off guard when Kotake asks what that is; Nabooru has appeared at the right time, and she intructs Link to use the very shield Zelda was taking about and hands it over to Link, giving him a chance to deflect the flames toward Koume and Kotake; they both call out to Ganondorf, stating that cannot be possible; undone by their own magics and as to how, and the witches are reduced to ash. Outside the facility, Nabooru mockingly bids the twins farewell, calling them 'old hags', and Link asks where she got the shield from. Nabooru sheepishly reveals she stole it from the facility a while ago. Navi scolds Nabooru for her carelessness, stating Link had almost perished, to which Nabooru takes the blame. Zelda explains that seven years ago after the palace had fallen, when Link opened the door of time and when Ganondorf went into the sacred realm he had seized the Triforce of Power and become a dark devil lord, stating that she and Impa had to migrate on the run; nearly a decade ago in a small fortress, a shocked Impa exclaims what young Zelda has just said, and young Zelda states if they keep running they will be caught one day, so she will disguise herself as one of Ganondorf's troopers. Impa states it is too dangerous, but before she can ask how, young Zelda will be a boy, and Zelda states that during the coup d'état she realized how powerless she was, that she could hardly hold her frustration back and wanted to be strong enough to look after herself; young Zelda reveals that through the power of the Master Sword, Link is sealed in the Sacred Realm, stating he is to be the Hero of Time and return, and finalizes that until he does she will seal Princess Zelda. Impa reluctantly complies, stating she understands and conferring that hiding under the enemy's nose to be the safest plan, going along with Zelda's intent by stating she should pretend to be a Sheikah tribesman, instructing her to tell the enemy she is a descendant of the Sheikah tribe banished by the Hyrulean royal family long ago, and to say she had returned after hearing of the kingdom's fall to ruin, that they will believe the tale for sure, finalizing that until the time comes, Zelda's conciousness will sleep, to awaken as a Sheikah boy. Young Zelda gives Impa her gratitude for letting her have her way, and Impa elatedly comments that as her guardian she is proud of her wisdom and inner strength, calling her 'my princess' and urging her to take care. Back in the present, Link realizes that is what had happened, and Zelda states that while it was to fool the dark tyrant, she did trick Link and put him in more mortal peril than before. Navi states to Zelda that Sheik was always saving Link, and that she always knew the princess was a kind person. Link states that he will never see Sheik again, but Zelda reassures that she got to fight by Link's side, with Link saying he missed her. Suddenly, the ground quakes, causing the rock formations and even the facility to tremble, and catching Link, Zelda, and Nabooru offguard. Through telepathy, Ganondorf can be heard calling Zelda a 'sly deciever' and accuses her of decieving him for seven years, entraping her in a large crystal. Link tries to break the crystal, asking what it is and calling to Zelda. The dark devil lord pulls the crystal to him with his magic and challenges Link that if wants to save her he will have to come to his citadel before flying away. Link calls out to Zelda, and then furiously to the tyrannical devil.

• Chapter 8: Ganondorf Defeated!

Later that night, Nabooru tells that the Gerudo are a clan of only women, only every century a man is born as chieftain, with one of those men being Ganondorf himself, and admits that she never guessed that Sheik would be Princess Zelda. Link agrees, stating he barely had a chance to touch her when Ganondorf abducted her. Nabooru states Link was holding on to her tightly when they escaped the fortress. Link corrects her that that was Sheik, stating that he only learned later that it was Zelda, stating that at the same time she was Sheik to him, and bemoans that rather than get a happy reunion, he and Zelda were split apart once again. Nabooru states it must be complicated. When Link gets to his feet to put the Master Sword on his back, Nabooru decides she will accompany Link to Ganondorf's citadel, intent on teaching him that there are few things even a master brigand cannot plunder. Link and Nabooru travel to Ganon's castle. Nabooru states that the dark citadel always gives her the chilling creeps, and they are set upon by a group of ghoul like zombies. Link and Nabooru cut them down, with Nabooru stating they are hardly a challenge. When they get to the edge of a cliff, Nabooru states there is a lake of molten lava that consists a moat, wondering how they will get inside the citadel. Rauru calls to Link, asking if he can hear him and stating his name. Link calls to Rauru, and he reveals to Nabooru that the seal is released, instructing her to awaken as the Sage of Spirit. Nabooru learns of this, and when Link calls out to her, she states that while she cannot fight by Link's side she will help him in any way possible. As soon as the Sages state that they will use their power to grant Link access to Ganondorf's citadel, they create a bridge over the moat, expanding from the cliff to the front door of the citadel. Link looks over the bridge, awestruck; Navi asks if Link is going to stare at the bridge all day, and Link and Navi traverse the citadel, fighting their way through hordes of the tyrannical overlord's forces, with Link demanding to know where Ganondorf Is, and when he reaches the highest floor, he slams the door open, revealing a large throne room; Zelda is floating ten meters above the floor, and Ganondorf is playing on a large pipe organ. Zelda wakes up and calls to Link upon noticing him, with Link calling to her in turn before he sees that the Triforce symbol on his left hand glowing, with the same symbol on Zelda's right hand glowing as well. Ganondorf states that the pieces are resonating and that the Triforce wants to be whole once more. The dark tyrant then reveals there were two aspects of the Triforce he could not obtain seven years prior, stating he did not imagine they would be living within Link and Zelda, and that all three aspects of the Triforce - Courage, Wisdom, and Power - are to be assembled so he can have them all and become the absolute ruler the world, with the dark overlord getting up from the organ bench and turning to face Link. The Triforce symbol on Ganondorf's right hand glows, with the dark demonlord stating that to Link they are nothing but toys and then directs Link to give him his aspect immediately. Being the Aspect of Courage, Link refuses to give Ganondorf the Triforce of Courage, determined to stop the dark warlord with the Master Sword in his hands and every bit of courage in his heart, and the climatic one-on-one battle begins; Ganondorf makes the first move by conjuring a gust of wind from the Triforce of Power as per his position as the Aspect of Power, and Navi is removed from the fight when she realizes she cannot get anywhere near Link as the dark warlord is keeping her at bay with waves of devilish darkness. Ganondorf fires lightning orb after lightning orb toward Link, but he dodges them all, leading to the devilish overlord to smash a portion of the floor with a powerful punch, collapsing it to pieces, as Zelda and Navi watch in terror. Ganondorf compliments to Link that he has indeed improved, stating his one mistake was letting him escape seven years ago, further stating he never thought that a little brat like him could get in his path, drawing an odachi from its scabbard and finishing that will end today, leading to a vicious swordfight. Both sides push and shove on each other without relent, and Link courageously replies this is not going to end like it did seven years ago. Ganondorf electrocutes Link with lighting from his odachi and tosses him back, with Link accusing him of cowardice. The dark devil lord asks who the coward is, for he knows Link wields a sword that can banish evil, challenging him to dispel his dark magic if he dares when he looses a volley of dark orbs all over the room; one of the orbs sends Link toward the wall, leaving Navi and Zelda calling out to Link as Zelda closes her eyes in terror. Ganondorf puts his odachi back in its scabbard and conjures a large orb of dark lightning; Navi urges Link to be cautious, and Link calls out it is all or nothing, and the devilish demonlord fires the dark orb foward, shouting it is the finishing blow. Sensing the chance, Link bats the orb with a spin attack, send it homing in on Ganondorf, who blocks his own attack with his left forearm, and before he can state what Link can possibly be, Link charges toward the demonic overlord through the smoke and delivers a mighty two-handed sword swing at Ganondorf's chest that catches him by surprise.

• Chapter 9: A New Journey Begins

Ganondorf screams with agony from the mighty blow Link had just gave, clutching his chest in pain, with Ganondorf stating he cannot be defeated by Link before screaming to the heavens and falling onto the floor. The crystal serving as Zelda's cage dissipates, and she is liberated: Navi apologizes to Link by saying she tried to help but could not, to which Link states it is alright. Suddenly, the castle begins to quake; Link notices it is about to collaspe, and he and Princess Zelda evacuate to safety, with Ganondorf's suppsoed corpse falling through the floor. The citadel crumbles to pieces, with a thunderstorm ongoing, and Zelda states it is just awful, stating that Ganondorf's greed has made his heart too weak to wield the power of the gods, that the war is over once and for all. Link asks if the fight is over, to which Zelda confirms, stating there is no more fighting. Then, the ruined citadel quakes. Driven by curiosity, Link walks to the rubble to investigate. Then, all of a sudden, Ganondorf leaps up from the rubble; Link and Zelda learn that he has survived. The Triforce of Power symbol on Ganondorf's right hand glows brightly, and in his demonic rage, the dark overlord shapeshifts himself into a huge, powerful beast.. his devilish true form, as he gives out a terrifying roar. Link wonders aloud if the Triforce of Power has gone amok, and Zelda replies it is filled with Ganondorf's hatred for him. Ganon swings his shivs down toward Link, and he leaps out of the way, comments on the dark overlord's monstrous size and states if he wants to play rough then so be it, as he tries to attack him. Ganon roars loudly, snarls Link's name, and swings his shivs down on him sending him careening onto the ground. Zelda calls out to Link in fear; Ganondorf stomps foward, and Navi joins the battle before dodging a vicious swing frantically. Zelda grabs the Master Sword on the hilt and tosses it to Link, calling for him to take it. Ganon takes notice and readies for a savage swing; Zelda defiantly stands her ground, and despite being serously bruised, Link rearms himself and states to the dark devil lord that he is making the same mistake; not to count him out, and he darts behind him with blinding speed and finishes that until the fight is over before swinging down on the end of Ganon's tail, slicing it open. Ganon howls in pain, and Navi notes on the dark overlord's tail as his weak point; Link dodges another of Ganon's swings, and when he tries to parry another swing, the force is too much, and he is tossed onto the ground. Ganon swings his tail toward Link, and yet Link presses his attacks on in spite of all the pain, all and when Ganondorf preoares one final swing, Link siezes his chance and leaps upward, catching the dark devil lord by surprise. With a mighty roar, Link slices the beast's nose and lower lip with impeccable force, knocking him down with Ganon snorting and squealing like a wild boar. Link takes a moment to catch his breath before he notcies a bright and powerful light gleaming from the Master Sword. Zelda states that the Master Sword is telling him that he is at maximum power, finishing that it is saying to immediately finish the dark lord. With heavy breathing, Link steps over Ganon, and at last defeats the demonlord by plunging the Master Sword into his brain. Zelda calls forth the Six Sages to open the eternal gates and seal the dark warlord forever to a distant world in the nether, though not before Ganondorf swears vengeance on the Sages, as well as Link and Zelda's descendants before he disappears into the twisting. At last, the war is over, with Zelda stating the demonlord is sealed in a dark realm. Although Link volunteers to help rebuild the whole of Hyrule, Zelda states when the kingdom entes a time of peace, it is when they must part ways, which shocks Link. Zelda reveals that prior to Ganondorf raiding the Triforce, she had tried to rule the Sacred Realm, a foolish decision on her part, and the dark devil was able to steal the Triforce, thus drawing Link into the Great Cataclysm War, finalizing that as the Aspect of Wisdom and the seventh Sage, it is her duty to put the Master Sword to a state of sleep and close the time door; when she does, the passageways of time will be nigh inaccessable, and then instructs Link to give the Ocarina of Time to her so she can send Link back. Link states he did not fight due to the Cataclysm; he fought for Zelda. Both pleased and distraught, Zelda states that due to her father's untimely passing, she must sit on the throne of Hyrule as it's queen, a responsibility to uphold as well as a great honor, stating that heroes are not needed in times of peace, finishing that Link should be in Kokiri Forest where he can be happy. Taking to the knee, Link vows that no matter where he is or when he is he will fight for Hyrule and for Zelda herself before handing the Ocarina of Time over. Zelda plays the ocarina and sends Link back to his childhood, expressing gratitude and a sad farewell to him, with Navi stating to Link he is a magnificent hero and that the forest will be safe with him before confessing her feelings, and he is transported to the Master Sword chamber in the depths of the Temple of Time, though the transportation catches him offguard. With the Master Sword in its pedestal, Link leaves the temple. In the Kokiri Forest, one of the Kokiri tries to cheer a despondent Mido up saying the Great Deku Tree has had an infant. The bell rings as people in the city are strolling about and selling goods, while in the palace, as butterflies flutter about, Link and Zelda meet one another again, thus bringing the tale to an end.

Ocarina of Time- Bonus Story[]

• The Skull Kid and the Mask (Part 1)

During the Deku Festival, Link is cast as the main role, the Fairy Prince. This angers Mido which drives him to steal Link's mask, leading to a rompus between Link and Mido after the latter's failed attempt to find the mask beforehand. Link and Saria run into the rather dangerous Lost Woods to recover the mask, though Saria explains that anyone foolish enough to wander in the woods are doomed to never return. They meet the Skull Kid, who returns the stolen mask, only to suddenly lacerate Link's right cheek with a blow dart and abduct Saria, threatening to claim her face for himself if his request for a new mask is not met before fleeing, leaving a bleeding Link devastated.

• The Skull Kid and the Mask (Part 2)

At a hidden grove, the Baga Tree reveals that Link came from outside the forest, making the Skull Kid think he detests adults. After a failed assassination attempt, the Skull Kid is soon plagued by memories, and subsequently liberates Saria from prison, directing her to get away and never return. Noticing this, the Bagga Tree sends the forest spirits after her and accuses the Skull Kid of treason. Link learns from a gossip stone that Saria is being hunted by a predatory monster and rushes to save her. When the Bagga Tree makes his move, the Skull Kid takes what is meant for Link and is mortally wounded. Before all could be lost, Mido and his party arrive in the nick of time and expunge the Bagga Tree, with Mido crushing the beetle that possessed it. The Great Deku Tree reveals the Skull Kid will hopefully recover from the wounds, and the play begins as scheduled, this time with the roles switched. In the end, the newly recovered Skull Kid obtains a new mask.

Hero of Time- Bonus Story[]

• Rouru of the Watarara

Link and Navi rest at the Fishing Hole. Link catches Rouru, a young member of the bird-folk tribe, the Watarara. Link shows Rouru to Dr. Mizumi, who reveals that he fell during migration. A heated argument leads to Navi leaving Link's side. Suddenly, a pair of Flare Dancers appear, conjuring a massive tornado that ravages the wildlands and farms alike. Link, at first, feels hopeless due to the foul statements he said to Navi, but is pleased Navi arrives at the nick of time, reminding him that the enemy is inside the twister. Reminding Rouru to take risks in order to make the progress, Link leaps and stops the Flare Dancers, only to fall from the sky. Link and Navi reconcile during the descent. Rouru tries to rescue Link, his flight feathers sprouting from his arms, but Link is too heavy for him to fly to safety. Luckily, Elrora, Rouru's mother, comes to save them both. Rouru soon apologizes to Navi for his earlier actions before he and his clan begin the migration, with Rouru promising to come back in a year.

• Although the manga is non-canon, certain aspects from it would be incorporated into later games in the franchise:
  • Ganondorf trapping Saria in a painting would be used regarding Yuga's means of abducting the sages in A Link Between Worlds.
  • Link would adopt a ponytail in Breath of the Wild. On a similar note, the Sheikah's backstory of being betrayed and expelled by the Hyrule Royal Family was later used as the basis for the backstory for the Yiga clan in the same game, and Sheik disguises himself as Talon via magic in a similar manner to the Yiga clan.
  • Ganondorf's command to Phantom Ganon to kill Link before Saria awakens resembled a similar command he gave in Tears of the Kingdom before the Phantom Ganon boss fight at Hyrule Castle.
  • The Rito race in The Wind Waker was based on the Watarara race in the manga, with it being made more apparent with their designs in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
