History[edit]

Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World[edit]

Poochy Pup
Three Poochy Pups following Yoshi

In Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World, the Poochy Pups are introduced to the player at the end of the opening cutscene, where Poochy calls them out from the Poochy Hut to play with everyone.

If the player is using Mellow Mode, then they can have the Poochy Pups join Yoshi in each stage. The trio replace Yoshi's yarn balls, following him and being able to be thrown just like the item. This is to the point where Yoshi cannot have yarn balls follow him while the Poochy Pups are active: loose ones fall off the screen when collected and swallowing enemies has the yarn ball dissipate on the spot. Yarn Baskets do not create yarn balls either. Unlike yarn balls, gravity begins to act on a Poochy Pup once it bounces off a surface. Poochy Pups bounce somewhat erratically, but bounce back to Yoshi after the fourth impact. They also rebound back to Yoshi if they hit a Winged Cloud or spikes. Poochy Pups can collect hearts and Wonder Wool, unlike yarn balls, though they bounce off of Wonder Wool as though they hit a Winged Cloud. Poochy Pups do not become loose and non-damaging if Yoshi uses his tongue on them. If all three Poochy Pups are out of Yoshi's reach for any reason, Yoshi throws red yarn balls instead. Yoshi can throw up to three red yarn balls in this way before a short cooldown begins, perhaps imitating how Yoshi can normally hold six yarn balls. While Yoshi is in the air, Poochy Pups have a flying animation where they twirl their tail.

The Poochy Pups additionally help the player throughout the whole game. Sometimes, one will rush ahead to tackle an enemy, affecting it exactly like it was hit with a thrown Poochy Pup/yarn ball. They are more likely to do this for enemies that can be tied up, like Piranha Plants. This has no effect on Tap-Taps, but the Poochy Pups will try to attack fruitlessly. This attack is usually completed with a final jump, after which the Poochy Pup bounces back to Yoshi. If this jump misses, the Poochy Pup trips and is stuck for a short time. A Poochy Pup can jump ahead to objects with bows, Present Boxes, invisible Winged Clouds, hidden passages, invisible wireframes, enterable Warp Pipes, places leading to any of the prior objects plus Smiley Flowers, and Spring Balls. In the case of all but the last of these, the Poochy Pup will bark to indicate that it found something. This also reveals the Winged Cloud's location. In the later it bounces on the Spring Ball to indicate Yoshi can do the same. The Poochy Pups can do this even if there are solid objects like Ice Blocks in the way, and can even jump to locations that are offscreen. The place they are landing in does not necessarily have to be a place where the Poochy Pup can stand, because they can fly. After the player finds the secret, uses the item, or walks away, the Poochy Pup will bounce back to Yoshi. After going through the Goal Ring, the Poochy Pups celebrate alongside Yoshi.

A button on the Touch Screen is a pocket for the Poochy Pups. By touching it, the Poochy Pups jump away into the foreground, while they are represented by the light blue one on jumping into the pocket. In this state, Yoshi can collect and throw yarn balls as normal, but cannot use the infinite supply of red yarn balls. If the button is used again, the light blue Poochy Pup hops out while all three return to the Top Screen. If Yoshi has any yarn balls at this point, the yarn balls will vanish. This toggle cannot be used in certain cases such as while transformed. Since the Poochy Pups are yarn ball replacements, they do not appear during cutscenes aside from the opening cutscene but will hop back onscreen once a cutscene ends. If the Poochy Pups are out when Yoshi is transformed, each of them sits on one of the clocks in the stage that Yoshi collects.

In the Poochy Dash mode, the Poochy Pups appear in each stage as collectables. Once found, each one joins Poochy in running to the goal. Once past the goal, different animations play based on the number of Poochy Pups found. Collecting a Poochy Pup gives the player a bonus of 50 beads at the end of the stage, in the form of a firework pattern appearing.

Yoshi's Crafted World[edit]

The three Poochy Pups return in Yoshi's Crafted World, where they are hidden throughout the flip side of each level. Yoshi is required to find all three and bring them to the goal. A Poochy Pup can be heard barking if it is nearby; once a Poochy Pup is collected, it follows Yoshi and can be thrown like a Yoshi Egg and reused as in Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World. Poochy Pups are also hidden throughout the game's official website, each of which rewards the player with 50 Platinum Points for My Nintendo when found.

Their behavior may be a reference to the behavior of the smaller Poochy from Yoshi's Story.
