- “I have both brains and beauty. Many are inexorably drawn to me. I'm also athletic, musical, and possessed of a heart of gold. Not only am I all these things, I'm the model of humility as well.”
- —Adaphne, Mario & Luigi: Brothership
Adaphne is a supporting character in Mario & Luigi: Brothership. She is yellow-skinned with brown hair and is dressed in a red outfit. A self-proclaimed "god-level" genius, she looks down upon her fellow inventor, Technikki. She is also infatuated by Luigi, whom she calls her "green genius". Adaphne's name is a portmanteau of "adapter" and the given name "Daphne".
History[edit]
Background[edit]
Dr. Vulko states that Adaphne "detailed a new theory of locomotion" when she was born instead of crying.
Sometime before the events of the game (and presumedly before Concordia split apart), she competed in the Genius Competition in Merrygo. She won the last three of five rounds, and thus the competition as a whole—her third win in a row. Her winning invention incorporated Connectar into its design and could generate power from "perpetual commotion" (a pun on perpetual motion), though no one in the crowd could understand or care about her explanation of its creation. Afterwards, she spoke to Technikki, condescendingly congratulating her, an "average" genius, on winning the first two rounds of the Genius Competition. Technikki would go on to create Clockout Blow based on Adaphne's winning invention.
It is implied that Adaphne never had any real friends. If her design modification for Shipshape Island is rejected, she mentions that she does not care about not being involved in the plan, but that she might have thought differently if she "had friends like [Mario and Luigi's] in [her] younger days".
Mario & Luigi: Brothership[edit]
Mario and Luigi travel to Jellyfish Island in search of Adaphne, so that she may help them bypass the barrier around Fortress Zokket. There, in Club Dyode, she is asleep on an inner tube in the pool. Once awoken, she informs the brothers that she will help them if they make her a Jellyfish Pizza, as the chef is taking a day off. Falling in love with Luigi as he makes the pizza, she requests that the brothers make her Jellyfish Pizzas every day.
After Jellyfish Island is connected, Adaphne travels to Shipshape Island with her assistants. Her idea to get past Fortress Zokket's barrier is to have Shipshape travel underwater, utilizing her Oxygenerator system. However, she demands that everyone other than her assistants and Luigi leave for Jellyfish Island while she works on modifying Shipshape. If Adaphne's idea is rejected in favor of Technikki's plan of flying over the barrier, she and her assistants return to Jellyfish Island.
In the "Dueling Geniuses" side quest, Adaphne tasks Luigi with collecting three Zokket Alloys to make the "best boots", giving him the Adaphne Scope to do so. Mario and Luigi can either collect the Zokket Alloys with the Adaphne Scope to receive the Adaphne Boots, or get help from Technikki, who upgrades the Adaphne Scope into the Technikki Scope Deluxe. This leads to Technikki working together with Adaphne to create the Adaphnikki Boots, with Adaphne only agreeing due to it supposedly being Luigi's idea. Creating either pair of boots completes the side quest.
Following Reclusa's awakening, if Technikki modified Shipshape, Adaphne saves Mario, Luigi, Snoutlet, and Cozette on a rocket she created, flying them back to Shipshape Island. If Adaphne modified Shipshape, Technikki, IDLE, Princess Peach, Starlow, and Dorrie instead save the heroes as Adaphne's engine makes the submerging getaway, with the Oxygenerator bubbles shielding the islands from Reclusa's Doom Blooms.
During the credits, Adaphne can be seen meeting with Technikki in Lottacoins.
