My kids thought it was funny, my wife hated it. This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. While my I found the humor fun, I found the inclusion of information fantastic. I loved that the back of the book also offers further information on the varieties of ants presented. While my kid is a bit young to fully understand the information presented, she really enjoyed the counting element. This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. I am of two minds about this book. On the one hand, I love all the facts about ants and their behavior. I had no idea there were so many different kinds! On the other hand, I feel like the desire to share these facts sometimes clashes with the equally strong desire to make this appealing to kids — in particular, the jokey illustrations (boomboxes? hats?) and language. My wife, a preschool teacher, said her class would’ve definitely missed all the information because they would’ve been too distracted by all the talk of butts, and some would’ve been turned off by the picture of the main character completely swarmed by ants. A good attempt, but fell a bit short for me. This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. This was super cute and my kids (4 & 8) really enjoyed it. It had a good balance between being informative but silly enough to keep their attention. The only they would have changed is that they were hoping there was going to be a page where it showed the comparative size of each ant. This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. This book is super adorable! I love the way the MC talks to the reader, and the (though there are supposed to be zero) ants! Funny, well written, and full of interesting ants and what makes them special. Another nice book layer is counting from 0-10. Plus, great back matter that shares about each ant. Vibrant illustrations and succinct just right text. Perfect picnic location, no ants, more ants, a surprise guest, and plenty of FUN! Two thumbs up! Five stars My daughters don’t usually want to read a book more than once but they asked me and my wife to read it two then two nights in a row. It’s charming and my 3 year old can read it This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. Charming book that includes more facts about ants than I expected. This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. This book was so cute!!!! I loved it and so did my class. They had so many questions about ants after which lead to great conversations. This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. Silly picture book about ants, perfect for early childhood classrooms or home reading. A young girl wants to have a picnic in the park but worries that ants will ruin it. She soon discovers that there are lots of different kinds of ants and becomes fascinated by the variety. Part science and nature, part counting and part silliness, children will love this book. Book Review: "There Are No Ants in This Book" by Rosemary Mosco"There Are No Ants in This Book" by Rosemary Mosco is a delightful exploration of the tiny but fascinating world of ants. The book’s beautiful illustrations are captivating, though they do resemble many of the design styles already present in today's children's book market. Still, they effectively bring to life the busy, bustling world of these tiny creatures in a way that is sure to capture young readers' imaginations. What truly stands out is the wealth of information packed into the story. The sheer number of ant species mentioned, along with intriguing facts about their behavior, is certain to spark curiosity and encourage further exploration among readers. Insect lovers, in particular, will find this book enjoyable and informative. One drawback is the font size, which can be quite small and challenging to read, especially in dim lighting when reading to a child. Despite this, the book is a good read overall, offering an educational and entertaining experience that both children and parents will appreciate. Rating: 4/5 A kid with glasses and a bucket hat declares they've found the perfect place for a picnic: "See, there are no ants in this book. It says so on the cover! Ants love to eat picnic food, and I do not want to share." Of course, there ARE ants - all kinds! They introduce themselves one at a time, up to ten, with what kind of ant they are, and while the kid is dismayed at first, they decide it's actually pretty cool ("I think I like ants"), even hiding them under their hat when an anteater comes around. Back matter includes "about the ants in this book" (acorn ant, dinosaur ant, pharaoh ant, winnow ant, etc.), with an illustration, scientific name, description, and location. Playfully fourth-wall-breaking and informative. |
