Superb and suspenseful mystery with a subdued social message, it's a mixture of noir and Western. It was nominated for three Academy Awards--Best Actor (Spencer Tracy); Best Director (John Sturges) and Best Screenplay. The pacing is terrific and taut and I suppose we should mostly credit Sturges for that. But Tracey is absolutely wonderful in the leading role. A man with a crippled arm, he's far from helpless. A certain scene where he takes down a bully judo style will stay with me forever. show more One to watch. show less
WWII POWs plot a massive escape attempt to distract German resources.
Lots of potential, but a pretty boring movie. I had no investment in any of these people. After looking online, it seems that the people on which the characters are based were actually pretty interesting. But in the movie we get "I like to ride bikes."

Elaborate comedy mix-ups in a faux-Western. Not PC in any way whatsoever.
Watched a long time ago and loved it. Re-watched with a son's teen-aged children, who walked out sporadically when the action slowed down; it seems a little sillier now, and is definitely much slower-paced than current films, but was still hilarious.

Gunslingers defend a village from bandits.
It's no Seven Samurai, but it's still a pretty darn good movie. It really bothered me that all of the gun sound effects are identical, though. I could barely pay attention to the final shoot-out, it's so distracting.
