Notes: Constantly captured by its brilliance, it's a comic book chef-d'œuvre, with meaty text and a complex, layered storyline.

Dog carcass in alley this morning, tire tread on burst stomach. This city is afraid of me. I have seen its true face.
The streets are extended gutters and the gutters are full of blood and when the drains finally scab over, all the vermin will drown.
The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout "Save us!"... and I'll look down and whisper "No.”

Thanks a lot, Shruti! Yes, this book blew my mind when I first read it (the second time too, for that matter), and I'm not the sort to have my mind easily blown.

Yes, same here. I always find things I hadn't noticed and see things differently every time I go through it. There's a great re-readability factor with it. Being dubbed a "modern classic" is a double-edged sword, you mention being over-hyped as a consequence, but I think it's more than deserving of that moniker. It's still relevant and a topic of conversation thirty years later.

It's great that you liked it! I wasn't as fond of the book but I feel like a second read through would help me build a greater appreciation for it. I don't normally like to compare book versions to movie versions, but I'm curious if you've seen the movie and what you think of it. If you've seen it, how do you think the movie adaptation stacked up to the original book?

It's certainly a complex book, and I'm sure a second reading would help greatly. I know every time I read it I notice things that passed me by previously. You seem open to a re-read, so at least it left a favorable enough impression for that to be the case.
I have seen the film, and I do feel that it's as good an adaptation as can be done for a book like this. It's pretty much a shot for shot reproduction, so you can't say Zack Snyder wasn't faithful to the source material. I thought that it went a little crazy with the stylized special effects and the licensed period music, but otherwise I enjoyed it, though it didn't blow me away or anything.
The book, however, is one of my all-time favorite books, and unless the film was one of my all-time favorite films, it's always going to compare unfavorably.

I've picked this graphic novel up several times, and each time I find something in it that I did not pick up earlier. The first time around I didn't even get anything about Ozymandias's plan, save for its end result of course.
The movie, by contrast, I've only seen twice, and didn't feel like I got anything new from the second viewing. Though it might just be since I'd read the comic so often.
Comic's great.

That's often the case with books over film. With film you're seeing someone else's interpretation of the source material, someone else's casting, someone else's sense of what's important and what's not. It's very much a passive activity. With books you have time to think, flip back to view things again, pause to take a closer look at things and generally have the means and luxury to linger, discover and contemplate.

It was very mind blowing and epically shocking in most parts. It’s hard to believe how a superhero comic can be so engrossing and story driven.

Yes, my thoughts exactly when I first read this. I think you'll find it a different experience altogether if you read it a second time. It's one of those books where you gain something new every subsequent reading :)

I love it too. Though, the primary reason for purchasing this edition was because it was the hardcover available at the time. The additional art was a lucky additional perk :)

I bought the new one with the black and yellow faces when I was in the UK, it's so dull, but what can you do, lol.

You got to take what you can get with comics. Either that or go digital :)

Yes, you're not alone in that. Definitely one that has fans split. Glad you still enjoyed the book :)

Well, it's a maxiseries, and if you're not into it to start, it can be a pretty long haul. Plus, it's one of those things that people either really love or they don't see as special at all. In the end, all experience and opinion is subjective. 🤷♂️

I'm afraid I've never been so much a fan of either Swamp Thing or Alan Moore to go out of my way to check it out. Though, I hear it's very good.

Perhaps if I ever decided to dip into Alan Moore's oeuvre I'd consider it, but it's never really held any appeal for me.
