I just want to say that when I read “The Book of Cold Cases” by this author, I deemed her my favorite author because I loved that book so much! However, the next few books I read after “Cold Cases” have been mediocre for me, including this latest release. Now, I’m not sure if it’s because my expectations are so high or because my tastes have swayed a bit. Whatever has happened, I’m just not quite feeling it. This book started off super strong for me, and then about halfway through I started to lose interest. I even felt as if this book could have been written for a YA audience (or maybe I’m just getting too old).
In this story we have newlyweds, Eddie Carter and April Delray (she hasn’t even had time to change her name yet). Eddie and April are headed to their honeymoon at the Five Pines Resort, when they realize they are lost and heading in the wrong direction. They are on the road of Atticus Line when they see a lone woman walking down the side of the road in the middle of the night. They stop, pick up the lone woman and it isn’t until they are driving that they realize this unknown woman is bleeding to death in their backseat.
Eddie and April take the bleeding woman, who had multiple stab wounds to her stomach to the hospital. It is there the woman dies, and Eddie and April are suddenly treated as suspects in the woman’s murder. Little do Eddie and April know that there have been several murders in the town of Coldlake Falls, which they are now in. All of the murders go back over 19 years, and all of them on Atticus Line. Who did this? Is there a serial killer on the loose? Or is there something much more dangerous at hand?
I did enjoy Eddie and April’s backstories in this. However, the paranormal element was lacking for me. I think I was expecting more creepiness, maybe more of a twist (I figured it out early on), so something was missing for me. Maybe I read too many suspense novels, or paranormal just isn’t my thing anymore- but this just didn’t knock my socks off like I thought it would.
Murder Road was definitely a middle of the road rating for me…

Good question about what is happening for you as a reader, Rachel. I have found that sometimes I just need to move away from the author. Sometimes they may be becoming formulaic, or I may be finding I am less attracted to that style of writing. I use to love Colleen Hoover. Now, I don't read her. And Lee Child. Not anymore. Are they formulaic? Not always, but I've changed my interests and expectations too as a reader. What is important is that Rachel, you are recognizing that you are evolving as a reader. Go with it. Enjoy what you choose. I love your reviews. You are honest with yourself and us. And that makes you special! Thank you for this wonderful honest review! 🥰

Thank you, Srivalli!! Yes, it definitely needed to go up on the creepy factor for me. :)

Thank you so much, Karen!! 💗 It’s sometimes such a strange feeling to grow as a reader, because for me I want to stay loyal to certain authors and love all their books- but like you stated we just start to outgrow their style of writing or become less attracted to that style of writing. Their books are not bad books, they are just not for me anymore (or maybe not at this point in my life). Karen, your reviews are always spot on and very honest as well, and I enjoy to read them very much too!! 🤗

Excellent review Rachel. I have never read the author but have seen so many great reviews of this book. Perhaps I'll start with the book of cold cases and go from there as you preferred that one :)

Thank you, Luna!! There are many great reviews for this book- but as you can see it just wasn’t my favorite… If you do start with The Book of Cold Cases, I hope you enjoy that book as much as I did! :)

Excellent review. I started on this author's first book awhile back and never finished it. It was good as well in the beginning and then towards the middle I started to loose interest. I figured out how it would end and then moved on. Thought I would try again. Cold Case might be a place to try again. Thanks for your view.

Thank you, Kerry!! I’ve had the same problem with the author’s past few books- where they start off pretty strong, then they seem to lose steam towards the middle and never really pick up. I do however recommend Cold Case- one of my top favorites!! :)

I still need to read The Book of Cold Cases and you might convince me!! I’ll be sure to read that one first before picking up any of her other works. Fantastic review, Rachel! 🤗

Great conversational type review...As you wrote, our tastes do certainly seem to change as we "mature" and having probably read umpteen of these kinds of stories and gravitate towards deeper. more helpful/meaningful ones perhaps?.... I hear you there!
Aww, yet again Karen, your wisdom and graciousness extends with the kid response....many of us all may be more inclined to varying styles and subject matter as we go through the years.... Our clothing styles, decor, etc all "blossom" over time, so why not what we are drawn to explore with different books? :)

WHL(Bill), so glad we agree on this one. You stated it perfectly- this book was good, but it certainly did not wow me!

Thank you, Cindy!! Our tastes definitely do change as we “mature”. And yes, I’ve read many stories like this one, so I do expect more going in… I’m glad most readers can relate to my review and feelings towards this review and other books in general. :)

My reading tastes and preferences are probably on the eccentric/unusual border at times perhaps these years but I am desiring more worthwhile so to speak/older unknown gems,/ and checking out & possibly helping new authors. As I would say to any of my friends here, read what appeals to you, be your own unique self as the good Lord created you :D

You are welcome! I can definitely relate....remember, you are allowed to like or dislike/not be in awe as we all are, even though some annoying readers get rather off the head if others aren't as gung ho as them

A fair review, Rachel! 💗 I hope your next book is a winner!! I have discovered my tastes have changed too. As I have gotten older, I have reread books I read in my youth and have a different perspective— and appreciate it more.

Oh, I completely get your feelings about this, Rachel! So many times, we enjoy an author's novel and pick up their other works with great enthusiasm, only to have them disappointing us. Sorry this was a mixed bag as well. If you still give this author another try in future, I hope it works out better. Love your honest review! 💙

Chris, it definitely kept the socks on! Lol! This book does have a supernatural element (as do most if not all of her books). Also, thank you so much for liking my review!

100% agree with you! I was a huge St James fan, but after this one… meh. I was definitely waiting for another twist, which didn’t happen. It also didn’t seem as intricate or developed as her others - I think your YA comment may be spot on! Cheers and more happy reading to you!
