Everything in here is good, but a couple really got my attention.
Sam Wallman's fascinating A Covert Gaze at Conservative Gays, discussing the phenomenon of conservative gays. Like my best friend from high school. Back then I was way too closed-minded for him to come out to me so we couldn't have a real relationship then. But now that I’ve grown and learned and have striven to become a better person, we can’t have a relationship because he’s a right-wing brainwashed person, sharing the most far-fetched and obscure right-wing conspiracy theories. Like, remember when Pelosi plotted with those dudes to attack the White House with missiles during the Trump administration? *sigh*
And I had heard of The Lavender Scare (on the heels of the Red Scare), but didn’t know the details.
I felt like I could relate to I Am More Than My Chromosome by Elisabet Rún. But then I have been focused on the fucked up gender binary the last few years.
I wasn’t expecting any of this! Further adventure with Angel and crew.

What a fantastic book! Fish out of water stories are great because they’re so relatable! And Jerry Craft knows how to write real, relatable people.

Plus the subtle micro-aggressions you know people have to deal with ALL the time. This book does a perfect job of parodying white people trying (and failing) to be woke.
And, ew! The dead fish handshake. I knew someone like this growing up. It was soooo weird!

The summer recreation I went to in elementary school had this big family of bullies. And they dominated the four-square court! Especially the high school kids. I haven’t thought about that in years!
Anyway, this was quite a different take on the superhero story. Jerry Craft likes to write about issues that kids deal with on a day to day basis. As an adult, it feels like it almost hits you over the head with the lessons - but because his writing is so enjoyable, you almost don’t notice. I am curious what the reception is like among younger kids, though. I think maybe it’s for a younger crowd, so maybe the lessons wouldn’t be so blatantly obvious to them?
Either way, I thought it was worth reading. And it does have a great anti-bullying message. ...more

TherI wish I would have read this years ago when it was fresh and new. It was creative and interesting, but it just didn't suck me in like I'd hoped. There's a Mike Allred documentary on Kickstarter right now, and I thought it would be good to finally check out his work. I think I have the Superman/Madman crossover around here somewhere, but I don't think I've read that, either. Everyone seems to think this is the penultimate Madman story, so should I check out the other Madman stuff? ...more

Wow. Kinda blown away. What a weird an interesting story! Though it does slightly remind me of an old short story I read in Omni magazine years and years ago. From what I remember, anyway.
But this was some great storytelling. Funny and suspenseful at different turns. I will definitely find and read the rest of this series. ...more

I just happened to stumble upon this comic at the library and had no idea The Thrilling Adventure Hour had such a history! So hilarious! And so much fun! For some reason - even though i read the back - I forgot they were going to be monster hunters. Which made it even more fun!
And something that I hope I can say about myself sometime in the future:
We are astute despite being tootled.
And sometimes the best quotes are best out of context.
Your purse monster must be mistaken.
I’ll definitely check out the other graphic novels....more

This comic is amazing. There are laughs all the way through. She breaks the fourth wall the perfect amount. And there’s some intellectual banter. I want to know how the hell I’ve never even heard of Marcel Proust before, considering he’s considered to be one of the greatest (some say the greatest) novelists of the 20th century. Did i wake up in an alternate reality? There’s a pun about the first line of his famous 7-volume novel. Which I don’t remember knowing about either.
I love the irony, when, after making Marcel Proust and Hadrian’s Wall references, Josie asks if a Mean Girls reference is dated.
Ah. Riverdale stories are timeless. I grew up on used issues of Archie, Jughead, Betty, and Veronica’s exploits.
It’s so fun, and so self-aware, and so smart! And silly and dumb at the same time. But being self-aware, it knows it, and makes it part of the fun.
