Hitler, My neighbor is a novel, originally published in French (Hitler, mon voisin – Souvenirs d'un enfant juif ), in 2013, revolving around a young boy who lived in Munich, very near to the house where Adolf Hitler lived at the time. The timeline covers one part of the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party (early 30's) in Germany. In his memoir, Freuchtwanger describes his brief childhood encounters with the Führer during the years they were neighbors. This was definitely a poweful and interseting read. It provides an overview of the elements of a child standpoint on the change that was unfortunately coming, and even though the events that followed marked one of the darkest periods of human existence, I still liked that child's voice, because it somehow made this book a bit lighter....more

This review is extremely hard to write, just as this book was exceptionally hard to read. I've read dozens of book about holocaust and saw dozens of movies on this topic, but this book had a huge impact on me. Right after first few chapters, I had to put it down just to compose myself. I knew what I was getting myself into, and I've read about Mengele experiments before, but this was very graphic. Eva Mozes Kor is a survivor in every sense of the word. She is a survivor of the Holocaust who, with her twin sister Miriam, was subjected to human experimentation under Josef Mengele at Auschwitz. She was literally turned into a "human guinea pig". Her whole family was deported to Auschwitz in 1944, and she never saw them again. Eva and her identical twin, Miriam, survived the deadly genetic experiments conducted by The Angel of Death, Josef Mengele and they lived to tell. Today, she is a lecturer, forgiveness advocate, public speaker, activist, and a founder of CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Terre Haute, Indiana. As human beings must never forget more than 6 million Jews that perished, but also the ones who survived. This book should be a part of a school curriculum, to show young people what holocaust is, but also to open everyone's eyes to the fact that it still happens today. ...more
I just read a beautiful story. First and foremost, I would like to thank Maya Berger for sending me this wonderful book. I don't know Maya personally, except the fact that we are friends on Goodreads, but I really admire her courage and strength. I was deeply moved by this book and her story. I have a huge respect self published authors and this is a self published memoir. It takes a lot of guts to put your thoughts and experience on paper and reveal them to the world. Maya's writing is great and I felt like I could easily connect with her and her feelings. In the begging of her story, she writes about her family and her need to protect them and take care of them, and I just had an impression she was way too mature for her age at that time of her life. It's like seeing a young woman trapped in a body of a child. I myself, sometimes felt like that. Like I had to carry everyone's burdens on my back.
But, let me get to back to the storyline. Maya is a thirty nine year old woman. She is smart, educated and she finally met a great guy - Luca. Of course, that was not an easy task. (I feel you Maya. I am still searching for that right one:)) When she finally has it all, she starts experiencing back pain. Long story short, no one knows what is wrong with her. After months of unsuccessful physical therapies and doctor visits, she finally has her diagnosis. Ankylosing Spondylitis, a very rare autoimmune disease. She starts traveling the world in search of a cure for her condition. Ultimately, she starts using healing energy. I was not familiar with her diagnosis or healing energy, so thank you Maya for sharing your journey with us readers. I don't want to reveal too much with this review, so I simply suggest you read it! Overall, this is an honest portrayal of one woman's struggle to overcome her sickness and finally achieve her dreams.
