But maybe all of my wannabe lady detective stories are all starting to blur together? It just felt so familiar: the characters, the setting, the basic premise. But none of the character names trigger any memories of a previous story. May need to do some detectiving of my own......more

It was a typical rom-com in that it was full of misunderstandings and pining and quirky characters. But it was also a lovely, cathartic read for me since it deals with the grief of losing a parent and having things left unsaid and just how hard the holidays can be with all of that looming over your head and your heart.
I've loved every one of Adriana Mather's novels I've read, but this is my new favorite. I'm so excited for her foray into adult novels -- and a romantic comedy at that -- and I can't wait to see what she writes next!...more

But this book was nothing like what I expected from a book about werewolves.
To be fair, and I'm not certain it was intentional -- though the nods to it in the book specifically make me think so -- but this read like Twilight fanfiction. But like, if all the books had been rolled into one, lol. This book is long and takes place over many years, so a lot happens, yeah. A lot...and it's very gay, but very good.
It was a roller coaster, for sure. I ran the full gamut of emotions with this one. From being ecstatic to finding out that one of the side characters is named Elizabeth Bennett, to giddy with anticipation and then upon doing some math being slightly squicked out, to being utterly, unapologetically devasted. (Like, the age gap is not great but it's not Twilight not great, ya know?)
I liked it. I had fun listening -- the narrator was fantastic -- and I want to continue the series, I think....more

OH, how I have missed me some Jennifer Crusie humor! This book was fun and ridiculous and everything I expect from this author...and her writing partner, though I only read one previous book from the both of them. The only reason I'm not giving this five stars is because it's a murder mystery type thing and I found it more than a tad predictable. As in, I had the murderer pegged pretty much from the beginning. But you'd better believe I've already downloaded the other two books. Soooo happy to have more Jennifer Crusie books to look forward to!!!!!!!!...more

Will I revisit this story the same way I rewatch WHMS every autumn? Nope. Was the banter as good? Eh. Did I want to throttle the main characters pretty much throughout the whole story? Absolutely. But I felt something, at least, so it gets a bonus star for that, I guess...
ETA: You know what? I change my mind. I just remembered one of the characters taking a jab at The Princess Bride saying it was no one's favorite movie but everyone's seen it, blah, blah, blah. And since that's one of my favorite series and I usually do an annual relisten, I think that says a lot. I knew there was a third book - I already have it from the library - and I was really enjoying this second book, but I got to the end and I kind of felt like it could have been wrapped up in just the two books, especially with as LONG as these books are. I like where the characters are and I could leave them as is, except now I have to know how that one thing plays out. And since I already have the next book, I might as well....more
