The book is so different from the movie. I watched the movie years ago and loved it because it had a romance story in the thrilling "going to a different time" concept. Not time-travel but, well the science was handled very well, which I appreciate. I chose this book for my book club selection that was to be based in or about France. What better book than a book with a war between the English Lord Oliver and the French "brigand" Arnaut. The setting for the time in 1357 is the fictional Castlegard and Castle La Roque.
The characters are mostly the same in the book and movie. Chris and the professor are not related in the book and the character Francois is a student in the movie and a man of the cloth in the book. The movie glamorizes the conflict and romance between Lady Claire and Andre Marek. If you like the thrilling science fiction story the book is the way to go. If you like the romance part definitely go with the movie. Of course, Gerard Butler is Andre Marek and you can't go wrong there.

Being a book lover I count this book as horror. Not in the sense of ghosts and goblins and monsters jumping out at you but if someone comes to my doorBeing a book lover I count this book as horror. Not in the sense of ghosts and goblins and monsters jumping out at you but if someone comes to my door with the intention of burning my house down with all my books and me if I don’t leave the house, that is scary. And with the first thing that happens in the book is Montag and his fellow firemen starting a fire after piling the books on the front porch. In this world, firemen didn’t stop fires but started them. On page 32 is blasphemy; Ben Franklin is one of the first book burners. And having two atomic wars in 2022; we are so close to that time now. This book was written in 1951 and how far away 2022 must have felt like. The author didn’t get too many things wrong though. Huge tvs, ear pods that are called seashells in the book. Everyone talking to each other through the tv feeling they are being social when it’s just superficial. As an introvert, I could not handle the loudness of the wall tv and shallowness of this world. I need quiet and books. I said at first there were no monsters jumping out at you but really there is. The Hound is a mechanical “dog” that is pretty scary.
I read this for a book club selection. Since it is September and banned and challenged book month I thought reading a book about banning books was perfect. And it was. I’m so glad I read it. It was banned in some schools because of language and violence but was reinstated after people protested. Yay to those people. We need books like this. ...more

It seemed more important that the man has his thoughts than what happened to the women. This book made me mad and I didn't like it at all. Some men did bad things but they were to be forgiven and if the women couldn't or didn't want to forgive then they could leave. What the actual hell? I'm glad it was a short book and I was able to skip large portions and not miss much. ...more

Yes, there were cliches galore in this book but it was a great read so I could get over them with no problem. And yes, after getting a few clues I figured out who it was fairly early on. The story kept going at a really good pace and I didn't want to put it down. And I thought it had a pretty good ending. I always want to read more at the end just to make sure everything is fine but I guess I just have to pick up the next in the series. I will read more from Linda Castillo and more of Kate Burkholder.
Some of the cliches were run-of-the-mill; like Glock being an Arnold Schwartzenegger look-a-like. And that Mona was more energetic than the Energizer Bunny. Kate and John were cops with problems. Here is where I kept picturing Bruce Willis as the broken, somewhat alcoholic, grizzled cop and not being able to stop working the case. Ooookay. This is one of the reasons I love Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone. She's not broken down or alcoholic but she does have a thing for McDonald's Quarter Pounder with cheese meals.
I learned some things about the Amish and some German words. In fact, I started an account with Mango languages to learn the language. Guten Tag!
I wrote a bunch of notes while reading the book but I'll only talk about a few.
page 111 - "Is my brother in trouble?" he calls out. Yanking open the door, I step onto the porch."We're all in trouble," I whisper. :sunglasses on: cue The Who's 'Won't Get Fooled Again'
If you are a nerd like me you'll understand the above action.
page 112 - I'm trying to remember if dial-up was the only way to get online in the year 2009.
page 192 - And now I'm trying to remember if the computers were that bad in 2009 that everyone did so many things while the computers booted up. Go hang up their coats, get a cup of coffee, etc.
page 256 - Kate had wide hips that made his (John) male interest flare. Oh, no, not sex. Do we really need to have a sex scene?
page 275 - Kate is fuzzy on vodka and gets an attraction going for John. Oh, no, not sex. Please no.
page 276 - Ugh, it's sex. page 277 - Thank you Glock! Sex scene interrupted.
page 286-287 - Well, it happened - sex.
Anyway, the book is great. I really enjoyed it and I have many books in the series to read. Guten Abend. ...more

I thought Dark Matter was a good book. And Wayward Pines series and the Andrew Z. Thomas series. I had no idea that Blake Crouch had written an even better book. I created a new shelf just for this book to be the first on it. My "new all time favorite" shelf will be strictly for books of this caliber. I will compare all thriller and suspense books from now on to Recursion. To all the other writers of thrillers and suspense books you now have a high bar to look to.
I understand this book is being developed for a movie and tv series by none other than Shonda Rhimes for Netflix. As it should be. Please be soon, I won't be able to take it if it takes too long.
There is lots of science in the book but Blake Crouch has a way of giving you that information and not going over your head. And Barry and Helena are amazing characters. I hated for it to end but it ended perfectly.
When this book comes out June 11, 2019, run to the book store and buy it. Pre-order it and have it downloaded to you device asap. It is that good, people.
Thank you, thank you, to Netgalley and the publisher for an arc of this book. And thank you Blake Crouch, keep them coming. ...more

I also didn't know if it was true or based on real events but that is disclosed at the end of the book. Imo, I found the book a bit slow compared to the movie. The movie is a great action/adventure thriller (all of those tropes). I understood the movie more after reading the book.
I wrote down 3 notes while reading the book.
page 47 - The washbowl scene!! Oh, man, so gross!! Be forewarned.
page 194 - Title Alert!! "That is the image of the mother of the eaters of the dead..."
page 291 - "The references in the afterword are genuine. The rest of the novel...introduction, text, footnotes, and bibliography should properly be viewed as fiction."
