A really solid debut about a queer girl from an abusive home dealing with an alcoholic father and a highly religious and unaccepting mother. I really felt for Aaliyah especially in the moments where she stepped in during her father’s alcoholic episodes to take care of her little sister and keep them safe. Being the oldest and also coming from a home of addiction, those moments really resonated with me.
There sure are a lot of gay kids all in one space, but I was cool with it. I’m older, so this would have been so uncommon when I was in high school but maybe it’s more common now. Honestly, I hope it is. This was more about Aaliyah discovering herself, not only in the normal teenager way with dating fumbles and awkward encounters with friends/romantic interests, but trying to navigate all of that while also feeling lost at home.
Looking forward to future books by this author....more
I love TJ Klune, but this one was just okay for me. He recycled some elements of the relationship between HAP and Victor from the fourth book in the GI love TJ Klune, but this one was just okay for me. He recycled some elements of the relationship between HAP and Victor from the fourth book in the Green Creek series and it felt a little lazy. If you haven’t read all his books, you wouldn’t notice though. He writes beautifully and Nurse Ratched and Rambo are adorably funny and worth the read for those two characters alone. But if you haven’t read TJ before, I would still recommend Under the Whispering Door and House on the Cerulean Sea before this one....more

I’ve been waiting for a sweet wlw romcom style book for awhile and I think this one is it for me (at least for the time being). Romcom protagonists are always a bit on the insufferable side for me, but Ellie isn’t too bad and the dynamics of the other characters make up for it. Highly recommend for a sweet and light holiday read!...more

DNF @ 83%. I might have skimmed the ending, but I was listening to the audiobook. Wow, what a bummer after really enjoying Red White and Royal Blue whDNF @ 83%. I might have skimmed the ending, but I was listening to the audiobook. Wow, what a bummer after really enjoying Red White and Royal Blue where the characters were fleshed out, funny, adorable, and sexy! This one was so not that. The main girls are awful; I could not find one thing to like about either of them. The chemistry was nonexistent. Cool that at this ultra religious school all the kids seem to be queer, but other than some cool side characters, I thought this plot was a mess....more
