INTO THE ABYSS is the story of the day Swift met Santa Elena
When thirteen-year-old Swift Kent’s stepmother abandons her family for adventure on the high seas, Swift makes it her mission bring her back to save her family from starvation. But Swift learns there may be another way to help her family, one that takes her far away from everything she’s ever known.
Emily Skrutskie is six feet tall. She lives and works in Los Angeles. Skrutskie is the author of THE ABYSS SURROUNDS US series, HULLMETAL GIRLS, and the Bloodright Trilogy, starting with BONDS OF BRASS. Her latest novel, THE SALVATION GAMBIT, is now available.
Quick little intro to this world. Swift is a character I can definitely see myself loving in the duology that follows this short story. She's brave, smart and loyal. Looking forward to reading the first full novel.
Into the Abyss: it's not bad, but there's not really much to it.
I just don't think that this short story added depth to the characters that wasn't already evident in The Abyss Surrounds Us. It might fine-tune some details, but they're not necessary details. I mean, if they were important enough, they'd be in the novels, right? So, not bad, but not really substantial enough in content or purpose to be good.
Am I capable of giving anything written by Emily Skrutskie less than five stars? I guess not.
This little shor story, and I mean little (it's 18 pages long), was an absolute pleasure to read. We follow a younger Swift to get a more insight perspective into her life growing up and how she met Santa Elena and got to be part of her crew.
I love Swift. I've mentioned this in all of my reviews for this duology so I missed her tremendously. I loved getting the chance to see her at a more vulnerable state and getting a glimpse into what she might have turned into had the circumstances been different.
Objectively, this was 18 pages long so there isn't much susbtance to this story but I love this characters, I love this world, I love this plot and I love Emily's writing so much that I can't bring myself to give this anythig less than 5 stars.
Do I think it's necessary to read this to get a full picture of The Abyss Surrounds Us duology? No, I don't. But I do strongly recommend checking it out if, like me, you wished you could spend just a little longer in this ruthless world.
This is a cute little short story, but honestly most of my reaction was just 'great, and this is the prologue to the Swift backstory novel coming out... when?' It gives us a little more detail of Swift's early life, and a bit of her perspective, but only a tiny taste. I loved her love for her father and siblings, though, and seeing Santa Elena's strategic mind at work - it just didn't feel super satisfying on its own. Also, too short for me to rate - which may not make sense to anyone else, but oh well.
