It didn’t have the pov issues I felt in the first one, and even though I liked the characters in the first one, I liked these even more and felt like I got to know them better as the reader. I A sweet, Christmassy look into these characters’ lives. I love these characters and I’m always going to be happy getting a little bit more of them. I was especially happy that Kinney was at the center of a few of these stories. She’s probably the character whose story I want the most at this point, and I can only hope she gets a book one day. I do have to point something out though—Christmas Like Us was right there as a title choice!...more

This one didn’t have me tucking my feminism under the bed in shame, for starters. I liked how everything worked out here. There was a “twist” I kept expecting to drop from minute one, but I was pleasantly surprised that when it did, it wasn’t quite in the form I expected, and didn’t prove to be as much of a deus ex machina as I assumed either. I’m looking forward to book 3 even more now after how much I liked this one....more

This book was solid, but it just didn’t reach the highs for me that the first two managed. I loved Iris just as much as the protagonists from the other books, but I think Stevie I just kind of liked. I think in part this may have been because I couldn’t stand her friend group, especially after loving the friend group dynamics previously established in this series. But this was still a really good book, and I loved the way the ending brought the series full circle to where it began. Something else I appreciated was that one of the sex scenes included the use of a strap which has been woefully absent from other sapphic romances I’ve read....more

Astrid and Jordan were both such wonderful characters, both of them carrying baggage that made it all the more beautiful when they came together. A truly amazing book. This one kept up the great ensemble feeling from the first one, as well, which was something I really loved about it and was happy to see continue here....more

I liked getting Oak’s pov after the Stolen Heir was solely Wren’s, and yet disliked that as well because it was a jarring change, and it made Wren feel like a wholly different character than she did in the first book. Which could’ve been an interesting angle, except it didn’t feel like that was necessarily the goal, and it resulted in her being put on the backburner for much of the narrative. It was also much like the first book where it felt like hardly anything happened for the majority of it, right up until the last third or maybe fourth. There were also leaps of logic that took me completely out of the story, such as Oak divining who his mother’s poisoner was because Madoc knew that person’s true name. That connection made absolutely no sense to me, to the point where I thought it was a red herring, but no. At the end of the day this duology, and this book in particular, felt more like a bridging point and setup for whatever Black plans to explore in the Undersea, but I think I may be tired of Elfhame....more

Or—actually 7 for 7 if we count the Improbable Meet Cute story. I feel like every time I try to review one of her books I just say the same thing, that I’m in awe of the way she so deftly weaves serious topics and struggles into a simultaneously light-hearted romance, but it never fails to amaze me every time she does it. I also love the way this book fit into the world already established with Part of Your World and Yours Truly, with the usual nods to the Friend Zone series as well. And after marathoning these books for the last month and a half, I reach the end. A satisfying conclusion indeed. Chaol as a character started out as someone I loved, and then someone I was both very annoyed with and someone whose characterization I felt was not always quite as even as everyone else’s. So I was apprehensive, but I’m happy to say this was still a hit. 4 stars where the rest have been 5 simply because it just never quite managed to match the pace I’ve become used to with these books, part of which I feel was due to just three povs through this nearly 700 page book, while Empire of Storms had more than twice that. Perhaps a pov from one of the khaganate? Regardless, I loved getting to see what life is like on another continent, and I loved most of the new and returning characters, especially Yrene who I had loved in the Assassin’s Blade, and Sartaq....more
