It has been requested that this article or section be rewritten for the following reason(s):
This page needs a revamp in general to check for omissions, objects here listed incorrectly, and in general use more official sources as a base; in particular, needs to be better categorized.

Device (also referred to as a Puzzle or a Gimmick) refers to any interactable object in a stage that is not an enemy, item, or hazard (though variants of more common devices may be hazardous), nor is it part of the static terrain, and which cannot be picked up or collected. Common examples of devices include things like blocks, switches, and cannons. In the Kirby series, devices are a mainstay of most games (particularly those of the main series), and are often found within levels and stages themselves, usually as optional content. They are typically the building blocks of puzzle-based challenges, and interacting with them in specific ways (such as using a certain Copy Ability or activating them in a specific order) will reward the player's character in some manner. Interacting with devices in this way forms part of the core content of most Kirby titles (with the other parts mainly focused on battling enemies and exploring areas).

List of devices in the Kirby series[edit]

The following is a list of every distinct device throughout the Kirby series. The first table covers devices that span numerous games and may have a large number of variants, while the second will detail more specific devices that belong to relatively few games, if not appearing in only one game. Note that devices which appear only in Sub-Games will not be listed here:

Kirby's Adventure Kirby Star Allies Kirby Super Star, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, Kirby: Canvas Curse, Kirby Super Star Ultra, Kirby Mass Attack, Kirby: Triple Deluxe, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Kirby: Planet Robobot These extra large switches are often hidden in secret places. Pressing them refills Kirby's stamina and can also cause something elsewhere in the game to be unlocked, or make special items appear. In Dededetour! and Meta Knightmare Returns, Big Switches are used to save the game's progress. Not to be confused with smaller switches, detailed below.

Common examples include Star Blocks, Bomb Blocks, metal blocks, and elemental blocks such as Fire and Ice blocks. Each of these has a different effect or property, and different requirements to remove them. Due to the sheer number of block variants, more details should be sought out on the Block page, as they will not be listed here.

Cannons take on a wide range of looks and functions, with some acting automatically, some rotating rapidly, and others being attached to fuses. Cannons may also appear in the form of creatures such as Zebon. Cannons also serve several purposes outside of puzzles, such as in Goal Games.

This can be helpful or harmful depending on circumstances. In Kirby Super Star and its remake, there is also a variety in Milky Way Wishes called Copy Essence Deluxe, which permanently gives Kirby an ability when touched. In Kirby: Planet Robobot and Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, a variety called a Random Copy Essence cycles through a roulette similar to Mix; in the latter game, Random Copy Essences can be carried as Souvenir Items. Copy Essences are sometimes classified as items by instruction booklets.

Kirby's Dream Land Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe All main-series games, Kirby: Canvas Curse, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Kirby Mass Attack, Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition (New Challenge Stages), Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn While most of the time, doors are simply the means by which Kirby and other characters travel from one area to the next, there are many instances where doors are treated as objects that can be manipulated or used in puzzles. Examples include many of the goal doors in Kirby: Triple Deluxe and Kirby: Planet Robobot, which can be freed from enemies, attached to other devices, or even inhaled by Kirby and spat out again. These sort of interactions distinctly break the fourth wall.

Edge cases and other such objects[edit]

The following is a brief list of objects that may be considered devices under certain circumstances, but which have been omitted from the above lists, along with a brief explanation for the omission:

  • Goal Game objects - some of these make use of devices, but Goal Games are typically considered to be separate from main gameplay.
  • thin floor - can sometimes be seen as a "feature" of a stage, but is more often simply treated as part of the terrain.
  • Bumper - more often than not used as a hazard to avoid rather than a device to utilize.
  • Most obstacles in Kirby's Dream Course - typically employed as hazards rather than devices.
  • Kirby's Animal Friends - functionally speaking, the Animal Friends act like devices in a similar manner to Air Ride Machines and the Robobot Armor. However, they are treated more like characters than objects, and in some cases are independently playable.
  • Objects in Kirby's Toy Box - while many of these could qualify as devices, this set of games operates more like sub-games than main games.
  • Boost Pads and Blast Boards in Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble - these are listed under "Course Features" in the instruction booklet, but tend to act more like hazards than devices.
  • Treasure Chests - these are sometimes listed as devices in instruction booklets, but are more often treated as items.
  • Laser - this is listed as a device in the Kirby: Canvas Curse instruction booklet, but is treated as a hazard in-game.
  • Furniture - many of these can be interacted with in a similar manner to regular devices, but they are not used in main gameplay, nor are they involved in any puzzles.
  • Stomper Boot - this blurs the line somewhat between an item and a device, since Kirby rides in it rather than carrying it, but it still has the same basic properties as other items in Kirby's Return to Dream Land.
  • Key - keys are listed under "Devices" in the Kirby and the Rainbow Curse digital manual, but they act more like items in the game, and are carry items in most other Kirby games.
