Queen Sectonia

“ | Now then, hero of the lower world. You would risk your life for this land? You would stand against me, the ruler of the heavens? Very well... You will bow before the great Queen Sectonia! My beauty rivals the divine... And my power will crush all that you hold dear! | ” | — Queen Sectonia in Kirby: Triple Deluxe |
Queen Sectonia is a beauty-obsessed insectoid monarch and magician, and the primary antagonist of Kirby: Triple Deluxe, making her debut as the final boss of that game in various forms. Queen Sectonia is a power-hungry and half-crazed tyrant who sought to subjugate all of Floralia after gazing for too long into a certain mirror. She first appears in-game after Kirby beats Taranza, who was the queen's loyal servant, and Masked Dedede, who Taranza had been puppeteering. After she is defeated in battle, she combines with the Dreamstalk for her second phase. In The True Arena, this form is replaced with Soul of Sectonia, who has an additional phase.
Though only making a proper appearance in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, Queen Sectonia has made multiple cameo appearances in later Kirby games, though due to her presumed death, none have her physically appear.
CharacteristicsEdit
Queen Sectonia used to more closely resemble Taranza, but used magic to change her appearance to that of a large, lavishly decorated wasp.[1] She bears a primarily blue and yellow-striped face and body, with a pink heart on her thorax. Her size and color scheme reflect the characteristics of the female Joro spider. The Joro spider is associated with the myth of the jorōgumo, a female arachnid yōkai that can shapeshift into a beautiful woman; this likely served as a major source of inspiration for Queen Sectonia, who once resembled a spider and transformed into a more beautiful appearance. Her design might also be a reference to the "wasp waist", a fashion trend that consisted of narrowing the waist through the use of corsets and girdle, named after a petiole (a two-segmented body joined by a thin abdoment) characteristic to wasps.
Queen Sectonia bears four golden semi-translucent wings, a wide regal crest, and a gaudy gem-encrusted crown. She wields two magical staves; the left one is silver and has a green crystal, while the right one is gold and has a magenta crystal. She carries these with two disembodied gloved hands. Queen Sectonia has no trouble flying, and typically hovers off the ground. She is also capable of teleporting short distances, leaving blurry disorienting images of herself as she does so. As Queen Sectonia DX, her design bears a pink and red color scheme with spiked magenta wings. Her overall appearance has more pointed edges, as well.
Queen Sectonia is vain and power-hungry, and she believes that her beauty makes her equivalent to the divine. She has a bit of a shallow demeanor, with no obvious goal other than amassing more power. She also has a bad habit of cackling incessantly when she fights. Despite this, she has the combat skills to back up her boasting, as she is well-trained in both swordplay and sorcery. According to the flavor text for Sectonia Vine and Soul of Sectonia, her species survives by leeching upon other lifeforms until they are weak enough to be controlled, and she has fed off of countless hosts to the point of forgetting her original form. As shown by her actions toward Taranza, she is no longer of sound mind and will even attack those who are near to her. At this point, it becomes clear to Taranza that she is no longer the person she once was. This becomes especially true when Sectonia is beaten by Kirby after their first engagement, and resorts to merging with the Dreamstalk in order to indiscriminately drain the life out of the entire world and all its inhabitants.
BackstoryEdit
Long before the events of Kirby: Triple Deluxe, Sectonia and Taranza were once good friends who lived on the highest island of Floralia, Royal Road, alongside the People of the Sky. Even at this early stage, Sectonia's vanity and desire for power were both apparent and steadily growing.[2] At some point, Taranza stole the Dimension Mirror and gifted it to the beauty-obsessed queen. Both of them unaware of its power, the mirror's influence caused Sectonia to become even more self-obsessed, ultimately turning her heart toward tyranny.[3] Sectonia abandoned the idea of coexisting peacefully with the People of the Sky, and began a campaign to control all of Floralia—and eventually Popstar as well. To this end, she created Warp Holes that allowed for quick travel between the islands.[4] In her desire for power and beauty, she used magic to change her body, demonstrating that even her true form mattered less to her than her image.[1] Suffering under the queen's cruelty, the People of the Sky tried to call for help by sending a seed down to the world below, which bloomed into the Dreamstalk.[5] Sectonia noticed this, imprisoned the People of the Sky within Royal Road, and ordered Taranza to foil their plan by pre-emptively kidnapping "the hero of Dream Land".[6][7] It is from here that the main story of Kirby: Triple Deluxe unfolds.

Kirby: Triple DeluxeEdit
“ | Sectonia and Taranza were once good friends, but Sectonia became obsessed with vanity and delusions of grandeur. It wasn't long before her heart went evil, turning her into the power-hungry monarch she is today. | ” | — VS Queen Sectonia DX, Special Page in Kirby: Triple Deluxe |
In Kirby: Triple Deluxe, Queen Sectonia's visage is seen all over Royal Road, but she does not make her physical appearance until Kirby defeats Taranza and Masked Dedede in Royal Road - Stage 6. Taranza calls for her assistance after he realizes that King Dedede was not the hero of Dream Land he meant to capture. Angered by his failure, the queen swats Taranza aside, then proceeds to confirm Kirby's identity as the hero of Dream Land. After a somewhat lengthy and convoluted speech about obtaining ultimate power and beauty, she does battle with Kirby directly. However, even given her magical potency, she falls to the pink warrior.
In a last-ditch attempt to defeat Kirby, Sectonia merges with the Dreamstalk. She nearly defeats Kirby in this form, but King Dedede and Taranza (after a change of heart) team up to save him. At the end of the fight, Kirby assumes his Hypernova form and destroys the flowered Queen Sectonia by blasting her with her own power beam, thus freeing the Kingdom of Floralia.
In The True Arena, Queen Sectonia uses the last of her strength to consume four Miracle Fruits, transforming into Soul of Sectonia. She then fights Kirby one more time, with strengthened power and new attacks.
Queen Sectonia also appears in sprite form as a collectible keychain. Hers is only awarded once all the Sun Stones have been collected.

“ | The evil queen who bewitched Taranza is motivated by beauty and world domination. She seized control of Floralia and oppressed the People of the Sky with her cruelty. It's time to face the true mastermind behind the curtain! | ” | — VS Queen Sectonia, Special Page in Kirby: Triple Deluxe |
Queen Sectonia fights with a pair of staves. She can cast spells with these staves and transform them into rapiers for melee combat. She also teleports constantly between attacks, similar to Nightmare, Marx and Magolor.
The following attack names are taken from Japanese guidebooks.
Phase 1Edit
In Phase 1, Queen Sectonia fights in the hall of her palace.
Queen Sectonia attacks in a fixed order on loop in Story Mode and The Arena as follows:
Attacks - Phase 1 | |
---|---|
Attack | Description |
シルバーロッドショット Silver Rod Shot |
Sectonia fires 3 purple orbs from her left rod aimed at Kirby. Each orb leaves a Dropped Star on impact. |
突進 Rush |
Sectonia transforms her rods into dual rapiers. She will then perform a left slash, a right slash, and finish with a thrust. Each of the first two slashes leaves a star that disappears quickly. The final thrust leaves a star in front of her and 3 stars on her path. |
電撃 Lightning Strike |
Sectonia fires black lightning bolts from her right rod in the bottom three directions. She will perform this continuously in four locations: center, one side of the stage, the other side of the stage, and back to center. The final round leaves 3 stars. |
飛来攻撃 Flying Attack |
Sectonia transforms her rods into dual rapiers. She will then fly to the other planes of the stage and perform a cross slash aimed at Kirby twice. Each slash leaves a star. |
連続突き攻撃 Continuous Thrust Attack |
Sectonia transforms her rods into dual rapiers. She will then thrust her rapiers rapidly and finish with a cross slash that leaves two stars. |
ブライトネスリング Brightness Ring |
Sectonia teleports to the background and summons a spinning ring around her waist. First, she tries to cut Kirby with her ring by moving toward him, which can be avoided by ducking at either corner of the floor. Then, she flies back to the background and throws 3 much bigger rings at Kirby's vertical position. Interestingly, while King Dedede is lying unconscious in the hall during Story Mode, he avoids the attack by lowering his body. |
Phase 2Edit
This phase commences when Queen Sectonia has lost one-third of her health; she will summon the Queen's Jewel (クィンズ・ジュエル) and forcefully throw Kirby onto the jewel as the battlefield. This area is smaller than the initial playing field and has gaps on either side, so Kirby must be careful not to fall into the bottomless pits.
Attacks - Phase 2 | |
---|---|
Attack | Description |
リングショット Ring Shot |
Sectonia summons multiple rounds of small rings to throw at Kirby. The first two sets have her throw one ring on each side, while the final set has her throw three rings on each side, each leaving a Dropped Star on impact. |
バグズ召喚 Bugs Summon |
Sectonia summons several Antlers and disappears from the stage. Sectonia won't come back until all the summoned Antlers are defeated. |
電撃 Lightning Strike |
Sectonia fires black lightning bolts from her right rod. Her first and third sets have the electric bolts sweep the stage from either left-to-right or right-to-left, while her second set has her zap the center of the stage. In-between sets, she will move around sporadically to get in position for her next set. |
連続突き攻撃 Continuous Thrust Attack |
Sectonia transforms her rods into dual rapiers. She will then thrust her rapiers rapidly and finish with a cross slash that leaves 2 stars. |
突進 Rush |
Sectonia transforms her rods into dual rapiers. She will then perform a left slash, a right slash, and finish with a thrust. Each of the first two slashes leaves a star that disappears quickly. The final thrust leaves a star in front of her and 3 stars on her path. |
飛来攻撃 Flying Attack |
Sectonia transforms her rods into dual rapiers. She will then fly to the other planes of the stage and perform a cross slash aimed at Kirby twice. Each slash leaves a star. |
In Story Mode and The Arena, Queen Sectonia always begins the second phase with this attack:
- Ring Shot
After that, she then attacks in a fixed order on loop as follows:
- Bugs Summon (2 Red Antlers)
- Lightning Strike
- Continuous Thrust Attack
- Bugs Summon (4 White Antlers)
- Rush
- Ring Shot
- Bugs Summon (3 Green Antlers)
- Flying Attack
Phase 3Edit
This phase begins when Queen Sectonia has lost three-quarters of her health; at this point, she will destroy the Queen's Jewel with her rods. If Kirby is hit while Sectonia is smashing the stage, he will take damage and his current Copy Ability will be lost. Kirby must dodge her attack if he wishes to escape unscathed, though simply standing out of the way will suffice. Then, Kirby is thrown back to the hall for the final phase of the battle.
Attacks - Phase 3 | |
---|---|
Attack | Description |
テレポート攻撃 Teleport Attack |
Sectonia teleports several times to create illusions. Then, she appears from behind Kirby, covers her rapiers with purple aura and performs a quick slash, before repeating three more times. The final slash leaves 2 stars. |
バグズ召喚 Bugs Summon |
Sectonia summons several Antlers. This time, she will not wait for their defeat and can damage or even destroy her summoned minions with her own attacks. The Antlers will walk off the stage if luckily not destroyed by Sectonia. The kinds of Antlers summoned are in a fixed order as follows: five white Antlers, three red Antlers and four green Antlers. |
ブライトネスリング Brightness Ring |
Sectonia teleports to the background and throws three big rings at Kirby's vertical position. Interestingly, while King Dedede is lying unconscious in the hall during Story Mode, he avoids the attack by lowering his body. |
シルバーロッドショット Silver Rod Shot |
Sectonia fires five purple orbs from her left rod aimed at Kirby. Each orb leaves a Dropped Star on impact. |
電撃 Lightning Strike |
Sectonia fires black lightning bolts from her right rod which sweeps across the stage from left-to-right or right-to-left. |
飛来攻撃 Flying Attack |
Sectonia transforms her rods into dual rapiers. She will then fly to the other planes of the stage and perform a cross slash aimed at Kirby twice. Each slash leaves a star. |
In Story Mode and The Arena, Queen Sectonia attacks in a fixed order on loop as follows:
- Teleport Attack
- Bugs Summon
- Any of the following (Sectonia will always perform one of these and will perform a second one if the summoned Antlers are still alive):
- Brightness Ring
- Silver Rod Shot
- Flying Attack
- Lightning Strike (sweeps across the stage like in Phase 2)
Queen Sectonia DXEdit
In Dededetour! and The True Arena, Queen Sectonia will appear in her DX form, which bears a red-pink-purple color scheme with her crown becoming green-golden. Her wings gain edges and become pink.
Queen Sectonia DX will use a stronger version of attacks in a different order than her normal counterpart:
Attacks | |
---|---|
Attack | Description |
突進 Rush |
Sectonia DX transforms her rods into dual rapiers. She will then perform a left slash, a right slash, and finish with a thrust, that either goes straight forward or aims diagonally. Each of the first two slashes leaves a star that disappears quickly. The final thrust leaves a star in front of her and 3-4 stars on her path. |
ブライトネスリング Brightness Ring |
Sectonia DX teleports to the background and summons a spinning ring around her waist. First, she tries to cut Kirby or Dedede with her ring by moving toward him, which can be avoided by ducking at either corner of the floor. Then, she flies back to the background and throws 3 much bigger rings aimed at Kirby's or Dedede's current vertical location. She then throws two rings, one to the top and one to the bottom, to finish the attack. In phase 3, only the background attack is used. |
飛来攻撃 Flying Attack |
Sectonia DX transforms her rods into dual rapiers. She will then fly to the other planes of the stage and perform a cross slash aimed at Kirby or Dedede four times. The final slash leaves a star. |
電撃 Lightning Strike |
Sectonia DX fires black lightning bolts from her right rod in the bottom three directions. She will perform this continuously in four locations: center, one side of the stage, the other side of the stage, and back to center. The final round is much bigger and leaves 3 stars. In phase two, she may fire across the stage from either the foreground or on the same plane as Kirby/King Dedede. |
連続突き攻撃 Continuous Thrust Attack |
Sectonia DX transforms her rods into dual rapiers. She will then thrust her rapiers rapidly and finish with a cross slash that leaves 2 stars. She will travel back and forth during this attack. |

Kirby: Planet RobobotEdit
A sticker of Queen Sectonia appears in Kirby: Planet Robobot. Here, it is a unique sticker that can only be found in Gigabyte Grounds - Stage 7 EX.
Additionally, a clone of Sectonia appears in the Meta Knightmare Returns Sub-Game. This clone is the second of three Bosses which Star Dream uses to test its new admin. When Sectonia Clone is defeated, she will show her original form (a Taranza-esque character with minor differences in appearance) and explode afterwards.
Kirby Battle RoyaleEdit
A mask based upon Sectonia's design appears as unlockable Headgear for the Spear ability in Kirby Battle Royale. The spear itself is replaced with one of her rods. It is unlocked after collecting 3000 Battle Coins.
Kirby Star AlliesEdit
One of the Stone transformations in Kirby Star Allies depicts both Taranza and the aforementioned Taranza-esque character. This form is presumably Sectonia before jumping bodies. A black version of Queen Sectonia also makes an appearance when Taranza uses one of his moves, Queen's Phantom, where she blasts the stage with lightning. Taranza also appears sad when he uses this move, possibly due to her death. This model is the exact same as her appearance in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, only with higher-quality textures.[9] She also makes cameo appearances in the Celebration Pictures "A Miracle Sent to the Skies", "Rockabilly And Blues" and "Bad Boss Brothers".
Super Kirby ClashEdit

Kirby Fighters 2Edit
A Rare Outfit for Parasol Kirby (called the Sectonian Queen's Parasol) is based on her. It is one of the last Rare Outfits unlocked in the game, becoming available at Fighters Rank 94.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land DeluxeEdit
In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, there are two Dress-Up Masks based on Queen Sectonia - one for her main form and another for her original, Taranza-esque form (known as "Old Friend"). The first one is unlocked by completing card #44 in the Stamp Rally, while the "Old Friend" mask is unlocked by completing 60 missions in Merry Magoland.
Super Smash Bros. UltimateEdit
A primary spirit is devoted to Queen Sectonia in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. She is ★★★, grab-type, and carries two support slots. She can only be obtained by summoning her with the spirits or cores of Zinger and Princess Shroob.
In the Kirby novel seriesEdit
In the Kirby novel series, Queen Sectonia is mentioned throughout Kirby: Save the Rainbow Islands!. Pirika looks up to Queen Sectonia and wishes for similar power and admiration from others. Pirika visits Floralia because she wants to see the castle where she once lived. Taranza, who hears Pirika's admiration for Sectonia, explains her story. After hearing from Pirika that she wants to be like Sectonia, Taranza tells her to move on since nobody can be like her and tries to persuade her against it, which doesn't work.
By the end of the story, Pirika tells Kirby and his friends about her ambition to be like Queen Sectonia, not knowing that she was defeated by Kirby himself. Taranza is also reminisce of her and her downfall after finding a Dreamstalk fruit. He wishes that Pirika will never become like Queen Sectonia, so she won't meet the same fate as her. When he plants the seed he is hopeful that one day, he will meet Sectonia again.
MusicEdit
- Main article: Sullied Grace
Queen Sectonia's battle theme is "Sullied Grace". This track features organ (in both sections) and electric guitar (in section 2, which is looped for the rest of the track in gameplay).

TriviaEdit
- The parallels between Sectonia's original spider-like appearance, and her shapeshifting into a form resembling that of a Joro spider, suggest a connection to the mythical jorōgumo. Her resemblance to a Joro spider has been officially acknowledged at least once: one potential CPU nickname in Kirby's Dream Buffet is "Q.Joronia" (in Japanese, タランザ&ジョロニア Taranza and Joronia).
- Sectonia's name is derived from "insect" and "near", to suggest that she is almost an insect, but not quite.[10]
