Pre-Apocalypse[]
Before the outbreak, machetes had many uses, including in combat.
Post-Apocalypse[]
Following the onset of the outbreak, machetes became the favored weapons of several survivors due to their high level of effectiveness against the undead.
Original TV Series[]
While clearing out the West Georgia Correctional Facility, Rick Grimes utilized a machete. Following two attempts by Tomas to kill him, Rick killed Tomas by driving his machete into the man's head.
A red-handled machete was recovered by a young man from a hardware store while fleeing walkers and passed through a number of hands, eventually ending up with the Claimers. After Rick killed the Claimers' leader Joe, he took possession of the Red Machete for himself, ultimately using it to brutally kill Gareth. The machete was stolen by the Saviors with one taking it and fleeing though he was killed in the process. The Red Machete later ended up back in the hands of Mandy, a previous owner, who left it sticking in the grave of her father and sister.
Nearly a decade after the outbreak's onset, a machete was used by Alpha to execute the victims of the trade fair massacre. After capturing Daryl Dixon who was not yet aware of her actions, Alpha tauntingly showed him the bloody weapon.
A machete was also favored by Mercer who used it to take out an entire herd and save two Commonwealth soldiers out on patrol. It is a common weapon carried by the Commonwealth Army.
After escaping from captivity, Rosita manages to grab a zombified Commonwealth soldier's machete and put him down with his own weapon. Gabriel subsequently keeps the machete while Rosita hangs onto the soldier's pistol instead.
Fear the Walking Dead[]
Machetes are used by the Broke Jaw Ranch militiamen including during the defense of the ranch against a massive herd.
After Jake Otto gets bitten, Nicholas Clark uses Jake's machete to amputate his arm in an attempt to save Jake's life. However, Jake ultimately dies, turns and has to be put down.
12 years later, Troy Otto uses a machete to chop off walkers left arms before releasing them in an effort to keep Madison Clark from finding her daughter. After seeing Troy with the blade and the armless walkers, Madison realizes what Troy did.
The Ones Who Live[]
In the woods near Alexandria, Gabriel uses a machete to dispatch a walker as he spots CRM helicopters flying overhead.
In Wyoming, Rick and Michonne Grimes encounter a walker with a partially split open head and a machete sticking out of its left shoulder. After putting down the walker, Rick takes the machete, and they use it to chop away the vines blocking a soda machine.
Rick later tries to put a walker down with the machete in Yellowstone National Park, only to discover that it has calcified skin, causing the blade to bounce right off.
While making a deal with Jadis, Rick puts down his machete as a part of disarming himself. When walkers attack Jadis, Rick retrieves the weapon and uses it to put down a zombified Dalton.
Rick and Michonne lay the machete amongst their other weapons as they spend the night together before going after the CRM. The machete is presumably abandoned along with Michonne's makeshift spear before the couple returns to Cascadia Forward Operating Base as neither weapon is ever seen again.
Webisodes[]
Shortly after the outbreak began, Harris was armed with a machete while traveling with Chase. Harris was eventually killed and reanimated, but Chase recovered the machete after putting his friend down. Kelly subsequently used it to kill B.J.
Novel Series[]
Spencer-Lee Dryden carries a machete which he drops into the pit where he has trapped the Woodburians when Tommy Dupree kills the man.
After Spencer-Lee reanimates and falls into the pit, David Stern attempts to find the weapon which is lost in the chaos. Bethany Dupree grabs the machete and uses it to put Spencer-Lee down, but not before he bites Lilly Caul. It is subsequently used by Tommy to amputate Lilly's left foot and then by Ashley Duart to put down the walkers that fall into the pit.
Destinies[]
Machetes are one of the weapons that Rick and Shane's Group can use against both the undead and the living.
After defeating the Woodbury leader in combat, Rick/Shane uses a machete to decapitate him.
