~ MX's Pokédex entry |
MX is the secondary antagonist of the Friday Night Funkin' mod, Mario's Madness, specifically serving as the main antagonist of Powerdown and Demise.
Much like in his original appearance in Mario '85, he is an ancient spirit-like demonic who inhabited a copy of Super Mario Bros. and disguised himself as a monstrous eyeless version of Mario himself in order to lure unsuspecting players/victims into the game and play with for all eternity. He is Lucas' arch-nemesis, his first and only victim, of whom he killed and pulled his soul into his digital hellish dimension, forcing him into the body of Luigi. He is also the final opponent faced in Hellish Heights.
In the original release of the mod, he was voiced by KINGF0X, who also voiced Mr. Virtual and Mr. L. In the V2 update, he is voiced by Sunset, who also voices MX in the Mario '85 game series.
Appearance[]
During Powerdown, MX is in his False Hero form, being more like Mario with the colors of the '85 sprites, his cap covers his sockets and his mustache is tousled. In his true form MX appears as a larger, paler version of Mario with black eyes, a larger mustache, and dark red-and-black clothing.
In the Legacy version of Powerdown, unlike his original appearance, where his shirt was black and his overalls were dark red, here his shirt is dark red while his overalls are black. He also gains small white pupils in his left and right poses. He also has gloves, which the original MX doesn't have. (This was a simple mistake on the team's part but was kept because it "Looked Cool")
In Pasta Night, MX has the exact same appearance as his default form in the original Mario 85’ game and is seen with a cigarette in his mouth.
Personality[]
Like in his original appearance in Mario '85, MX is extremely ruthless when trying to kill his victims, as shown through his mechanic of stomping the ground in order to kill Boyfriend. Adding more fuel to the fire, he killed a random Toad by dissecting them, decapitated Lucas, an eight year old boy, and impaled his head on a pike, and later brutally murdered Girlfriend by ripping her apart with his bare hands. He's also very strategic and manipulative, as he initially tried to gain Boyfriend and Girlfriend's trust by disguising himself as the actual Mario character, only ditching the ruse once he realized they weren't buying the act.
MX also appears to be a very apathetic individual, as demonstrated by how his murder of Girlfriend brought Boyfriend to the verge of tears and his only response to the latter hatefully glaring at him was telling him to run before immediately going after the singer. Multiple times throughout the chase does MX continuously laugh at Boyfriend's misfortune and taunt him, further highlighting his sadism and lack of remorse.
Despite this, MX is capable of socializing with those he considers to be his peers, as shown through a game of UNO he plays with Lord X and Hypno. Furthermore, when addressing the many opponents in V1 of Mario's Madness, he specifically refers to them as “[his] friends”, in addition to understanding Red Mist Squidward's frustrations. Additionally, when he isn't killing he adopts Mario's mannerisms around others.
Story[]
Background[]
While MX's origins are mostly unknown, the Pokédex in Friday Night Funkin' Lullaby calls refers to him as "The Malicious AI", which refers to his original interpretation as a demon composed of game data. During the year of 1985, the game he inhabits, a copy of Super Mario Bros. was gifted to an eight-year-old boy named Lucas S. Everett as a birthday present from his uncle, Mark. MX would eventually make him suffer a seizure from his television, resulting in his death. He would then proceed to drag the boy's soul into the game, throw him into the vessel of Luigi, and give him infinite lives just so he could repeatedly kill him. After an unknown amount of time, MX halted his torture on Lucas after decapitating his head and leaving it on a pike in the ground. It hasn't been confirmed as to why he suddenly stopped with his torment, though it's possible that he simply got bored of it overtime.
Powerdown[]
Following his encounter with Mr. Virtual, Boyfriend entered the next level titled Powerdown inside a castle. He would then encounter a deformed Mario and, as per usual, he challenged him to sing while Girlfriend looked on in suspiciousness. Once he realized the two weren't buying the act, MX ditched the disguise and revealed his true and the corpses of Lucas and a random Toad as he continued to sing with Boyfriend. As time went on and it became apparent that the rapper wasn't scared of him regardless, the digital entity took things a step further by grabbing Girlfriend and ripping her in half with his own bare hands, telling a now equally terrified and heartbroken Boyfriend that his innocence wouldn't get him far.
Demise[]
Devastated by his girlfriend's death, Boyfriend hatefully stares at MX with tears in his eyes, whose sole response is a callous laugh before telling him to run. The two would then embark on a run throughout his domain, with MX hot on Boyfriend's trail. Eventually, MX started catching up to him, only to end up falling down a pit while Boyfriend was caught by Girlfriend, having been resurrected (much to MX's anger and disappointment). Just as it seems they were in the clear, MX proceeded to jump out of the pit to resume his chase, resulting in Girlfriend dropping her date and flying ahead out of fear. Thankfully, Boyfriend was able to stay ahead of him throughout the remainder of the song and escapes through a warp pipe.
Pasta Night[]
One night, MX and his two friends (Lord X and Hypno) go out to a bar and decide to play a game of UNO, where Hypno and MX try to cheat to win, but in the end, Lord X was the winner.[1]

Trivia[]
- In the background of Powerdown, a Luigi head can be seen impaled on a spike. This is a nod to the game over screen of "Mario '85", and also means that here in Mario's Madness, MX managed to permanently kill Lucas. It's been confirmed in Lucas' ref sheet that permanently dying in-game won't set his soul free, basically meaning that he's present within the song Powerdown but unable to move or interact with anyone.
- He is one of the few opponents in the mod to have a health mechanic. In this case, it's his stomping mechanic with the POW Block.
- His left pose references Mario's skidding sprite.
- MX's shirt and overalls color palettes being swapped was accidental, but Marco Antonio kept it since he thought it looked cool. The creator of MX, FrazzDude (formerly known as Mari0_Bot), has expressed interest in the design and believes this is what MX would look like if he was more based off of the modern-day Mario design.
- MX was the hardest character Marco Antonio had to draw in the mod.
- This version of MX appears in V2 of Friday Night Funkin' Lullaby alongside his best friend, Lord X.
- MX became friends with Red Mist Squidward after meeting him through Lord X, as the two have in common the desire to kill people and MX understands Squidward's frustrations.
- MX in the mod abides by the lore and design he was given when he was first made. An example being that he lacks gloves and is referred to as "The Malicious AI" in Friday Night Funkin' Lullaby even when Inferno_Plumber stated that he was an entity as old as time itself and gave him gloves when he got ownership of the character. Furthermore when FrazzDude received ownership back, MX's design was made to look somewhat more lanky (but now lacking gloves again), whereas he still maintains a rather blocky structure in the mod as shown via teasers and promotional art for V2.
- FrazzDude has stated that Mario Madness is the official Mario 85' Friday Night Funkin' mod.
- In the Vs. Sonic.EXE mod, there were plans to put MX as part of the Misfits pack. However, it was discarded.
