The Tasmanian Devil, (real name: Taz), is one of the main antagonists of the Looney Tunes franchise, as well as the main protagonist of the spin-off series Taz-Mania, and one of the two main protagonists (alongside Quinn) of the 2023 direct-to-video animated film Taz: Quest for Burger.
He is a ravenous, gluttonous Tasmanian Devil who serves as a recurring enemy to Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck.
Portrayals
He was voiced by Mel Blanc from 1954 until his death in 1989. Since then, he has been voiced by multiple actors, including Jim Cummings (since 1991) and Fred Tatasciore (since 2020). He was also voiced by Ian James Corlett in the 2002 series Baby Looney Tunes, Brendan Fraser in the 2003 movie Looney Tunes: Back in Action, and Steve Blum in the 2023 film Taz: Quest for Burger.
Appearance
Taz is a big brown Tasmanian Devil who used to live on the island of Tasmania, off the coast of Australia. He has fur on his head made to look like horns and several rows of sharp teeth, making him one of Bugs Bunny's more dangerous enemies.
Biography
Taz tends to growl, spit, and gibber rather than speak although he can talk, and travels by spinning around like a tornado. He has a seemingly endless appetite and will eat almost anything, which often leads to his defeat.
He is so popular despite his few appearances that he got his own TV series with only occasional appearances by the other Looney Tunes cast, and is one of the most recognizable characters.
He appears in the short Ducking the Devil trying to eat Daffy after escaping the zoo. This was his only appearance in a Daffy Duck cartoon.
In his show Taz-Mania, Taz has parents, a younger sister and brother.
In The Looney Tunes Show, Taz is a wild animal who was captured so he could be in a zoo. One of the people who captured him told the local zookeeper, Pete Puma, that if he values his life he should never ever unlock the cage. Pete agrees to this and soon after the man started driving away, Pete snatches the lock and runs after the man proclaiming that he forgot his lock. This leaves Taz to escape and he proceeds to Bugs and Daffy's house. When Bugs and Daffy go to see if he possibly belongs to Granny, Taz runs into Sylvester and Tweety and tries to eat them. They soon escape and Speedy helps Bugs train Taz to be a really better pet.
In the 2001 webtoon trilogy Planet of the Taz, his species was ruled by Dr. Zarius, a Tasmanian devil scientist.
Other Media
MultiVersus
Taz appears as a playable character in the "platform fighter" video game MultiVersus, appearing as a bruiser-type character. In the game, he is voiced by Jim Cummings.
In game, Taz has a very aggressive playstyle, which his attacks primarily themed around setting up his unique status effect, "Tasty". A status effect that is set up using Taz's grounded neutral attack (Soup's On!, where Taz guzzles a pot of soup before spitting it out towards opponents), grounded side attack (Well-Seasoned, where Taz seasons his opponent with salt and pepper before briefly shifting into his spin), grounded up attack (Slam-wich, where Taz slams two halves of a sandwich above him) and sometimes his down special (You Spit What You Eat, where Taz spits out an apple core, or any projectiles he eats with his neutral special), should enough hits be delivered to an opponent, they will gain the "Cooked Chicken" debuff, turning them into a rotisserie chicken that is unable to attack and drops healing pieces of chicken upon being hit for a short amount of time. Beyond this, most of Taz's attacks showcase his outwardly physical nature, with other attacks including a physical stomp, biting opponents (and even swallowing them in his neutral special, Chew it Yourself, which can also store eaten projectiles), claw swipes, shifting into his tornado form (partially in his downward aerial attack, fully in his side special, Taz-nado), and creating "fight clouds" with his up special (Dogpile! Dogpile!). Taz can also slightly heal allies he walks by through licking them, and his signature perks are Iron Stomach (which replaces swallowed projectiles with an anvil) and I Gotta Get In There! (in which Taz's allies can jump into the fight cloud made by Taz's Dogpile! Dogpile! to boost its damage, knockback, duration, and defensive capabilities).
