NOTE:This article uses information derived from Mikael Mikaelson on The Vampire Diaries Wiki.

Villain Overview

Mikael Mikaelson is a supporting antagonists in the Vampire Diaries franchise. He was a major antagonist in The Vampire Diaries, being the supporting antagonist in season 3. He later served as a supporting antagonist in The Originals, serving as an overarching antagonist in season 1 and a supporting antagonist in season 2. He is a vampire hunter and the father of the original family whose sole purpose is to hunt down his bastard son, Klaus Mikaelson.

He is played by Sebastian Roche as an adult and as a young man by actor Isaiah Stratton.

Personality[]

As Human[]

Prior to the death of his wife Freya, Mikael was described as a kind and loving husband and father. However, after her death, he became hostile and distant, consumed by grief over the loss of his favorite child. While Klaus' birth brought some hope back to Mikael, he was never the same person again. He became calculating, aggressive, bad-tempered, and prideful, earning the description of "being a dick" from Hayley.

As a human, Mikael was characterized by his pride, valor, and devotion to family. However, he also used fear to control people, especially his children, in an attempt to make them stronger. This led to his children becoming alienated from him. Mikael harbored a deep hatred for Klaus, stemming from the accidental death of Henrik, Esther's murder (even though Mikael indirectly caused it), and Klaus turning the family against him. Mikael physically abused Klaus throughout his childhood, justifying it as a way to make him stronger.

Despite his mistreatment of Klaus, Mikael still cared for him enough to save his life by turning him into a vampire, along with his other half-siblings. However, Mikael's treatment of Klaus ultimately turned him against his stepfather, leading Klaus to despise him, especially after discovering they were not biologically related. Mikael failed to acknowledge his mistakes as a parent, causing his children, such as Elijah, Kol, and Rebekah, to grow to despise him and turn their backs on him, primarily because of how he treated Klaus.

As a Original Vampire[]

After being turned into a vampire, Mikael's valor turned into anger and obsession. Initially, he didn't want to kill Klaus, choosing instead to have his wife curse Klaus to suppress his werewolf side and make him an Original Vampire like the rest of his siblings. However, when Klaus murdered Esther and blamed Mikael for it, he began pursuing Klaus with the intent to kill him.

For a thousand years, Mikael tried to destroy Klaus but still loved his biological family during this time. He expressed that his target was Klaus alone and not his other children. Mikael was willing to harm and kill others in his hunt for Klaus, showing sadistic traits. However, he also had a sense of regret for bringing the vampire race into existence and fed exclusively on other vampires instead of humans.

Mikael exhibited cruelty and sadism, particularly towards Klaus. He wanted to humiliate and psychologically torture Klaus before killing him, planning to erase everyone's memory of Klaus, leaving him utterly alone. Klaus described Mikael as a psychopath driven by madness rather than simply wanting to kill him.

Mikael was hypocritical in blaming Klaus for turning their children against him when his own actions contributed to it. Rebekah confronted him, stating that he destroyed the family by turning them into vampires, and Klaus had nothing to do with it. Mikael's actions caused a rift in the family, leading them to turn against him.

Despite his ruthless nature, Mikael had some moral boundaries. He regretted his role in creating vampires and avoided killing innocents by feeding only on other vampires. He also respected those who showed strength and courage, acknowledging individuals like Davina and Camille. Mikael concealed his emotions and positive traits behind anger but was visibly moved when reunited with his long-lost daughter, Freya, embracing her and shedding tears.

After his resurrection, Mikael's personality underwent a significant change. He became less patient, more aggressive, and had a more hostile demeanor when interacting with others. Previously, Mikael was patient, calculating, and amiable towards vampires like Damon. He adamantly refused to feed on human blood, even to save himself from desiccation. However, after his resurrection, Mikael became more willing to feed on humans, albeit with some reluctance. He also showed a willingness to feed on werewolf blood.

His diminished moral compass could be attributed to his increased desperation to kill Klaus. Immediately after his resurrection, Mikael sought out Klaus, even in a weakened state from werewolf venom and later Papa Tunde's blade. This contrasts with his previous patience and strategic thinking.

Prior to his death, Mikael still had affection for his family, despite their animosity towards him. He was pleased to see Rebekah again and showed amusement at her mischievous nature. Mikael fought fiercely to protect Freya, demonstrating his love and approval for her. This protective instinct empowered him to fight through his desiccation and land a hit on Dahlia.

When questioned by Klaus about his hatred towards him during his upbringing, Mikael claimed not to know the reason. In his dying moments, Mikael reached out for Klaus, indicating his care for him. Klaus, in turn, transformed into a brutal and obsessive Original Vampire, mirroring some of Mikael's traits. Despite their tumultuous relationship, Mikael expressed regret for how he abused Klaus when faced with his imminent execution by Klaus.

Overall, Mikael's resurrection altered his personality, making him more aggressive and less morally restrained. However, he still harbored affection for his family and demonstrated regret for his past actions towards Klaus.

As a Ghost[]

Even in death, Mikael's desire to torment and kill Klaus persisted. Prior to his resurrection, Mikael had formed a conspiracy with a young witch, promising her assistance in saving her friend and eliminating Klaus permanently in exchange for bringing him back to life. Once resurrected, Mikael made immediate attempts to kill Klaus, disregarding the potential collateral damage that would result in the deaths of Marcel and Josh. However, Davina, the young witch, opposed this outcome and sought to prevent it.

Powers and abilities[]

Original Vampire

As the first Original Vampire ever created, Mikael was the most powerful and dangerous character in the Vampire Diaries universe, before his final death, and before his step-granddaughter Hope Mikaelson became the world’s first tribrid. Mikael has overpowered practically everyone he has ever fought at least one time in the series, including his son Klaus who is the world’s first hybrid. He is also stronger than an Enhanced Original Vampire like Alaric Saltzman, and an Upgraded Original Vampire like Marcel Gerard, albeit, just barely. Although probably not as strong as Lucien Castle when he was an Upgraded Original, due to Lucien and Mikael being close to the same age. However, even though Mikael is the strongest Vampire to ever walk the earth, Klaus’ hybrid powers continue to grow stronger as he ages. Because of this, Klaus has successfully overpowered him on a few occasions without having to use his full power.

  • Superhuman strength: Mikael possesses phenomenal levels of strength, allowing him to easily slaughter normal vampires and even overpower his own children. Mikael single handedly massacred an entire group of enhanced Werewolves.
  • Superhuman speed: Mikael can move at great speeds. When he runs, he appears as a blur. His reflexes are also equally sharp.
  • Superhuman durability: Mikael is highly resistant to physical damage. He might even be partially immune to some of the weaknesses Original Vampires have. Normal bullets, blades weapons and even bombs cannot scratch him, but he is still susceptible to supernatural weapons.
  • Superhuman endurance: Mikael can fight his enemies for prolonged periods of time without getting tired or worn out. He also has an extremely high pain tolerance. He was able to wake up from Papa Tunde’s blade being inside of him, and remove it by himself without wincing in pain at all.
  • Mind compulsion: Mikael like all Vampires has the ability to hypnotize humans and force them to do whatever he tells them to do. Since he’s an Original Vampire, he’s also capable of controlling other vampires, and is immune to their own mesmerism. Mikael can also manipulate a person’s feelings and memories as well; along with reading their thoughts.
  • Immortality: Mikael is immortal and will live forever unless killed.
  • Master combatant: Before Mikael became a Vampire, he was a top level Viking warrior. Over the centuries, his fighting skills have not diminished, and Mikael still stands as practically the deadliest fighter to ever walk the earth.

Trivia[]

  • Mikael is the fourth Original vampire to appear in the series.
  • Mikael is the first of many parents to be turned into vampires, followed by Pearl, Katerina (Katherine), Isobel and Abby, Jenna, Bill Forbes, and formerly Alaric.
  • It is currently unknown if Mikael sired any vampires. Although given that he hated the vampire species as a whole much like his son Finn, it is unlikely that he sired any himself.
