The Dungeon Guardians (also known as simply Guardians or Sphere worshippers) are minor antagonists in the construction and management simulation game Dwarf Fortress. As the name would imply, they are humanoid creatures changed and empowered by deities to guard their owners' mysterious locations. These creatures are featured solely in "Adventure Mode", and do not appear in "Fortress Mode".

Due to the procedural generation of the world and civilizations in the game, coupled with the fact that many elements can be customized by the player, the strength and placement of the Guardians vary greatly.

Through unclear reasons, deities have transformed these humanoid creatures, forcing them to guard these mysterious sites, twisting their morality, nature and personalities into being violently hostile minions.

Biography[]

History[]

These mysterious sites come in the form of dungeons, lairs or palaces. All of these buildings were created in "a time before time", with the builders being completely unknown. At some point before the events of a player's generated Adventure Mode game, humanoid historical figures have been completely changed to become hostile, loveless and tenacious guardians of these locations.

Gameplay[]

Whether a mysterious site is found by chance or a given quest, the player character can come across the aforementioned sites, but will always be defended by these guardians. In ASCII mode, guardians appear as a magenta "Ă¿" in-game, while with graphics, they appear as standard humanoids with light purple skin, sharing the same skin color as necromancers.

Guardians, at some point before the events of gameplay, have been transformed into immortal, empowered and completely hostile beings, and as such, they do not bother finding spouses or loved ones in any form. The nature of their being is due to a divine syndrome. When performing nearly any task, they feel no emotions whatsoever. Their combat stats are substantially high, and they wear full suits of armor as well as wielding magical weapons and consumable magical substances that heal the user, even to the point of making missing limbs grow back perfectly. However, creatures that are immune to poison (which have the [GENERAL_POISON] token) do not benefit from this substance.

There are three ranks of guardians: the lowest rank will have titles such as "fear worshiper" or "minion of nightmares". The middle ranks will have names such as "cleric of fear" or "dread shaman". These middle tanks have titles such as a priest or shaman. The highest ranks will have names such as "elder of dread" or "nightmare master". All guardians are attached to a deity's sphere, and their title will reflect that. The higher the rank, the more skilled of a combatant it will be. If all guardians are dealt with, the player has access to a divine material known as a "primordial remnant", which is a mythical object also related to a deity sphere.

Personality[]

When viewing the status screen of these guardians, it is shown they have potentially neutral or positive traits, but also have "current" ones marked in yellow to show the negative ones that are affecting their actions. It is unknown if these guardians were changed against their will or because of some type of "reward" or curse, seeing as deities can curse worshipers if they are disrespected. These curses can include becoming a werebeast or a vampire.

Every single part of a guardian's traits revolve around being hostile, relentless, and morally bankrupt guards. They are also highly skilled combatants, which is a likely effect of their divine syndrome. These skills do not raise or decline.

Trivia[]

  • Their nature and appearance suggests they are one of the Night Creatures, although it is currently unknown if this is the case.
  • Goblins also appear as some of the guardians. The developers have confirmed they have implemented this due to them never needing to eat or drink, and being biologically immortal.
