~ Frank after being turned into a vampire. |
Detective Adam Barrett, better known by his alias, Frank, is the secondary antagonist of the 2024 vampire horror comedy film Abigail.
Originally a detective before choosing a life of crime for the freedom it represented, he is hired by Lambert to join a group of kidnappers in capturing a vampire named Abigail Lazar; she is the daughter of Kristof Lazar, a powerful vampiric crime lord whom the kidnappers seek to extract $50 million from in exchange for her release. Beneath his hot-headed but otherwise rational exterior lies his true nature: a power hungry monster.
He was portrayed by Dan Stevens, who also played David Collins in The Guest, Sir Lancelot in Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, David Haller in Legion, the Beast in the live-action Beauty and the Beast remake, Scarlemagne in Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, Hal in the 2020 The Call of the Wild adaptation and Herr König in the 2024 Cuckoo.
Biography[]
Frank is introduced alongside the other kidnappers, immediately calling out Joey's initial hesitation to kidnap a child and exposing her as ultimately willing to. After they succeed, an old ally of his named Lambert guides him and the other kidnappers to a spooky old manor to lay low and collect the ransom money.
Later in the night, Frank is the only member of the group who doesn't take a threat Abigail makes towards Joey that she's "sorry about what's going to happen to her" lightly, and investigates further to see whose daughter they kidnapped. Upon discovering it's Kristof Lazar's daughter he freaks out, leading to chaos erupting among the group. Things only get worse when their victim is revealed to be a vampire who purposely got herself kidnapped.
During his first attempt to capture Abigail he takes a stake to the leg, but manages to keep moving throughout the night in spite of his injury. When the group eventually manages to capture Abigail, he is shocked when she disclosed their identities. Frank then makes a deal with Abigail to release her in return for his survival, but goes back on it once she gives him the information he is seeking (although Abigail's info also turns out to be false).
After Abigail escapes the group's trap, he teams up with Joey to find the power source of the manor, while the other two survivors take a separate route, only for one of them to be offed shortly after thanks to Abigail's bite allowing her to mind control the other one of them. Luckily he and Joey defeat their mind controlled former ally with the power of sunlight, and also manage to discover the whereabouts of his old ally Lambert, who reveals that he is planning to betray Abigail, and enlists Frank's help. When offered the power to become a vampire, Frank accepts it and is turned by Lambert. However, Frank kills Lambert shortly after, out of revenge for the former's initial betrayal.
Upon fully embracing his vampiric nature, Frank overpowers and briefly feeds upon Abigail - thus becoming more dangerous than his former captor. After threatening to turn Joey into his puppet and kill her son Caleb later on, Joey is desperate and teams up with a weakened Abigail to take Frank down for good. The three engage in a tense battle, with Frank getting the upper hand up to the point where he manages to bite Joey and commands her stake Abigail. However, Joey turns the stake on him only to fail at stabbing him. Abigail then reveals that a power like mind control takes time to learn, and she manages to bite Frank in return. Abigail and Joey then proceed to overpower and stake him, finally killing Frank and ending his short-lived ambitions once and for all.
Personality[]
Frank is a hot-headed and foul mouthed man, which is balanced out by his rather cunning mind and level head. He is pretty much hates kids like swearing, yelling, or assaulting them (especially Abigail). Outside of holding Abigail at gunpoint and threatening her (prior to the reveal of her true nature) he is not shown to be much worse than his fellow criminals (and the sole exception could be chalked up to desperation).
Despite his abrasive attitudes, he has a commanding nature that allowed him to keep the other kidnappers in line and could swiftly adapt plans while directing the others into following them smoothly. This was exemplified when he was able to get Peter and Sammy to side with him against Joey, albeit all were able to work together when the truth about Abigail was revealed.
However, after capturing Abigail, she reveals to the rest of the group that Frank abandoned his career as a detective and chose a life of crime for the "freedom" it brought him. Akin to Abigail, he displays a sadistic enjoyment at toying with his enemies, as he pretended to accept the caged Abigail's deal, only to reveal he was lying and taunted her for what he perceived as ignorance (albeit, she was also playing him). Frank's lust for power is later confirmed to be true when he accepts Lambert's offer to become a vampire, exposing his desire for power.
Frank's one (potentially) redeeming feature is his sense of loyalty, as he seems to genuinely trust Lambert, doubting his betrayal earlier in the film. He later kills Lambert for his betrayal, even after he offers to work together with him. However, it is unconfirmed if his sense of loyalty extends beyond his own well being, and if he would betray an ally if it benefited him. His betrayal of Joey could point towards the latter, but their companionship was only born from a mutual desire to survive against Abigail, and they clearly disliked each other outside of that.
It is uncertain if Frank's cruelty was made worse by his vampiric transformation, or having power merely made him stop hiding the bulk of it. His sadism and psychopathy are ultimately what lead to his downfall, since instead of quickly killing Joey, he tortures her by impaling metal rods, and with threats to her son; similarly, he could have killed the weakened Abigail, but his cruelty and perhaps vengeful personality made him drag it out with repeated broken bones. By the time he finally tried to kill them properly, they had managed to coordinate well enough to pin him and stake his heart, killing him. Amusingly and befitting his crass vocabulary, he muttered a simple yet shocked and annoyed, "F**k!" upon realising his doom.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Vampire physiology: All of the base level vampire powers such as superhuman strength and speed, as well as regeneration.
- Superhuman strength: Becoming a newborn vampire granted Barrett possessed inhuman strength allowing him to overpower experienced vampires as well as toss a human up one floor level above with ease.
- Accelerated healing factor: After his transformation, Frank obtained the ability to regenerate injures as his impaled leg was fully healed for him to walk on it again and even after Abigail kicks it.
- Enhanced vision: His vision was improved as he no longer needed to wear glasses as his vampirism cured his retina.
- Blood consumption: Frank also becomes more empowered than the average vampire after consuming some of Abigail's blood. It is unknown, albeit unlikely, if he would have been stronger than Kristof Lazar.
Weaknesses[]
- Power limitation: During the final battle, Abigail reveals that powers such as siring and mind control can only be obtained via experience, making him less skilled than a longtime vampire like her or her father.
- Wooden stake: As a vampire, is vulnerable to being stabbed by a stake which explodes his body into pieces.
Trivia[]
- Each of the kidnappers were named after members of the Rat Pack, with his name obviously being inspired by Frank Sinatra, who was also considered the leader of his group.
