~ Rulue's description from Puyo Puyo 2. |
Rulue (ルルー, Rurū), also known as Lulu in the first arcade game's localization, is the main antagonist of Madou Monogatari 3, the protagonist of its prequel, Madou Monogatari R and later the protagonist of Rulue no Tekken Haruyasumi. She's also a supporting character of its puzzle battle spin-off series, Puyo Puyo.
She's the ruler of the Mokemoe labyrinth, where she's worshipped and revered by all the monsters that live there as their queen. Any humans that step foot in the labyrinth are personally eliminated by Rulue.
Rulue is Arle Nadja's self proclaimed love-rival, as well as a powerful martial artist. Her insatiable crush on Satan usually drives her to attack innocent bystanders. She will threaten those that she views as potential love rivals, and if any woman beats her to the punch and earns Satan's love first, she will summon her loyal servant, Minotaur to slaughter them with his axe.
In Japanese, she was originally voiced by Shiori Nakaishi, and is currently voiced by Kanako Kondo. In English, she was voiced by Kira Buckland.
History[]
Madou Monogatari 2[]
Rulue firsts spots Arle exploring her beloved's dungeon. Arle, unaware that the place was set up by Satan to find a woman strong enough to marry him, receives a threatening letter from Rulue, telling her to stay away form her darling Satan. Arle, not knowing either Rulue or Satan, ignores the letter and moves on deeper into the dungeon.
Madou Monogatari 3[]
As Arle is on her way to the Ancient Magic School with Carbuncle, she is ambushed by Rulue, who notices Carbuncle on her shoulder. Rulue assumes that Arle cleared Satan's trials and married him, receiving Carbuncle as proof of their pact. Arle tries to explain to her that she actually beat Satan unconscious, but Rulue doesn't believe her and orders her minion, Minotaur to slaughter her. Arle runs away and ends up trapped in the Lost Forest. Rulue and Minotaur give up the chase, assuming the girl won't survive. Rulue then personally goes to Satan's dungeon and finds him collapsed on the floor.
Arle manages to escape the forest through an underground maze, but due to having to overuse her Ice Storm spell, she ends up with frostbite. She visits the local town to buy medicine, but the shopkeeper tells her that they have been unable to gather ingredients lately, as monsters have infested the nearby Mokemoe labyrinth. Arle makes a deal with the shopkeeper and goes into the labyrinth to eliminate the monsters.
At the bottom of the dungeon, she encounters Rulue, who summons Minotaur to eliminate her once again. Arle wins the battle and realizes Rulue was the one in control of the monsters. Rulue then reveals that the labyrinth originally belonged to her, and that the humans were the ones intruding on her domain. She agrees to share the medicine with the townspeople, with the condition that Arle must bring her with her to enroll in the magic school. Arle accepts, and the two embark on a new journey together.
Madou Monogatari R[]
This story takes place roughly 2 years before Madou 3. Rulue, the young daughter of a rich family, wakes up and finds herself locked inside an unknown tower. She battles the monsters there, searching for the key to the exit. As she reaches the top floor, she is confronted by the count, a vampire who kidnaps and kills virgin women to drink their blood. Rulue tries to fight, but is completely outmatched by his demonic powers. As she is about to lose the fight, Satan breaks into the tower, furious that his precious Carbuncle was kidnapped, and absorbs the count's life force, weakening him enough for Rulue to match him in strength and win. Satan hugs Carbuncle, who had been stolen from him by the count, and learns that Rulue saved Carbuncle. He tells Rulue that Carbuncle is a gift he is saving for his future wife, and as thanks, offers to fly her home.
Hachamecha Kimatsu Shiken[]
Rulue and Arle make it to Satan's school of magic. They both enroll and take classes together, though Rulue would struggle to make much progress. The school year she spent with Arle would only increase her hatred for her, becoming extremely jealous of her rapid improvement.
During finals, the two would compete harshly for the highest grade. Their enthusiasm would accidentally get them trapped in Phantom God's dungeon, where the two would now find themselves battling for their lives. Realizing how powerless she is, Rulue decides to end her petty grudge and entrusts her fate to Arle, admitting that she could never hope to surpass her. She would ultimately forget any of this ever happened, as Arle asks Phantom God to wipe her memories after she becomes his master.
Rulue no Tekken Haruyasumi[]
Rulue returns as the protagonist in her own visual novel for the Windows 95. With over 30 endings, Rulue's ultimate fate and even some of her origins will change drastically depending on the player's actions. Some notable endings include:
- Rulue is defeated by Arle, who had been turned into a half-vampire mind slave by the count. They both serve him for the rest of their lives and are never seen again.
- Satan leads Rulue to Castle Count to help her settle the score with him once and for all. She uses the power of the sun to pulverize the count's body, turning him into a bloody, gory mess.
- Rulue gives up on Satan and the path of sorcery, and dedicates the rest of her life to the annihilation of demonkind in order to avenge her grandmother, who sacrificed herself to protect Rulue from Demon Servant.
- Rulue tells the Masked Principal of her dreams and accidentally confesses her love directly to Satan. In respect for her pure feelings, Satan removes his disguise and opens his heart to her, asking for more time to sort out his feelings for Arle.
Powers and Abilities[]
Martial Arts[]
Rulue is a master of hand-to-hand combat. After extensive research and study, she has combined both ancient and modern martial arts from all over the world into her own fighting style. Some of her moves are so powerful, they even rival magic spells in terms of destructive ability. Though in recent years, she has chosen to avoid fighting herself, leaving most of the grunt work to her minions.
- Rock Smashing Palm: Rulue strikes with the heel of her hand, causing damage to her opponent's internal organs.
- Shoulder Throw: A judo technique that sends her opponent flying, using their weight against them.
- The Queen's Dance: Rulue's ultimate attack. A flurry of strikes that deal massive damage. As powerful as Schezo's Areiyādo spell.
- Charge: A breathing technique that powers up Rulue's next move.
- Burning Dance: A dance that stuns onlookers with its beauty, preventing them from fighting back.
- Soul Crusher: An intimidating swing that frightens her opponents, making them cower in fear, unable to properly defend themselves.
- Counter: Rulue anticipates her opponent's next attack, striking them simultaneously.
- Sleep Dance: A dancing technique that makes her opponent drowsy.
- Limb Lock: A judo technique that dislocates her opponent's leg joints, preventing them from moving properly.
- Head Smasher: An axe kick to the top of the opponent's head that causes a concussion, disrupting their thinking, and by extension, their magical abilities.
- Power Wave: A breathing technique that creates a shockwave from her body, speeding up the natural healing of wounds.
Weaknesses[]
- Low magic growth: Rulue has no talent for magic, and even after a year of studying at the magic school she struggles to learn even the most basic of spells. She compensates by honing her martial art abilities, but this poses a problem against opponents like Owlbear, who can accurately read her body's movements and dodge every single one of her physical attacks. Rulue was defeated 7 times in a row by Owlbear before giving up and resorting to getting Arle to dispose of him. However, Satan has reassured her that her magic is steadily improving, even if very slowly, stating that if she was truly hopeless with magic, he would not have let her enroll in his school.
Magic[]
- Rulue Special: The only magic Rulue can use. It allows her to warp objects from her right hand to her left hand, and vice versa. She struggles to control it properly, and can only cast it if she's in peak physical condition. Arle often mocks her for the tacky spell name.
- Hidden potential: Rulue actually has tremendous magical powers slumbering deep inside her. Both Schezo and Satan can sense it, however Rulue herself cannot.
Personality[]
As the queen of the monsters, Rulue generally avoids contact with any other humans, sometimes straight up holding animosity towards her own species, likely as a result of falling in love with a demon at a young age. She carries herself with authority, usually only speaking up to issue commands for her subjects. When it comes to love, she is prone to violent outbursts of anger, which are often targeted at Arle. But as long as Satan isn't the topic of conversation, Rulue is able to keep a clear head, and is willing to negotiate and even collaborate with others to achieve her goals.
Relationships[]
Minotaur[]
Minotaur is deeply devoted to Rulue, and will do anything she asks. A fact which she happily abuses. Rulue always keeps Minotaur closes by, so he may be summoned at a moment's notice. She appreciates his skills, if only because it spares her the trouble of getting her hands dirty. Minotaur is not bothered by any of this, as being useful to Rulue brings him joy.
Satan[]
Rulue has completely devoted her life to Satan ever since he saved her life when she was sixteen. She has prepared herself to do anything necessary to increase her chances of marrying him, even if those things go against Satan's wishes. While Satan himself was once grateful to her for helping rescue Carbuncle, he has all but forgotten about her, and usually ignores her. This is likely because he does not consider her a worthy enough woman to marry, much to her frustration.
Arle[]
After the initial misunderstanding of Arle being married to Satan is cleared up, Rulue tolerates her, and realizes that she may be useful to achieving her goals. The two sometimes work together, but do not consider each other friends. Satan's initial infatuation with Arle is often the cause of many conflicts between the two. Rulue is somewhat envious of Arle's powers, as her ineptitude for magic is what has kept her from catching Satan's attention for the longest time.
