Oh! I'm Sicilian!
~ Buddha Bonpensiero.

Lino "Buddha" Bonpensiero is a supporting character in the 2021 crime drama film, The Many Saints of Newark, which is a prequel to the HBO Television Series The Sopranos.

He is a soldier in the Soprano Crew of the Italian-American New Jersey DiMeo Crime Family and is also the father of Salvatore "Big Pussy" Bonpensiero, a close friend of future family boss, Tony Soprano.

He was portrayed by Joey Diaz, who also played Stewey McMann in The Dog Who Saved Christmas and Roman Barbieri in Mafia III.

Biography[]

Background[]

Lino Bonpensiero was born presumably in the late 1910's to the early 1920's in what is implied to be Northern New Jersey, however he as pointed out his Sicilian heritage, implying that either him or his parents were Sicilian immigrants. According to Lino, his mother once met Frank Sinatra's mother. Sometime prior to the 1960's, Lino joined and became a soldier of the DiMeo Crime Family, undertaking the nickname "Buddha" most likely to do his appearance. At some point around this time, Buddha married an unknown woman and had three children, Salvatore, Edward and Marianucci.

The Many Saints of Newark[]

Buddha is first seen at Janice's conformation party where he is having a conversation with Aldo "Hollywood Dick" Moltisanti and a bishop, whom he shows his son, Sal, now nicknamed "Big Pussy" and Silvio Dante, who are both young members of the DiMeo Family. Buddha is then informed that Lou DiMaggio, a friend of the family, is on the phone which is inside of Ercole DiMeo's manor, to which Buddha soon picks up and starts talking to him. A few days later at Hollywood Dick's funeral, Buddha watches in frustration after seeing Aldo's son. Dickie Moltisanti break a TV that him and the rest of the mobsters were watching, to which Dickie yells that he wished the rioter who killed Hollywood Dick killed them instead (despite being the true killer of his own father).

Four years later in 1972, Buddha, Dickie, Johnny Boy Soprano and Frankie the Guitarist leave the Club Silhouette after just watching a show there. While joking around, Buddha tells Dickie that he would "eat [the] shit" of his Italian comare, Giuseppina. Dickie, in a blind rage, kicks Buddha to the floor while simultaneously punching him in the face. While this is happening, Buddha is shot in the head by Harold McBrayer, a former associate of the family, killing him instantly.
