The Barlo Soldiers are the robotic footsoldiers of the Machine Empire Baranoia and recurring antagonists in Chouriki Sentai Ohranger. Although they usually serve as minor antagonists, serving only as minor threats before the Machine Beasts, many Barlo Soldiers serve as major antagonists in Chouriki Sentai Ohranger: The Movie and Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger the Movie: The Flying Ghost Ship.
Biographies[]
Past[]
As with all members of the Machine Empire Baranoia, the Barlo Soldiers were built by Emperor Bacchus Wrath and Empress Hysteria some 65 million years ago. With thier Takonpas and never-ending numbers, the Barlo Soldiers helped Bacchus Wrath to devastate and conquer multiple planets. In 1997, Bacchus Wrath sent a scouting squadron of Takonpas to scour the planet’s defences. The scout mission was successful but this also led to Lieutenant Shunpei Kirino dying in Red Puncher when he tried to stop the fighters and the Giant Robo being sealed under rocks.
Ohranger[]
Millions of years later, in 1999, Emperor Bacchus Wrath returns to Earth and leads an invasion of Earth. He rallies his forces and attacks New York and Paris with Baracticas and Takonpas but, overconfident in their abilities, he initially only sends a fleet of Takonpas and Bara Drill to conquer Tokyo. After shooting down Shouhei Yokkaichi, Yuji Mita, Juri Nijou and Momo Maruo in their fighter jets, the Takonpas and an army of Barlo Soldiers hunt down the four humans but they manage to escape after falling from a waterfall. Later, a Barlo Soldier in a Takonpas joins Bara Drill when it attacks Goro Hosino/OhRed in the Tokyo Quarry. Although they have the initial advantage, Goro manages to destroy Bara Drill and the future Ohrangers impale the Bara Soldiers with spears; making it fall onto the Machine Beast and explode which renders the initial attack a failure. The Barlo Soldiers later help Bara Saucer decimate the planet but they are destroyed by the newly formed Ohrangers.
After multiple Machine Beasts are killed, Empress Hysteria learns that the Ohrangers are building the Chouriki Mobiles so she sends Bara Brain to discover the location so that the Barlo Soldiers and thier Takonpas can destroy the hanger. Although this doesn't happen, many Barlo Soldiers appear in thier Takonpas to help Bara Separate but are quickly dispatched by the Chouriki Mobiles. In retaliation, Bacchus Wrath launches a massive invasion with Takonpas but they are swiftly destroyed by Ohranger Robo so Bacchus Wrath has the Barlo Soldiers upgrade Acha and Kocha with a growth program for his monsters.
Shortly after the death of Bara Missiler, Prince Buldont decides to kill the Ohrangers overly theatrically. As such, he sets up a movie called the Machine Empire Century with Acha and Kocha and a legion of Barlo Soldiers before recruiting four Machine Beasts to act as the muscle in his plan; Faucetchuck, Locker Knight, Cat Signal and Kabochumpkin as well as Camera Trick to act as his way of kidnapping his "stars." Using Camera Trick to forcibly teleport others, Buldont is able to lure the Ohrangers to Buldont Studios when they follow Camera Trick where a Barlo Soldier disguised as a human tries and fails to blow them up. Enraged by multiple set-backs, Buldont then scripts the bus full of his hostages to be damaged during a Vietnam war re-enaction scene and fall off a cliff to kill everyone on board. However, the Ohrangers save the children so he sends an platoon of Barlo Soldiers in WW2-era army fatigue to attack them whilst Acha and more Barlo Soldiers cut off other humans’ limbs to make them stronger only for this plan to also fail and the remaining Barlo Soldiers to be destroyed.
When Bara Baby kidnaps Kou to destroy the oil refinery and by extension all of Tokyo with his destructive cries, the Barlo Soldiers help to guard him against the Ohrangers. With the aid of some Takonpas, they manage to hold off the Ohrangers and Bara Baby even accidentally sends Kou plummeting to his death but Goro saves him and the Ohrangers destroy the Barlo Soldiers. After Bacchus Wrath begins to scrap machines that show emotion, at least three Cogs are killed and thrown into a scrapyard. However, a number of scrapped machine parts (including the head of a Barlo Soldier) end up fusing together to form a new Machine Beast called Bara Revenger. Angry with Bacchus Wrath over his perceived betrayal, Bara Revenger turns on the Baranoia so Bacchus Wrath sends Acha and Kocha to brainwash him into fighting the Ohrangers with help from the Barlo Soldiers.
After the death of Bara Devil, during a lull between attacks by the Baranoia, Seiichi Kuroda teams up wuth the Baranoia to defeat the Ohrangers and conquer Earth in exchange for giving him control over Japan. Seiichi disguises himself as a Barlo Soldier and lures Yuji to the Tokyo Power Plant where a real Barlo Soldier uses explosives to trap OhBlue and allows Seiichi to steal his Power Brace. An army of them later accompany Buldont, Acha and Kocha and Bara Vacuum when they fight with the Ohrangers in a game of hot potato over Yuji's Power Brace. The Barlo Soldiers use paddle boats, go-karts and minature race-cars to try and get the upper-hand but are all swiftly dispatched.
After the death of Bomber the Great, Buldont marries Multiwa and they initiate a complete invasion of Earth; bombarding the UAOH Hangar with Takonpas to prevent Ohranger Robo and Tackle Boy from being deployed, capturing OhBlocker and Red Puncher and using Bara Micron's Dark Particles to render the Ohrangers powerless. With the Ohrangers helpless, they conquer Earth with thier However, Dorin sacrifices her life to generate a massive amount of power that destroys Bara Micron and cripples the Machine Empire Baranoia. With thier army completely annihilated and thier offensive capabilities effectively eliminated, Buldont and Multiwa unleash a final desperate attack on Earth; launching an assault with the last few Barlo Soldiers but they and the last of these footsoldiers are easily slain. The Bario Soldiers that helped Bara Saucer and Acha, Kocha and Bara Crusher are remembered by Shouhei after the Ohrangers disband once the Machine Empire Baranoia is no more.
Timeranger[]
Five years later, the Timerangers embark on a journey to understand the previous Sentai teams by using the TimeJets to revisit thier battles. They arrive in the time of Ohranger to see the Bario Soldiers that helped Onbu-Obake and Bara Gear being defeated.
Gaoranger vs Super Sentai[]
The Barlo Soldiers that helped Bara Devil are recalled when Gouki of the Gingamen tells Sotaro Ushi of the Gaorangers about the past fights that other Sentai have had after Lost Highness Duke Rakushaasa makes him lose hope.
Gokaiger[]
Several Barlo Soldiers are part of an army of past enemy grunts fought by the Gokaigers in Los Dark's ghost dimension which houses the 1500 spirits of the villains defeated by the Super Sentai. After losing some of their number in an initial skirmish, the remaining members from each grunt group merged to form the Combined Combatant. Though the stronger opponent, the Combined Combatant proves to be unstable due to internal conflicting among the grunts composing him over who got to finish the pirates off. Taking advantage, the Gokaigers use the Battle Fever J Ranger Keys to destroy the Combined Combatant with the Penta Force cannon.
Zenkaiger[]
A group of Barlo Soldiers are among the villains revived by Super Warumono World to capture the Zenkaigers and remake the Earth as a planet run by villains. They are among the villains led by Super Warumono World to fight the Zenkaigers and Sentai Red. When Super Warumono World is killed, the remaining Barlo Soldiers cease to exist.
Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger[]
Twenty-eight years after the end of the Baranoia Empire, a platoon of Barlo Soldiers is summoned alongside Bara Breaking by Tylerian Donking.to kill Gira and Utsusemimaru after the former wins the tournament for the OhgerCrown. They participate in the final battle against the King-Ohgers, Utchy, Doggie and Riki alongside the Anaroids and Yartot Sailors only to all be swiftly destroyed.
Personality[]
The Barlo Soldiers are extremely loyal and somewhat competent soldiers for the Baranoia. However, they are incapable of speech and often acted like animals; speaking exclusively in mechanical whines and gorilla-like yells and often beat thier chests.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Strength: The Barlo Soldiers are able to throw off three male Ohrangers by shrugging, pin Goro and later Yuri down with their spears as well as strike down Shouhei with single hits from their spears. They are also capable of lifting massive boulders as well as throwing their spears hard enough to pierce straight through wood hut walls as both seen in the 13th episode and a large group easily lifts Bara Hungry overhead on a Japanese throne float.
- Durability: The Barlo Soldiers are almost completely immune to punches and kicks from the Ohrangers.
- Skilled Fighters: The Barlo Soldiers are skilled fighters who can match the Ohrangers in battle such as in the 11th episode when one fighta Yuji and his Chouriki Tonfa.
- Eye Beams: The Barlo Soldiers can flip up their face-plates and unleash blue energy beams from their eyes strong enough to take down Ohrangers as well as knock down Bara Revenger with single hits.
- Expert Fighter Pilots: The Barlo Soldiers are skilled fighter pilots since they prove to be very capable in their Takonpas.
- Dog-fighters: The Barlo Soldiers are excellent dog-fighters as seen in the first episode when they ambush Goro and Momo in thier jets.
- Net Spit: The Barlo Soldiers can spew nets from thier "mouths" to restrain enemies as seen in the 23rd episode. These are strong enough to restrain Momo and later the armoured Shouhei to the extent that they are unable to escape.
- Cog Projection: The Barlo Soldiers can spew cogs from thier "mouths" to strike the enemy which are sharp enough to cut straight through tree branches and cause enough damage to knock Bara Revenger to his knees.
- Great Surgeons: As seen in the 8th episode, the Cogs are able to take apart Acha and Kocha to install a growth program inside them.
- Human Forms: Some Barlo Soldiers can assume multiple different human forms during the movie and the 26th episode.
- Levitation: As shown in the 26th episode, the Barlo Soldiers can flip and spin in mid-air.
- Bomb Wiring: The Barlo Soldiers laid explosives to trap Yuji in the 17th episode.
- Burrowing: During the 17th episode, a Barlo Soldier is shown jumping up from underground to unleash underground attacks.
- Cart Driving: In the 17th episode, several Barlo Soldiers are shown to be skilled at driving around go-karts.
- Boxing: As seen in the 20th episode, the Barlo Soldiers are reasonably skilled boxers.
- Robot Piloting: A Barlo Soldier was able to pilot Kendama Robo out of its hangar in the 21st episode.
- Combination: As seen in Gokaiger, the Barlo Soldiers can fuse with the other footsoldiers to form the Combined Combatant.
Weaknesses[]
- Fire: As seen in the 1st episode, the Barlo Soldiers are extremely vulnerable to fire as it almost immediately eats through their metal skins and destroys their vital circuitry.
Arsenal[]
- Spears: The Barlo Soldiers carry large silver sticks that can become spears with razor sharp golden tips in battle.
- Electric Shocks: The Barlo Soldiers can also stab or tap thier enemies with the tips of thier spears to electrocute them.
- Battle Staffs: The Barlo Soldiers' sticks can also become regular sticks again to bludgeon their enemy.
- Takonpas: The Barlo Soldiers' signature weapons are large brown fighters that can fire blue energy spirals from gattling guns on thier undersides.
- Machine Guns: An army of Barlo Soldiers use machine guns extensively during the movie. One later uses one to try and kill a child and some hospital staff during Bacchus Wrath’s Super Machine Beast scheme.
- Bombs: A Barlo Soldier used bombs to drop the stairs out from under Yuji so that Seiichi Kuroda could steal his Power Brace.
