Colonel Armando Becker is the secondary antagonist of the 2012 video game Max Payne 3. He was the corrupt commander of the Unidade de Forças Especiais, a friend and ally of Victor Branco, and rival to Wilson Da Silva.
He was voiced by the late Bira Castro.
Biography[]
Background[]
Little is known about Becker's life before 2012, though his surname suggests that he's of German descent. At some point, after he grew up, he joined the Unidade de Forças Especiais, the São Paulo Police Department's tactical unit, where he rose through the ranks, and eventually became its commander. He would later become fluent in English, and become a close friend and ally to Victor Branco, a local politician, and the middle brother of wealthy businessman Rodrigo Branco. Becker would gain a reputation for being an arms dealer, and for being ruthless against criminals.
At some point, he met Wilson Da Silva, a detective with the São Paulo Police Department, which began a heated rivalry between the two.
Max Payne 3[]
By the time the year 2012 came, Becker and the UFE were waging war against Comando Sombra, São Paulo's biggest street gang. He targeted Serrano, the gang's leader, in four different operations, but the UFE would fail to kill or capture him in each of them. Becker would also target other major criminals, such as the leader of the Tropa Z gang.
In early 2012, the Branco family hosted a charity party on the rooftop of their manor, which Becker was attending as a guest. He and Victor would talk with one another before leaving. Eventually, Comando Sombra members arrived to kidnap Rodrigo and his wife, Fabiana, causing Max Payne and Raul Passos, bodyguards hired by the family, to pursue their kidnappers. Max would save Fabiana, and head off to rescue her husband, with Becker and Marcelo Branco, Rodrigo and Victor's younger brother, trying to calm her down.
After Max saved Rodrigo, Becker, his second-in-command Bachmeyer, and a few UFE members, arrived and executed the remaining gangsters. Da Silva showed up, and tried to tell Becker not to kill the remaining gangster, as Da Silva had wanted to interrogate them instead. This would lead into an argument where Becker told Da Silva that the latter was sticking his nose into where it did not belong. Later, Comando Sombra would successfully kidnap Fabiana at a nightclub, and Rodrigo sent Max and Passos to pay the ransom money to rescue her, only for the Crachá Preto militia to destroy the deal. At a meeting in the Fábricas Branco building following this incident, Rodrigo would tell everyone at the meeting that once Fabiana was rescued, he would move away from São Paulo. Becker asked him not to "give up" on the city, and that if Rodrigo "did as [he] asked," Fabiana would be returned safe, with Victor supporting his claim in an effort to convince Rodrigo to stay.
As Passos, Marcelo, and Victor left his office, Becker told Rodrigo that Fabiana would be rescued by his best men, before leaving the office himself. Soon after this, however, members of the Crachá Preto attacked the building. During the siege, Becker sent Bachmeyer to mercilessly execute Rodrigo, in an attempt by Victor to frame Max, who had been fighting his way through the building in an attempt to find and rescue Rodrigo.
Later, after Max tried, and failed, to save Fabiana from being executed by Serrano, Becker sent Bachmeyer to lead squads into the Nova Esperança favela, in an effort to destroy Comando Sombra, as well as to capture and sell more people to the Crachá Preto as a part of the organ harvesting operation that they, Victor, and Álvaro Neves, the Crachá Preto's leader, were running at the abandoned Imperial Palace Hotel. During the operation, several gangsters and civilians were killed, while several more, including Serrano, were captured. Max, who had begun working with Da Silva, and had watched the UFE's attack on the favela, would follow the trail to find out what was going on, while making sure Fabiana's sister would make it out of the city alive.
Eventually, after Max destroyed the Crachá Preto at the Imperial Palace Hotel, he attacked the UFE's headquarters in an attempt to find and kill Becker. Max, with the help of prisoners that Da Silva released to trigger a riot, fought his way through the UFE, and found the tape implicating Bachmeyer and Becker in Rodrigo's death. He would kill the former outside of Becker's office, and used his ID tag to get inside. Becker would be confronted by Max, and began laughing maniacally, which caused the latter to nearly choke him to death, yelling that he knew everything that Becker had done, only to be stopped by Victor holding him at gunpoint, who smugly told him that he did not know everything, and "thanked" him for eliminating the Crachá Preto. Max rammed into Victor's head, disarming him, only for Becker to taze him, and as the two fled, cut Max off by locking him inside Becker's office.
With Victor's life in danger, and out of fear that the whole scandal could be exposed, he planned to escape the city on plane. Max and Da Silva, finding out about this, drove to the airport to stop him. After the former fought a long, hard battle against his men, Becker was confronted by Max in the hangar, who yelled that he "had nowhere else to go," and would take part in a massive shootout with his soldiers against Max. The fight ended in the latter's favor, after he killed all of Becker's men, jumped off plane stairs, and shot a grenade that Becker had launched from his grenade launcher, which exploded near him, and mortally wounded him, throwing him a few meters from where he was standing.
He found himself at Max's mercy, and the latter would choose to either execute him, or to let him die of his wounds. Regardless of Max's choice, Becker would perish, and his grenade launcher was used to take down his soldiers, and destroy Victor's plane. After his death, the UFE was permanently disbanded, and Becker's efforts in protecting Victor from punishment would be for naught, as the latter was arrested, and later found hanged in his cell, either in an act of vengeance or that of suicide.
