And it was here that I remembered
The ominous words of Nadox
Who warned that the coming of the Archons would be presaged,
Not by the moon and stars,
But by the festering of the Void,
Cold and black and infinite.
~ The Doom-Song of Karcist Viekudh.
The Heaving Devourer cast out in its fetid mindlessness
For companions of equal hunger
Four were crafted from the flesh of the newborn Material realm
Mewling, formless things that served the Devourer
Faceless eternal impotence and hunger
Ever yearning to escape the turbulent darkness of The Outer Void
and into the physical world created by Yaldabaoth
The Archons ache to consume the cosmos one world at a time
Until their teeth have torn through final surviving world,
and the Great Winnower is revenged upon its creation
Which will return the universe to its birth state – without Light
~ A Proto-Sarkic scripture from "The Ends Justify the Means of Production".

The Archons are major antagonists in the SCP Foundation series. They are a group of beings that represent the primordial chaos, the stars and the darkness of the cosmos, and serve the Old God Yaldabaoth.

They play an overarching role in the "Hecatoncheires Cycle" series.

History[]

Background[]

The Archons serve Yaldabaoth, the demiurge, and act as the Old God's servants. They were created by Mekhane out of Yaldabaoth's body as a sign of love. After Mekhane shattered herself to keep Yaldabaoth from destroying her planets, the Archons stayed by their master's side to keep him company during his imprisonment.

Meeting the Scarlet King[]

At some point one of the Archons of Yaldabaoth noticed that Lord Goran, one of the Scarlet King's servants, attempted to conquer a universe already subjugated by an Archon of Yaldabaoth.

The Archon was angered by this, started to battle Lord Goran and defeated him within an hour, before dragging the being by its horns back to the Scarlet King. The Archon demanded to know why the King of the Darkness Below would attempt to violate the Treaty of Thorns and Flesh (a pact that stated that universes conquered or targeted by Yaldabaoth or the Scarlet King are off-limits to each other). The Scarlet King apologized and stated that Lord Goran acted on his own, promising to punish his servant.

The Six Ordeals of Grand Karcist Ion[]

The Archons were partly-responsible for granting Grand Karcist Ion his great powers. Trying to stop the mortal who sought apotheosis, they put him through six trials, which he completed. This likely led to him defeating Yaldaboath and the Archons, and allowing him to "wear the old god's flesh as armor and craft a kingdom out of it's body". However, according to Simon Oswalt, Ion in fact failed to defeat the god and was turned into the seventh Archon.

SCP-4140[]

An Archon, that would later be known as SCP-4140, had manifested itself inside a deep cave where it was discovered by the Daevites. Seeing that it was growing and engulfing its surroundings the Daevites forced their slaves to play music to it in order to keep it from destroying everything in its path. Daevite priestesses forced their slaves to sing to it nonstop as part of a ritual, but it came to an end when Karcist Otrava took the Daevites down and liberated the slaves.

As the music had stopped the Archon was able to engulf the interior of the cave system forcing the Karcist to sacrifice the priestesses to it in order to halt its growth. While Otrava was meditating the Archon got hold of his mind and showed him its true nature as one of Yaldabaoth's Archons. Just as it was about to attack the Karcist the slaves came to his aid and played the music in order to put it back to sleep. Refusing to force the slaves to spend their lives playing music for the Archon, Otrava decided to transform into a Kiraak by using his body to cover the walls of the cave and produce clones of himself that would play the music for the ensuing years.

In modern times, the SCP Foundation found the Archon, following an earthquake that caused a cave-in that severed portions of the Karcist's body, resulting in those portions to be atrophied. Designating the Archon as SCP-4140 and Otrava's flesh as SCP-4140-1, the Foundation formed a provisional underground site where a team of fifteen musicians designated Tau-8, also known as "Zann's Violists", were to play the music to protect the world.

SCP-2480[]

It is believed by the Serpent's Hand that the Grand Karcist Ion that was summoned by the Adytum's Wake which resulted in the creation of SCP-2480, was in actuality an Archon masquerading as him. In its attempts to bolster Yaldabaoth's army, the Pseudo-Ion converted Oswalt into its religion and have him expand the Old God's influence on Earth.

Hecatoncheires Cycle[]

In an alternate reality, an Archon had managed to subjugate this version of Earth, destroying all civilization and rendering all inhabitants nothing more than wild animals.

Around the fifth of September, 1957, all of the Foundation Site-07 and all of its staff and contained anomalies were transported into this reality after Marius Albescu, teenage Sarkite who had been contained as SCP-4712, came into contact with an anomalous mirror that allowed viewing to alternate realities during an attack on the site. There Marius after being fed by personnel some of this Earth's local fauna the Grand Karcist himself contacted him. Ion explained to Marius what they were dealing with was an Archon and tasked him to lead the stranded personnel in fighting it.

In the ensuing years, Marius taught the Site-07 personnel how to utilize fleshcrafting to survive and defend themselves against the local monsters who were after him. However, in 1991, the monsters were able to break through their defences and during the chaos the Archon took control of almost all of the personnel and forced them to massacre each other, leaving Marius the only survivor. Marius knowing that there was a gateway to his home reality feared that the Archon would use it to destroy the main reality and so he used his powers to bind the Archon to him in order to keep it trapped to this dead world.

The Foundation eventually discovered the gateway that led to this reality and brought Marius back to Site-91. This allowed the Archon to slowly make its way through the gateway, causing Marius to beg the personnel to return him to that reality. The Foundation decided to send Mobile Task Force Beta-777 to investigate the reality, but when Agent Rebekah Douglas used her psychometric power on an altar she came into contact with the Archon who in turn gave her some its power, effectively making her akin to Ion. This caused her to go into a psychic shock and the mission was aborted. Recognizing the threat lurking in this reality, the Foundation allowed Marius to return to it and keep the Archon trapped.

The Archon established a link to Douglas, causing to become a carrier of the infection that had afflicted the other world. This infection would be designated SCP-7812 which led to the Culebra-Simmons Syndrome, with Douglas becoming known as SCP-7812-A. When SCP-5267-A broke into Site-91 she attempted to sacrifice SCP-4612-A's to summon another Archon to save her lineage. The Archon was successfully summoned, but when confronted by Douglas, its brethren spoke through her, revealing that it was using Douglas as part of its plan to overtake humanity. In light of this, the summoned Archon abandoned SCP-5267-A, leaving her to be destroyed by Douglas. Douglas would later leave the Foundation and escape alongside SCP-4612-B, leaving her current whereabouts unknown.

SCP-001 (Metaphysician/Karpin Proposal)[]

The Archons resided in a pocket dimension housing a graveyard of realities destroyed by them and their master Yaldabaoth. People who were left stranded in this nightmarish limbo were subjugated by the Archons, being driven mad and start revering them by conducting gruesome rituals. When Foundation agent Margot Kennedy was sent to this realm, she oversaw a group of Neo-Sarkites setting a temple on fire in honor of one of the Archons. The Archon appeared to them as a gigantic eye in the dark sky, but soon it turned its attention to Kennedy, causing its corrupted worshipers to go after her. Thanks to the help of copy of Ion's consciousness inhabiting the spores present in the environment, Kennedy managed to fend them off and escape. The Archon kept looking for her, but "Ion" managed to use his power to hide her, allowing Kennedy to live peacefully with a village of Proto-Sarkites who had also managed to evade being corrupted.

In Memoria, Adytum[]

According to the newly returned Grand Karcist, following his banishment from Earth by Robert Bumaro during the ancient War of the Flesh he ended up within the Nevermeant where he was confronted by the Archons. From then on Ion fought against the malevolent beings, the battle being so catastrophic that if it had taken place in the universe numerous planets would have been shattered. The battle went on for ages, but slowly Ion was able to get the upper hand and killed each of the Archons one by one until killing the last one and emerging victorious, albeit in a weakened state.

Trivia[]

  • In Gnosticism an Archon is a demonic entity that serve the embodiment of evil (usually the Demiurge). They are often tied to the seven planets. They are one of many references to Gnosticism in the Sarkicism.
  • These Archons are not to be confused with other beings described as Archons, such as those mentioned in Fifthist texts such as Star Signals (SCP-1425) or the believed head of the Southern Fifthists, Reverend Archon Celebration "Big Cheese" Horace; SCP-4950, also known as the "Archon Lord"; and the Archons from SCP-8249. It is unknown how these Archons are related to the Archons of Yaldaboth, if at all.
  • The Serpent of the Wanderer's Library was once mistaken for one of the Archons as seen in "The Thing at the Bottom of My Dreams".
  • The author Metaphysician once compared the Archons to the Brethren Moons from Dead Space.
  • In SCP-2688 it references an Archon known as "The Archon of the Cosmic Waters" which was said to have inspired the legends of Abzu and Iku-Turso.
  • Mekhane also has her own servants which are analogous to Yaldabaoth's Archons and are known as the Six Angels or SCP-1564.
  • Due to lack of canon in the SCP Foundation universe, the exact number of Archons varied, ranging from four to seven members.
  • In "NIGHTFALL: Qui Lactis" in which the gods are known figures, the Archons are known as the Six Autophagic Archons.
  • According to the Serpent's Hand in "Lord Jeser", the imposter posing as the Grand Karcist that gave Simon Oswalt his power was in actuality an Archon trying to increase Yaldabaoth's forces.
  • Karcist Halyna Ieva hoped that by feeding the Archons her countless victims they would be overfed and fall. She eventually came to her senses and ceased sacrificing her enemies to the Archons.
