Devil Kazumi (デビル一美 Debiru Kazumi?) is a character in the Tekken series. She is the alter ego of Kazumi Mishima after being consumed by the Devil Gene. She is the final boss of the arcade mode of Tekken 7 for every character, even her own human form.

Biography

Devil Kazumi is the devil manifestation of Kazumi Mishima. The Devil Gene is passed on in the Hachijo Clan, where it is used for stealth assassination of targets who threaten the order and stability of the world. Kazumi trained and grew up alongside Heihachi Mishima, and the two were eventually married and had a son. When Heihachi's path veered towards evil, Kazumi tried to dissuade him to no avail. She then grew repeatedly sick, and in each episode, a violent alter ego appeared to take over her. Eventually this resulted in the full manifestation of Devil Kazumi, the demonic form used by the Hachijos to carry out their missions. Devil Kazumi told Heihachi her purpose had always been to kill him should he choose an evil path, and proceeded to attack him. She was defeated by Heihachi and killed. She passed the Devil Gene on however to her son, Kazuya Mishima.

Appearance

Devil Kazumi's overall design is inspired by that of a kijo and borrows many elements from kabuki theatre design. Her colour scheme is roughly an inversion of her human appearance as Kazumi Mishima. She has red eyes, long white hair with hime cut bangs, and grayish-white skin. She has red markings similar to those used in kabuki theatre makeup on her forehead, neck, wrists, legs, and feet. Spiked, brilliant blue gems grow out of her wrists, neck, knees, and ankles. When her Rage is activated, the color of the gems becomes bright red.

She wears a long white kimono with a red interior. The edge of its sleeves and hem are cut into flame designs. Like her human counterpart, Devil Kazumi wears her kimono with the material crossed right side over left, in the fashion reserved for the dead. She wears a white obi over her kimono which is tied with red rope about her waist. It has a gray butterfly shaped design at the back and a gold Mishima Zaibatsu logo at the front. She has red horns which curve slightly before pointing vertical, and flaming red and gold wings.

Story

Tekken 7

Devil Kazumi makes her first and only appearance in the Story Mode in Tekken 7. Kazumi falls ill and becomes violent a number of times, with Heihachi caring for her in each of these episodes. Eventually, Kazumi's devil form manifests in full and she confronts her husband in the Mishima Dojo. Kazumi Mishima reveals to her husband the reason why she married him. She tells him it is because her family, the Hachijo Clan, want to kill him to avert terrible chaos and death, and that she was to be the one to stop him if he started walking down this path. After a long and grueling fight, Kazumi attempts to kill Heihachi with a Devil's Beam but misses, prompting her to punch him in the face. Heihachi retaliates by uppercutting her, seemingly killing her. Kazumi lies unconscious on the floor, having reverted back to her human form. After Heihachi checks on her body and turns to leave, Kazumi transforms back into her devil form again to attack him from behind. Heihachi grabs her by the neck before she can do so.

Desperate, Kazumi warns her husband about the chain of hatred he would set off if she dies and begs him to release her because of their love for one another. Despite her pleas, Heihachi notices it is a trap, and tells her she is no longer the Kazumi that he knew. He snaps her neck, killing her. As Kazumi lies dead on the floor, Heihachi sheds a single tear over her body.

Gameplay

Devil Kazumi is an unplayable fighter. When playing against her, Devil Kazumi is able to summon a white tiger, which rolls over the opponent or even stands up and claws the back of the opponent. She also shares the Devil Gene's signature devil beam, but, unlike Devil Jin and Devil Kazuya, her beam activates in an instant. She can not only float forward with a bend of a knee but backwards as well. She retains her human form's fighting style and moves. In order to find Devil Kazumi's movelists which is the same movelists as her human form, players must use the cheat engine. Her unique attacks and her exclusive unblockable moves are not named on this list.

Fighting style

Her fighting style is Hachijo-Style Karate mixed with Mishima Style Fighting Karate enhanced with demonic abilities of her own.

Trivia

General:

  • Devil Kazumi's appearance is based on that of a kijo (鬼女?), a female ogre.
    • In Japanese folkore, a woman wronged by her husband might ask the gods for the strength to take revenge and be turned into a kijo. A female oni thus also represented a woman’s repressed or unconscious emotions, and her marginalisation and resentment of her treatment by her husband.[1]
  • Devil Kazumi is the second supernatural female final boss in the series, the first being Unknown in Tekken Tag Tournament and its sequel (although, in Tekken 2, if the player plays as Devil, Angel is the final boss).
    • She is however the first female fighter to become a final boss in a canonical Tekken game.
  • Like Jinpachi Mishima, Kazumi is the game's final boss despite being long deceased by the time of the game's current events.
  • Although Devil Kazumi is the final boss in the arcade mode, she is replaced by Akuma if certain conditions are met during the arcade run.
  • Devil Kazumi is the only devil counterpart of the Mishima family to be unplayable.
    • Because she is an unplayable character, her movelist cannot be obtained organically. However, there are mods that allow Devil Kazumi to be made a playable character. These reveal the names of her unique attacks and exclusive unblockable moves from her move lists.
  • Kazumi's pet tiger changes from regular orange and black coloring to white, Siberian tiger markings when she is in her devil form.
  • Devil Kazumi's intro and win poses are the same as her human form.
  • Devil Kazumi's fighting stance somewhat resembles Devil Jin's fighting stance.
  • Unlike her human form, Devil Kazumi will say "Die!" when she executes her Rage Art.
  • Devil Kazumi has a CG art replacing her human form's CG art which is used when she appears as a special match in Treasure Battle. In it, her tiger's eyes are glowing blue.
  • Like Azazel, the crystals on Devil Kazumi's body will turn red when she has taken too much damage, until she triggers her Rage.
