Mini-Rigs was a sub-set of Kenner's The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi toy lines. The small toy vehicles were offered at a lower price point than standard vehicles due to their small size. Besides the Mini-Rigs, Kenner also released three Body-Rigs.[1]
The toys, initially designed by Mark Boudreaux, were meant to be vehicles "just out of sight" in the movies. Some made later appearances in the Expanded Universe.[1] The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia refers to the PDT-8 Personnel Deployment Transport as a "mini rig", though the term was not applied to any other of those vehicles in fiction.[2]
