The Defense Declarations was an executive order by Chief of State of the New Republic Mon Mothma to denationalized control of the Planetary Security Forces back into the hands of the sector governments. Members of the New Republic would also be expected to support the New Republic Defense Force but could also now control their own planetary defense forces and at greater strength than under the Galactic Empire or the Galactic Republic.^[1]

Its passage caused remaining sectors loyal to the Empire to dismiss it as illegal, but some sectors who had been on the edge, decided to side with the New Republic. Some sectors' loyalties proved sharply divided, leading to hundreds of battles between rival Imperial task forces that further diminished the Empire's ability to wage war. Admiral Gial Ackbar later admitted this decision delivered more worlds to the New Republic than any dozen campaigns could have.^[1]
