Gear: He wears a golden wasabi grinder on his head, emphasizing his DJ persona. His design fuses Japanese cultural motifs with high-tech elements, symbolizing the Octarians’ mix of tradition and technology.

Life and Role

DJ Octavio is the king and leader of the Octarian army. His life revolves around the survival and dominance of his people.

Leadership: Octavio’s leadership is vital for the Octarians, a race exiled to the underground after losing the Great Turf War against the Inklings. He’s a charismatic yet tyrannical figure, known for his unwavering determination to restore the Octarians’ power.

DJ Octavio’s leadership of the Octarians extends beyond traditional command; it involves manipulation and control. One of his most notable actions was the use of hypnosis technology to control his people, including the Octolings, and to further his ambitions.

Hypnosis Technology[]

  • Purpose: After the Octarians' loss in the Great Turf War, DJ Octavio faced growing dissent and dwindling morale among his people. To maintain control and loyalty, he used a form of brainwashing technology, integrated into his music and other devices, to manipulate the Octolings and keep them under his command.
  • Music as a Weapon: Octavio’s DJ persona isn’t just for show—his music has hypnotic properties, designed to influence the minds of his listeners. This is especially evident in the way Octolings were conditioned to fight for his cause, despite many of them potentially questioning his leadership.

Marina’s Escape[]

  • Who is Marina? Marina Ida, one half of the Off the Hook duo in Splatoon 2, was once one of Octavio’s trusted engineers. As an Octoling prodigy, Marina developed several key pieces of Octarian technology, including weapons and systems used in battle.
  • Breaking Free: Marina eventually broke free from Octavio’s control. It’s implied that she started questioning his leadership after realizing the futility of his plans and the ethical issues with hypnotizing her fellow Octarians. Her intelligence and resourcefulness allowed her to resist the brainwashing, escape the Octarian underground, and defect to Inkling society.
  • Impact of Marina’s Escape: Marina’s departure highlights cracks in Octavio’s control and marks a turning point in the Octarian rebellion. Her defection symbolizes hope for Octarians seeking freedom from his tyranny.

Hypnosis of the Octolings[]

  • Enslaved Soldiers: Most Octolings under DJ Octavio’s command were hypnotized into fighting for his cause. Their loyalty wasn’t genuine but rather a result of Octavio’s manipulation through his music and technology.
  • Agent 8’s Story: In Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion, Agent 8 is an Octoling who breaks free from Octavio’s control. Like Marina, Agent 8 represents the growing resistance among Octarians against Octavio’s oppressive rule.
  • A Fragile Army: The use of hypnosis exposes the fragility of Octavio’s army. His reliance on control rather than loyalty indicates his fear of rebellion and the precarious state of Octarian society.

DJ Octavio’s Impact on the Octarian Society[]

DJ Octavio’s hypnotic control of the Octolings reflects his desperation to maintain power and the dire circumstances faced by the Octarians.

  • Cultural Manipulation: Octavio uses his music not only as a weapon but as a cultural tool to keep the Octarians united under his rule.
  • Resistance and Rebellion: Figures like Marina and Agent 8 show that his control isn’t absolute. Their stories inspire others to resist his influence and seek freedom.
  • Divided Society: The hypnotic control creates a divide within Octarian society, with some remaining loyal (willingly or not) and others yearning for independence.

Music: As a DJ, Octavio uses music as both a weapon and a cultural expression. His DJ skills are integral to his character, with his battles often featuring music-themed attacks.
