Skorp[1] (スコープ[2] Sukōpu?) is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, scorpion-based Badnik created by Dr. Eggman.

Appearance[]

The Skorps are orange, black, and gray robots resembling a cross between a scorpion and a tank. On each side of their body they have a caterpillar track for moving around and claws resembling that of a scorpion's. They also have round black faces with orange plating on top and a scorpion-like tail on the middle of their back that consists of several connected spheres and a mace at the tip.

In Sonic Superstars, the Skorps have a more flexible tail and drills for pincers. Additionally, the Skorps now posses a red and yellow color scheme as well.

Game appearances[]

Sonic & Knuckles[]

Skorp

In Sonic & Knuckles and the lock-on game Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Skorps are only found in Sandopolis Zone. In gameplay, they attack with the mace on their tails. When the playable character is in attacking range, they will rear up their tail and take a swing at the player before retracting it to attack again. Skorps are often found atop ledges that the player must cross, making avoiding their attacks and defeating them fairly difficult.

It is advised to time the playable characters' attacks just right when fighting a Skorp.[3] The player's best option is to attack a Skrop quickly with the Spin Attack or Spin Dash just as it pulls back its mace to attack again. A Spin Jump often ends in misery for the player as it invariably results in the Skorps' mace hitting the playable character. Upon destruction, the Skorp releases an Animal and awards the player with 100 points.

Sonic Rivals[]

In Sonic Rivals, a Skorp appears as one of the collectible cards.

Sonic Superstars[]

Skorps reappear in Sonic Superstars, where they can be exclusively encountered in Sand Sanctuary Zone. The Skorps now have a sleeker appearance compared to their debut, with a smoother tail and drills for hands. In gameplay, the Skorps can be found moving left to right on certain platforms until spotting the player, in which it will come to a complete stop before attacking the player by aiming and lunging their long clubbed tail at them. The Skorp can be tricky to defeat due to the mace on their tail, though it is still possible to do if the player times their Spin Jump well. Upon destruction, the Skorp releases an Animal and awards the player with 100 points.

In addition to appearing throughout Sand Sanctuary Zone, the Skorps also appear during the Sand Sanctuary Zone boss, where Dr. Eggman will summon them during the fight alongside Mole Mechas. While the Skorps can still be destroyed by the player, they can also be destroyed by Dr. Eggman's various attacks throughout the boss battle, as well as when the player beats Dr. Eggman. While the Skorps still release Animals if they are destroyed indirectly, they will not award the player points unless they directly destroy them.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, the Skorp first appeared as one of Dr. Eggman's Badniks in the timeline he and Dr. Wily created with the Genesis Wave. After the continuity was rebooted due to the Super Genesis Wave, the Skorps' history became nearly identical to that of their game counterparts'.
