Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was released for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis and marked the debut of Knuckles. The player could choose to play solitary or with Tails. The game also had six save slots and featured the same 3-D Chaos Emeralds stages as Sonic & Knuckles also had. The game also had several two player simultaneous racing mini-games where players could choose between Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. The first player to complete five laps during these stages (which were unique to the series) would be crowned the winner.

Plot[]
Following the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Dr. Robotnik’s Death Egg crash lands on Angel Island. Robotnik learns of the Master Emerald and Chaos Emeralds. In an attempt to collect them for himself, he tricks the island's guardian, Knuckles, into believing Sonic and Tails are threats after the emeralds to rule the world. Sonic and Tails arrive on the island, being ambushed by Knuckles. This is where the game begins.
