"Yang vs. Ruby" is a sparring match between Yang Xiao Long and Ruby Rose that occurred in Patch prior to their enrollment at Beacon Academy.
Preceding Events[]
After Yang defeats Ruby in a hand-to-hand sparring match, Ruby complains about not being able to use Crescent Rose, but Yang tells her that she wants her younger sister to defend herself when she leaves for Beacon Academy. Ruby reluctantly complies, and the two sisters continue their spar.
The Fight[]
Before Ruby can ready her stance, Yang quickly punches her with her left arm, forcing Ruby to block with her wrist, before taking a defensive stance and ducking under the second punch, and then sidestepping to Yang's right, away from the third.
Yang then turns around 180 degrees in order to finish her punch, forcing Ruby to awkwardly walk back with her arms outstretched to avoid it. She then ducks underneath Yang's left leg, as the latter uses it to spring herself up to perform an airborne high kick with her right leg. As the two ready their stances, Yang immediately punches again, forcing Ruby to block it with her left forearm, and then with her right. Ruby then sidesteps out of Yang's third right jab.
Seeing an opening, Ruby smirks and delivers a right hook from behind, only for Yang to casually move her head out of the way and smirk back at Ruby. Yang then performs a leg sweep at Ruby with her left leg, tripping her and leaving her at the mercy of Yang's right hook. At the last second, Ruby panics and uses her Semblance to disperse into rose petals and speed away into the trees.
Aftermath[]
Yang commends Ruby for dodging, but tells her that she won't always run away from her problems. When she receives no response from Ruby, Yang calls out for her to resume the match, only to encounter an Ursa.
