The trailer begins with Ruby asking where she is.
Team RWBY stands on the cliffside overlooking the Ever After with Blake saying that they're in a fairy tale.
Weiss tries to find a logical explanation for their situation while recounting their recent experiences: Ruby becoming friends with Little, Weiss and Blake tied up in vines and captured by the Hunter Mice tribe, and how the Jinxy Peddler stole Yang's Prosthetic Arm.

Ruby running while following the Curious Cat. Ruby playing chess with the Red Prince, who asks her about going to the Tree, which Ruby answers that they needed to go home and the Tree will take them there.
The Cat gives a doubting comment as their hind legs rejoin their front half. Blake trying to reach Gambol Shroud sword but ends up attacked by the vines.

The Blacksmith telling Ruby that she carries a heavy burden with her. Ruby stares down Penny's Maiden Floating Array sword with the latter's reflection. The Blacksmith holding her hammer in her shop. Ruby tells the Blacksmith that she can handle it.
The Blacksmith asks what will happen if Ruby leaves herself behind and what might happen if Ruby does not do so.
The trailer ends with Ruby gives a shocked reaction before she suddenly falls over unconscious.

Ruby: Where am I?
Team RWBY stand on a cliffside overlooking the Ever After, as the camera fades to show the red forest and mushroom areas.
Blake: I think we're in a fairy tale.
Weiss: Let's try to be more logical, shall we? We fell from the sky, Ruby made friends with a tiny mouse, Blake and I got caught by killer vines, and you got your arm stolen by-
Ruby is seen meeting Little, Weiss and Blake are seen wrapped up by vines while many mice celebrate, and Yang is seen wrestling for her arm with a large toy soldier.
Yang: -by a talking raccoon riding on a purple wagon filled with trash.
Weiss: (blinks twice) Yes, that.
Jinxy: Welcome one and all!
Ruby slides down in a strange building into a door.
Red Prince: Tell me, why do you want to go to the tree?
Ruby is seen across a chess board from a person with a crown, Little with her and the rest of Team RWBY the size of chess pieces.
Ruby: We want to go home and we believe the tree can get us there.
Curious Cat: I sense a but approaching.
The cat's lower half approaches and reconnects itself to its upper half.
Blake: But we don't know how to get to the tree.
Curious Cat: You do not go to the tree. The tree goes to you. Unless, of course, you're me, you see.
Yang: Not even a little bit.
Herbalist: What are you?
Yang is seen on a rickety bridge high above a cloudy area.
Alyx: You never were the hero.
Ruby is seen looking at a past version of herself.
Fake Ruby: So what are you gonna be?
Neopolitan angrily looks up and transforms into Ruby.
Blacksmith: You seem to be carrying a rather large burden with you.
Ruby holds a conjured blade of Floating Array with Penny's reflection.
The Blacksmith stands before the fire.
Ruby: I'm fine. I can handle it.
Blacksmith: What if you could leave Ruby Rose behind? Shed like an old coat.
Multiple scenes involving different characters flash by quickly.
Blacksmith: What might happen...
The members of Team RWBY are shown in different locations.
Blacksmith: ...if you don't?
Ruby falls over, unconscious.
