Urd Geales (ウルド・ギールス Urudo Giirusu?) is a second progenitor of the vampires in the Seraph of the End series. He is ruler of Russia and the current leader of the Progenitor Council. Upon learning that a vampire city has fallen in Japan, he heads there with a host of vampire nobles, including Lest Karr. Sentencing Krul Tepes and Ferid Bathory for the consequences of their actions, Urd tasks Ky Luc with overseeing their sentence while he retakes the city.
Having lived in the ancient past, Urd, like Saitō, was transformed by Sika Madu. Dutifully upholding vampire law to this day, Urd remains open to Krul's words, acknowledging that human factions such as the Japanese Imperial Demon Army are gaining prominence by undertaking forbidden experiments, while vampires have not changed. Noting that the First is awakening, Urd comes into conflict with Saitō.
With efficiency, Urd wastes no time shaping the aftermath of a major conflict in Shibuya, which involves the First, humanity's armed forces, and Saitō's Hyakuya Sect. Able to act freely due to the exhaustion of those factions and his own power, Urd leads the Progenitor Council vampires in capturing the leaders of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army. Upon hearing Saitō's plan, Urd follows his direction to capture Shikama Doji.
Appearance
He has the appearance of a young man with notably tanned skin compared to other characters. Being a vampire Urd has the characteristic pointed fangs. His shiny, golden-blond hair is styled in a neat manner. Parted over his forehead so his vampire-red eyes are visible, Urd has a section of hair in the middle, and on either side of his head in-front of his vampire pointed ears. Upon his left ear, he has a golden adornment consisting of two clasps upon the upper and lower shells, which are connected by a thin chain. From the lower cuff hangs a tapered charm. Based on them not being seen in the past, Urd's ear piercings are more recent.
His attire consists of a dark sleeveless vest featuring six buttons. This is worn over a white collared dress shirt of which the long-sleeves can be viewed. The pants are the same color as his vest. Urd occasionally dons a formal-styled mackintosh with a high collar. He wears black gloves and a decorated neck tie. In the past Urd wore clothing more in keeping with the time period. A white tunic was worn loose over Urd's frame, that had a black belt around his waist. At a later point in time, a similar tunic option was chosen. Again it featured a black belt, where a long-sleeved shirt was worn underneath. Urd's dark colored sword sheath has consistently been held on his left hip.
Personality
Serious in virtually all matters, Urd is shown to possess a cool, nonchalant attitude. He claims to dislike unnecessary fuss, as displayed in past memories of him alongside Rigr. Similarly upon finding Lest Karr nearby Urd wondered what he was doing here. Speaking directly he orders Ferid to reach the point when there are troubling circumstances at hand. Growing tired of Ferid speaking at a later point, Urd commands Lest Karr to silence him. Sentencing them swiftly without a second thought, Urd spoke how Krul and Ferid had best have an interesting story to tell once their sunlight exposure torture was over.
He also displays a superior side as he constantly reprimands Lest about his words and place and refers to Ferid and Crowley as 'lesser vampires'. In fighting Crowley he took the moment to state how it would be easy to break through his sword. He also seems to believe that vampirism is a revolution for humans, as shown by his interaction with the recently turned Ashera.
“ | Do not fear. As of now, you have shed your humanity. You have been permitted to become a superior being that surpasses humans. | ” |
–Alleviating Ashera's concerns after he is transformed into a vampire and his view on their state. Chapter 79: "Eternal Hell", page 23 |
Having a very strong sense of responsibility is useful being the King of Russia. Although vampires have divided themselves up into factions and generally keep to their own devices, Urd does not dismiss foreign affairs as outside his concern. Not only would he travel with an army of nobles, Urd personally sets out to reclaim a city lost to human forces.
Urd appears to be a strict follower of the rules laid out for the vampires. He has no initiative to stray from his path as a second progenitor, even when Saitō states the position to be boring and foolish.
Though harsh, Urd is also shown to possess fair judgement, displaying a quite reasonable and even somewhat merciful side when dealing with events that do not require serious handling and apparently being more inclined to non-lethal punishments instead of just instantly killing guilty vampires. He withholds blame towards Lest for being unable to stop Saitō, acknowledging his weaker position as a Third Progenitor. Even though he dislikes Ferid, he does not let that get in the way of his reasoning side, showing him some mercy by ordering Lest to return Ferid's heart to stop him from becoming a demon and later on giving Ferid and Crowley a chance of survival, presenting them with the option of surrender and facing judgement from the Progenitor Council, rather than death by him (he only resorts to attacking them after Ferid's challenge).
Unlike most other vampires, Urd is shown to consider the wellbeing of the humans under his rule. Human children in Russia are allowed to wear normal clothes and run around with no restriction, where they also appear quite happy.[3] Likewise, Urd values humans more than others of his kind, and stated to often be found observing humans for entertainment purposes. Watching the humans perform ballet is also an indication of an interest Urd has that does not concern blood, where that often occupies a vampire's focus.[4]
Although fast to respond, and acting decisively in the moment, Urd has an indifference for follow-up actions. After rapidly engaging Saito, there was no inclination to pursue him. Sentencing Krul and Ferid was done on the spot and carried out. When Ferid was freed, Urd seemingly thought nothing on this, neither for the group who were capable of freeing him. For all his willingness to kill Ferid when he found him in Shibuya, he allowed him to escape. Despite vowing to destroy the city of Shibuya, as with other scenarios Urd gives it no further thought once another matter arises. Promptly making up his mind that eliminating Yu was the safest and easiest option given that the First was targeted for attempting resurrection, Urd instantly sets about trying to eliminate him. His attempt thwarted, Urd returns to silently observing, all his intent to administer swift action gone.
History
Urd's history is largely unknown. At some point in the ancient past, Urd was a human sat in a prison cell along with Rigr. Together they were found by Sika Madu and offered eternal life.[5] When he was still human, Urd is seen in a meeting with Sika accompanied by Yu in his chambers, watching on as Saitō appears to be talking enthusiastically.[6] Urd was sired at about the same time as fellow Second Progenitor Saitō.
Along with Saitō he awaits for Ashera to wake up after being reborn as a vampire. Speaking to Rigr and reminding him that he does not like unnecessary fuss, Urd then tells Ashera to not fear, as he has shed his humanity and surpassed humans by becoming a vampire. After Ashera starts to become thirsty and begins craving blood, Urd agrees with Rigr that they will have to help him get used to it before suggesting they go above.[7] One thousand years ago Urd was there alongside Saitō and Krul when Sika Madu left with Ashera.
After the First Progenitor left, Urd assumed command over the Progenitor Council as the strongest vampire active. He was intent on keeping the peace and stability of vampires and ensure the rules remained unbroken. In a secluded castle within a mountainous region of Romania Urd asked Rigr whether he was leaving. With no response Urd assumed it was to chase the First and asked what Rigr thought he could do. Questioned what he thought could be done by staying, Urd announced he would uphold the laws of vampire society.
“ | I will uphold the laws... ...of vampire society. | ” |
–Making a vow in Romania, one that would be upheld since then. Chapter 105 "Saito and Urd", page 16 |
Ignoring Rigr's comments on how he was willing to do that for thousands of years without any hope of reward, and how the First had abandoned vampire society, Urd raised how now Rigr would abandon them as well. Told that was not the case, Urd stated it was the same thing. Only the two of them remain in the world. Asked whether he would miss him, Urd responded if he said yes would Rigr stay. When the answer was no, Urd decided he would just have to kill him.[8]
Grasping his sword, Urd stated the penalty for breaking their laws is death. When Rigr felt the vampire utopia they wanted to build was just an illusion Urd ordered silence and questioned who he was to decide it was mere illusion. Not answering who he was to decide it was real, after Rigr commented that their parent has left them, Urd asked whether he saw that as a reason to leave too. Upon hearing that he himself was staying and could protect everyone, Urd told Rigr to not dare. With Rigr saying he was sorry, Urd replied like hell he is and shouted that he refused to allow him to leave. Drawing his sword, Urd swung at Rigr. Detailing that he would cut off his arms and legs if he had to, Urd dictated that Rigr would stay.[9]
Their clash destroyed rock structures as Urd continued to assail Rigr. Refusing to stop, Urd said Rigr would pay for this, and that he has never lost to him, not even once. Appearing surprised at Rigr darting to new positions, Urd had both his arms cut off mid-air and fell to the ground. As he lied bleeding from his wounds Urd absorbed that since he looked slightly pleased with himself when he would win, Rigr had liked that so held back every time, so had a realization that Rigr was pretending to lose in their previous battles. When Rigr added that he did not intend to hurt him, Urd paused before speaking, and again when Rigr said he was off. Urd voiced that he never cared if Rigr hurt him, but with him gone who is left that could leave a scratch on himself. With his parent, and now his brother gone Urd questioned what was left for him in this world, also what was he to do with this undying body of his.
“ | With my parent... ...and now my brother gone... what's left for me in this world? What am I to do with this undying body of mine? | ” |
–After Sika Madu and then Rigr departing Urd had questions for the latter. Chapter 105 "Saito and Urd", page 27 |
Finally, Urd added that if Rigr went he would hate him forever.[10]
At some point Urd had evidently taken an interest in Moscow. In Winter during the thirteenth century, Urd stood alone studying a building. Turning to Ky Luc who was set on assailing him, Urd promptly struck him into the wall.[11]
Overlooking him, Urd questioned why Ky Luc had repeatedly attacked him across the last century. Urd was curious at what meaning could there possibly be in that. After Ky Luc detailed that beating him would show he had become stronger, Urd asked again what the point was. Urd began to explain what vampire strength was determined by.
When Ky Luc mentioned that vampire strength was determined by who made one a vampire and how long they have been one, Urd affirmed that was correct. Urd began to say that consequently there was no possibility of Ky Luc ever beating him.[12]
For Ky Luc's question of why bother living if one is not becoming stronger, Urd regarded him with a fixed look. For the point of living, Urd lowered himself to Ky Luc's level. Urd questioned whether Ky Luc had a reason to keep on living despite being a vampire.[13]
It was reflected that vampires do not sleep, eat, or lust. They are shallow, empty, bloodsucking beasts who have been around for so long they have forgotten why they still live. At least, they are supposed to be. In an underground vampire city, Urd sat opposite Ky Luc at a long table. Urd sat in silence as Ky Luc addressed how blood was not drank directly from humans anymore. It was also said how Urd was the one who built some kind of blood cultivation system that uses humans.[14]
Not answering why he would do that, Urd continued to listen as Ky Luc detailed how he was the one who set all the laws that govern the vampire cities too. After Ky Luc felt those rules were to help vampires not hinder them, Urd confirmed as much when he at last spoke to say if Ky Luc understood all that then he should obey those laws. Mentioning for Ky Luc to observe the hierarchy as well, Urd added for Ky Luc to stop attacking him.[15]
Questioned by Ky Luc why bother living without a reason, Urd recalled that he asked that question of him first. Urd enquired why did Ky Luc cling to the idea of growing stronger. His gaze narrowed as he examined whether Ky Luc still had his desires from when he were human. Once Ky Luc spoke of his uncertainty of whether humans let alone vampires had a reason for living, and that he did not have one, Urd continued the conversation for the first time in asking if that was so.[16]
When Ky Luc raised if there was any meaning to humans being alive, Urd returned to his silence yet continued listening. Questioning who told Ky Luc to get strong and not die, Urd learns then it was his mother. Speaking if that is why Ky Luc has lived as he has for a thousand years, Urd's view was that Ky Luc's mother cast a potent curse on him, given his behaviour.
Once Ky Luc commenced an attack on him unexpectedly, Urd nonchalantly commented how it was again with this. Avoiding Ky Luc's strike with barely any exertion, Urd then observed that he had moved to the side.[17]
Seeing that Ky Luc was attacking from a different angle, Urd thought how he has improved from before. Physically countering Ky Luc's claim that he had got him, Urd was on his feet as he struck Ky Luc upwards. Urd has also sliced Ky Luc in half.[18]
Watching him land, Urd approached Ky Luc to praise him. Stating that was not half bad, Urd mentioned how Ky Luc almost reached him. When Ky Luc was in awe of this news, Urd commented how unusual it was. Urd said that Ky Luc was only the second vampire he met who had not lost sight of themselves.[19]
“ | How unusual. You're only the second vampire I've met who hasn't lost sight of themselves. | ” |
–Sharing that Ky Luc was one of two vampires who retained goals. Chapter 142: "What's the Point?" Page 9 |
As for who the other one was, Urd did not answer but seemingly gave some thought to it. When Ky Luc had questions of whether they were powerful, where they were, and whether he wanted him to kill this other vampire, Urd disappeared into his thoughts. Urd's perspective is inferred in Ky Luc's mind where it was felt that it was the first time he saw a vampire look truly sad.
Evidently not having spoken further on that matter, Urd took to meeting with other vampires in an underground city that was being built. He did not seem to mind that Ky Luc followed him wherever he went. It aooeared that Urd had a hand in updates taking place at the time.[20]
For one hundred years, and five hundred, Urd's activities are known from Ky Luc's account of them. Over that duration, it is said that Urd never said a thing and only simply focused on building the vampire cities.[21]
By the eighteenth century, Urd was above ground in Europe. Mingling among what seemed to be upper-class humans, Urd was wearing his attire that he would have henceforth. Not seen speaking to humans as they passed by in the street he was in, Urd then noticed Ky Luc manifest his weapon. Instructing Ky Luc to not draw human attention to himself, Urd was unbothered in stating that dealing with the result is an annoyance he does not need.
After Ky Luc said if he killed all the humans there would not be any witnesses, and today he would finally make him draw his blade, Urd dismissed the idea. Speaking that it was pointless, Urd turned to the matter of why did Ky Luc keep following him. Unsure what to make of Ky Luc saying it was because he respected him, after Ky Luc added that he wanted him to acknowledge his strength, Urd responded it was as he said, it was pointless.[22]
When Ky Luc flung a child towards a wall, Urd intervened to rescue the youth. He is in Ky Luc's mind since Urd was the one who laid down the law that humans were not to be unnecessarily harmed. Urd stood stationary before the child and made no attempt to even evade Ky Luc's attack from behind, even with his sword millimetres from his head.
Asked why he did not dodge, Urd answered that it was because there were too many people, and because Ky Luc always follows the laws he sets. Urd said he had faith in Ky Luc. As Ky Luc accepted that he would never reveal his reason for living but he supported him anyway, Urd divulged that he did have a dream. Urd awaited as Ky Luc registered this.[23]
Story
Events of 2020
Post-Nagoya Arc
Urd is in Moscow, Russia sitting in the Bolshoi Theatre where he watches a ballet performed by humans. As Lest Karr enters and casually converses with Urd about his inclination for watching theatre, the second progenitor, dismissive of his question, asks him why he is in Russia. Stating that his territory is in Germany, Urd says for Lest Karr to return. Not replying to what he says about having nothing to do in Germany since his ruling is firm, Urd is also spoken to by Lest Karr on how Krul is not fairing as well in her rule over Japan.
Questioned if he had received the news yet, before Urd could hear the details about the events unfolding in Japan, another vampire bursts into the room. Informed that the humans in Japan have experimented on the Seraph of the End once again, hearing about the experiment, Urd wonders aloud what Krul was doing. When Lest casually remarks that Krul has many responsibilities and tries to imply that he himself would have fared better, Urd abruptly silences him. Urd is updated by the unnamed vampire that the Progenitor Council has opened for a meeting from Japan over the situation.[24]
“ | ...The Seraph of the End? What has Krul Tepes been doing? | ” |
–Informed of activities across the world in Japan. Chapter 42: "Sanguinem's End" |
Along with Lest Karr he heads towards St. Basil's Cathedral; children are seen running around freely while wearing normal clothing, in stark contrast to the uniformed children in Japan. As Lest Karr notices this and comments that the humans are pleased, Urd is commended for even allowing his humans a level of culture. Praised for being a shining example for vampires by creating villages like these, Urd wonders if Lest Karr is being sarcastic.
Inside St. Basil's Cathedral, Urd calls for contact to Kyoto, Sanguinem with the other progenitors present on-screen. As the live feed loads for Kyoto, they are shocked by the sight of Krul Tepes, who appears beaten and bound to her throne. When Ferid Bathory pops up on the screen in a joyful, playful manner, Urd acknowledges his presence in exasperation. Apologized to by the seventh progenitor for the urgent call, Urd listens as another member of the council, Third Progenitor Nix Parthe expresses his outrage that Ferid - a non high-ranked progenitor - is calling them.
When Ferid is given the chance to reveal his message, Urd and the rest of the progenitors are alerted to the events that have occurred in Japan. Crowley Eusford, along with Chess Belle, and Horn Skuld speak up, so Urd tells them to get to the point. Urd learns of Krul's betrayal, specifically of her involvement with the humans' experimentation on the Seraph of the End. The Council expresses shock and disbelief at the news. As Ferid continues, Urd learns that the experiment has been completed and the seraph has been weaponized by the humans. Hearing Ferid speak how he and Crowley managed to subdue Krul and call her out as a traitor, risking their own lives in doing so, Urd and the other Progenitors hear that the vampires are now weak and powerless against the power the humans now possess.
Suddenly from outside, the humans invade Sanguinem and on-screen, they blow in the wall behind Ferid. Vampire guards Lacus Welt and René Simm run in on the meeting with the warning that the humans are coming to the palace and that Ferid must flee. The city clearly under heavy attack, Urd and the council members are asked for permission to flee Japan. After Ferid states he shall send them Krul too, Urd murmurs the country's name as a last word.
Osaka Arc
Urd and Lest Karr appear on a ship headed for Osaka Bay to meet with Ferid. Asked by Lest Karr if they will first retake Kyoto, Urd only mutters the country's name and wonders if "he" will be there. He and Lest Karr, with the company of other European vampires, soon arrive and are present when Ferid arrives via bus with Crowley and the Shinoa Squad.
Stood by as Lest Karr engages, Urd watches as he pushes Ferid's heart out of his chest, who has questions on Krul's whereabouts. Ordering Lest Karr to return it before Ferid transforms into a demon, after he drinks blood from Kimizuki, Urd asks who the humans are to hear that they are his toys.
Detecting the scent of blood, with Lest Karr noting its sudden disappearance a second later, realizing Krul's location, Urd rushes over to Ferid's mansion by himself. Crashing through the door, Urd instantly collides with Saitō there, who he calls Rigr Stafford. Commenting that Saitō has gotten slower, Urd cuts off his arm. Surprised by the chains attached to Saitō's arm, Urd pulls one out of his neck as curse marks begin to appear. Questioning Saitō about the chains, Urd learns that it is a curse made by the humans. Realizing that Saito is not a vampire anymore, Urd is asked how much longer he will continue to live as one.
After discussing how the First Progenitor abandoned them, Urd is ordered by Saitō to leave Japan with the reason it is to be his playground. Refusing the direction, Urd has Krul thrown into him as Saitō attempts to flee, where Lest Karr arrives. Urd yells for Lest to stop Saitō, but Lest is quickly cut in half by the latter. Deciding that chasing Saitō to be futile by now, Urd says for Lest Karr to not to blame himself for being unable to apprehend a second progenitor.
Returning to Osaka Bay holding Krul by the neck, Urd is followed by Lest Karr who is dragging Ferid by his hair. Ordering Lest Karr to silence Ferid's mocking pleas, Urd announces that both traitors have been captured. Without delay, Urd sentences Ferid and Krul to torture by exposure. Telling them both that they will be exposed to sunlight for ten days, Urd tasks Fifth Progenitor Ky Luc with overseeing their punishment.
Assuring Ky Luc that the pair will be restrained, Urd then states that if Saito is pulling the strings, the two will not know anything. Justifying the torture as punishment for letting humans invade Sanguinem, Urd then declares that he will go there to take control once more. Before doing so, Urd warns Krul and Ferid that upon his return in ten days, if they do not have an interesting story to tell, their sentence will be changed to eternal torment.
“ | You allowed Sanguinem to fall into human hands. Such gross incompetence must be punished. The rest of us will now go there and clean up the mess you allowed to happen. We will return in ten days. If you do not have a very interesting story to tell me then, your sentence will be transmuted from exposure to eternal torment. | ” |
–Sharing his directives to Ferid Bathory and Krul Tepes. Chapter 51: "Crucifying the Immortal" |
It is likely Urd would have learned from Ky Luc that Ferid had been rescued by the joint efforts of Guren and Shinoa squad, where Yu was partially active as a seraph. His reaction, if any, to his sentence being halted and his prisoner freed is unknown. In Kyoto, Urd along with Lest Karr and Ky Luc feel the presence of the First Progenitor. He says that they will be going to Tokyo.
Shibuya Arc
Transported all together on one helicopter amongst a squadron, Urd along with Lest Karr, with Krul and Ky Luc sense the awakening of the First once again. As the others talk, Urd orders silence, having detected a noise. Opening the door to their transport, Urd alone has heard and noticed the vast number of missiles coming straight for them. He coolly states that they are under attack and that the helicopters will crash. Calling upon his sword, Urd is able to hold onto the side of his helicopter and send streaks off his weapon to destroy multiple explosives.[25]
Concluding that there are too many, Urd leaps from the aircraft before the missiles make contact and stabs into another nearby chopper to hold himself there. Surveying the fiery wreckage crashing downwards, Urd wonders aloud how many were allowed to die. If the missile attack was enough to end his companions, Urd wistfully remarks on how lucky death would be. He sees that the attack was not enough after all as Ky Luc joins him on the side of the helicopter. Disregarding Ky Luc's joy at having fun and not dying, Urd asks about the others. Being informed that Lest Karr had fallen and Krul's whereabouts were unknown, Urd wonders who ordered the assault.[26]
A second round of missiles is incoming, and the remaining helicopters can only be abandoned. Urd effortlessly bounds across the missiles as he deduces that the First would not concern himself with them, and that it must have been Rigr behind the attack.[27]
“ | The first would never bother to concern himself with us. The one who did this... ...must be you... Rigr. | ” |
–His aircraft blown out the sky, Urd has Saito in mind. Chapter 76: "Age of Immortals", page 28-29 |
He thinks back to a time when Rigr was speaking to the First with Yu nearby.[28] Landing on the ground, Urd contemplates that Rigr's efforts are wasted then affirms that the First would never bother himself to look at them, let alone respect them. Paying no heed to Lest Karr, who has survived and asked if he is all right, Urd suspects Rigr may be looking for an excuse to die.[29]
Post-Shibuya Arc
Having found Saitō badly wounded and being attacked by Ferid in Shibuya, Urd joins them in the alleyway with Ky Luc and Lest Karr, and asks whether his brother wants help.[30] Saying for Rigr to look at himself, Urd brings up his warnings against him turning Ferid into a vampire. Checking again if Rigr wants his help, it is accepted and Urd immediately assails Ferid and Crowley.[31]
Bringing his sword down on Crowley's, he states that the lesser vampires have certainly had their fun. Sharing that he deliberately held back on his strike, Urd states he could easily slice both Crowley's sword and him in half. Instructing them to lay down their weapons and be detained, Urd offers them the chance to give up. Through this decision, their punishment for disrupting the order of vampire society will be decided by the Progenitor Council.
“ | Give up. Lay down your weapons and we shall detain you. Your punishment for disrupting the order of vampire society will be decided by the progenitor council. | ” |
–Offering Crowley and Ferid a chance to surrender. Black Demon Scenario"Chapter 92: "Black Demon Scenario", page 4 |
The offer is declined, and Urd simply tells Ferid to die as his sword drinks his blood with winding, thorny vines. Cutting Ferid in half, Urd kicks both Crowley and Ferid's upper torso into the air.[32]
Turning his attention to Saitō, Urd tells him that his games are over and is it time he did the job he should have done a millennium ago. Urd states that Saitō's punishment shall be decided later, as the execution of Ferid takes priority. He stands by as Lest Karr and Ky Luc concentrate on keeping Saitō weakened. Heeding Saitō's words on how Ferid - if taken lightly - can be frightening, Urd announces that he has no intention of going easy on him. A larger number of thorns appear to drink more of his blood as Urd condemns the entire city to destruction.[33]
“ | Sword. Drink my blood. My enemy... ...No... ...This entire city must be destroyed. | ” |
–Deciding to destroy Ferid and the city of Shibuya. Chapter 92: "Black Demon Scenario", page 13 |
Seeing a portal opened by Jigenso with Ferid emerging from it with a sinful key, Urd reacts instantly. In decapitating Ferid, he notices too late that the sinful key was being thrown to Crowley, who activates it behind the trio. The effects commencing, Urd shouts for his group to pull back.[34] An ear-piercing sound resounds throughout the city, and Urd remarks that the voice is on a frequency only vampires can hear. With the sinful key's power negated, Urd asks what is happening this time and pays no mind to Crowley and Ferid fleeing the scene.[35]
It is mentioned by a group of vampires that Urd is the one who placed Saitō in a cage that he sits imprisoned in.[36] On whether Urd is mad is discussed by Saitō with Lest Karr, where the latter comments that Urd has never been seen to grow emotional over anyone but Saitō.[37] It is recollected how when he and Saitō lived in Romania, Urd intended to uphold the laws governing vampire society. He attempted to prevent Rigr from leaving before being defeated in a fight.[38] Presently, when Saitō asks what Urd said, Lest Karr replies it was to not tell Saitō anything, not to speak with him at all in fact.[39] According to Saitō, Urd knows why the First took the best third progenitors but left Lest Karr.[40] While he does not hear it, everything that Urd values, Saitō vows to destroy.[41]
Arriving to their location, Urd is carrying the Lieutenant General of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army, Kureto Hīragi and Major General, Shinya Hīragi who lie still under his arms. With signs of a battle, Urd asks Lest Karr and Ky Luc what in the world are they doing. Hearing it was a disaster and that Lord Rigr got out of his cell, Urd interjects that no vampire can escape that prison, that is how he made it.
Determining what the situation is, Urd says for Rigr to stop messing with his subordinates. After Saitō reveals he never escaped, it was a spell tag based illusion, and remains in his unbroken prison, Urd approaches him. Seeing that he is as insufferable as always, Urd then answers Ky Luc's apology for what happened by saying Saitō is of a higher rank than him so he stood no chance. Questioned by Saitō why he is imprisoned, and is he going to slice him to bits, Urd answers if he refuses to tell him what he is up to it may come to that.[42]
Hearing the reminder that he is getting revenge for the First betraying them, Urd adds and in doing so Saitō betrayed him. While Saitō does not mind being killed by him, Urd raises the likelihood that he came here to talk. If he had no business with him, Urd reasons that Saitō would not be here and would have had the cell opened. As Saitō speaks from the heart how he thought about him everyday, Urd cuts that off and presses him to answer his question. Asking what is, no, how far has Saitō's revenge plan advanced, Urd enquires is it going smoothly.[43]
“ | Silence. Answer my question. What is your- No. How far has your revenge plan advanced? Is it going smoothly? | ” |
–Broaching the topic of Saitō's plans for the First. Chapter 106 "I Am Your...", page 18-19 |
Then wondering whether Saitō invested this much time into his revenge, only for it to fail, Urd is invited to join him so they can kill the First. Appearing skeptical, Urd questions how Saitō plans to do that. Possessing hostages already, Urd turns to induce Lest Karr to check Kureto and Shinya, where the demons Raimei and Byakko are of interest for this matter.[44]
Before Saito, who has a pentagram made up of chains above him, Urd questions what in the world is he starting with this. Urd does not comment on the prison, which was made to drain more power the older the vampire it holds.[45] After Sika Madu has been located and attacked with chains, Urd shouts Saito's name as he is struck by a scythe.[46] When Saito calls for support, Urd provides it and removes the scythe from his chest.[47]
After his name is called by Sika Madu,[48] and the First has been seized and captured, Urd waits beside Saito for him to awaken. Speaking how they have awaited his return, Urd addresses Sika Madu as father.[49]
“ | We've awaited your return... ...Father. | ” |
–With Sika Madu in his prison, Urd is beside Saito when speaking to who he calls father. Chapter 108: "Yu's Sword", page 39 |
Viewing the First chained in the prison he made, the line of conversation they would like to discuss involves the beginning of the world, to the reason Sika Madu abandoned them.[50] With Saito and Lest Karr stood near him, Urd listens as the First asks about the number of keys they hold, to speaking how his plan tens of thousands of years in the making has been outdid by someone.[51]
Akihabara Arc
Hearing Saito discuss with Shikama Doji on his plan to bring his son, Mikaela back to life, Urd listens as it is speculated that vampires like him were failures as vessels that were supposed to be strong enough to contain his soul.[52] Hearing that the Emperor's Demons organization was founded by Shikama Doji, and the Hyakuya Sect by Saito, he speaks Rigr's name after he grasps the First by the throat on what are they to do with their eternal lives.
Where Saito feels he is still a part of the First's grand plan, and with Shikama Doji revealed to have blue blood, Urd makes no comment on these developments.[53] Although the First professes they have a mutual interest, after Saito stabs him through the neck with a chain, Urd is affected by Shikama Doji's telepathy. As the First communicates that vampires cannot die, rather they become demons with no will of their own, Urd covers his ears where the voice has a detrimental effect.[54]
Spell tags from Saito nullify Shikama Doji's brainwashing spell, and Urd observes them drifting around him.[55] With the First's goal thought to involve bringing Mikaela back, where it is speculated that seraphs would punish the resurrection attempt, Urd is asked by Saito whether now in fact they should uphold the vow to maintain world order for eternity. Since the world has been destroyed quite enough, there is the consensus to not let the seraphs come and punish it further.[56]
Learning that the price for resurrection is seven sinful keys, and the lives of every last vampire leaves Urd appearing shocked. After Saito reacts to Shikama Doji's words that they ought to be bored of living right now and skewers him with chains, Urd listens to what he calls his selfish request.[57]
Questioning when has Saito not made selfish demands of them, Urd hears the idea that they cannot trust Shikama Doji's words. As something could happen to the world, and with Saito stating they need to stop Mikaela's resurrection where he will also search for a way for them to finally die, Urd regards the offer. Affirming that Saito need not do it alone, Urd places his hand on Saito's after saying that they will protect world order together.
“ | You needn't do it alone. We'll protect world order together. | ” |
–Accepting Saito's plan to not trust the First's words, prevent Mikaela from being resurrected, and stabilize the world. Chapter 114 "Everyone's Goals", page 23 |
Urd's hand is joined by Lest Karr's and Ky Luc's.[58] Transported in the back of a truck of which Shikama Doji has been nailed to the floor, Urd sits with Lest Karr nearby.[59]
Mount Fuji Arc
Having remained in Shibuya, within a building Urd stands by himself in the dark as outside it is Ky Luc who announces to humans there is no interest in them and they can live if they do not resist.[60]
Upon being informed by Lest Karr that Shibuya has completely fallen, Urd raises his right hand. Without a word, Urd heads down the corridor. Walking past cells containing Kureto and Shinya, he keeps his gaze fixed forward.[61]
Reaching a door that slides open for him, Urd finds himself in a huge spacious room. There are defensive sigils inscribed on the ground by the Hyakuya Sect members who are present. As Basteya Irclu requests updates on the progress of these spell circles from Hyakuya Sect members, Urd remains silent and looks to something on his right.[62]
As Basteya discusses with staff how they are preparing a thousand year plan against a god, and for Demon Army researchers to be added to the Hyakuya Sect, Urd listens without speaking to anyone. Once the defensive spells radiate a light upon their completion, Urd stares ahead to the shimmering cage where Shikama Doji is pinned with Saito there.[63]
With Saito intending to look into the First's past to discover what he wants to protect, and what his ultimate goal is, to destroy it, Urd pays attention to the exchange. When Saito kneels and places his hand near Shikama Doji's head, Urd speaks for Rigr to be careful.[64] Urd stands near the bars of the prison observing as Saito within accesses Shikama Doji's memories.[65]
Along with other vampire progenitors, Urd has moved into a large spacious room where Saito by himself sits on a throne. Standing on Saito's right, Urd also has Lest Karr on his other side. Other vampires include Ky Luc and Basteya where collectively they await Yu's arrival. Upon Yu's entry into the room, Urd regards him.[66]
Awaiting as Yu steps closer, Urd's gaze narrows to him after being greeted in a friendly manner. Not responding to Yu claiming he has something he wants to talk to them about, Urd does not react to being spoken to by Ky Luc.[67] He remains inactive as Ky Luc and Lest Karr prepare battle arrangements amongst themselves. Urd is mentioned by Lest Karr who means to protect him.[68]
As Ky Luc set about assailing Yu, he would have witnessed Yu invoke Mikaela to slice off a fifth progenitor's arm. Urd's senses would allow him views to Yu engaging Ky Luc virtually evenly in an extended fight. Stood next to Saito, Urd pays attention to Yu revealing that he has information about how to bring Mikaela back.[69] He is surprised upon hearing Shikama Doji's voices echo Yu's name across the cityscape.[70]
After Saito orders all to not let Yu reach the First, Urd moves out to intercept him. Arriving outside to where Yu had moved, Urd stands near Lest Karr and Saito and regards him before walking closer.[71] Urd holds his position with Basteya there too.[72]
Responding to blackened streaks breaking their way out of the building that Shikama Doji is in, Urd is able to evade them. Ducking to avoid one, it is apparent that the First can attack too even when imprisoned.
Seeing that two of the projectiles are soaring towards Saito's back, Urd calls his name before pushing him out of harm's way. Asked to watch Saito's back, Urd is ready to do so.[73]
Unfazed by Yu in a demonic state heading towards him, Urd focuses on Shikama Doji's darkness. Cutting one of the streaks apart, Urd finds the upper half of his sword has completely melted. Regarding it, Urd speaks for his sword to drink as much of his blood as it must.
Able to reform his weapon, Urd's sword now radiates a light. Aware of what is behind, Urd leaps to slice away the rapidly moving shadows, this time with his strengthened blade intact. Landing, Urd finds that many floating black orbs have formed. Damning it, Urd says to Rigr that this might be difficult if they do not destroy the original first.[74]
“ | Damn. Rigr! This might be difficult if we don't destroy the original first! | ” |
–Finding the many black orbs around them, and feeling there is a means of dealing with them. Chapter 135: "Front Seats to the End" Page 27 |
Where Yu has formed blackened wings with Mika's help, Urd is called upon to stop him by Saito. His hand dripping with blood from feeding the weapon, Urd casts out a seismic ranged strike form his blade. Calmly informing Saito that it won't be unharmed, Urd adds in fact if they cannot control Yu then it is better to kill him anyway.[75]
“ | It won't be unharmed, Rigr. In fact... ...If we cannot control him, better to kill him anyway. | ” |
–After firing a ranged strike towards Yu where Urd has his own plan to prevent him reaching Shikama Doji. Chapter 135: "Front Seats to the End" Page 29 |
Shouted at by Saito to not let Yu get anywhere near the First, the power Urd generates blasts into the sky. Readying it, Urd calmly speaks for his sword before shouting for it to sweep clean the skies. The First is also included in this.[76]
“ | Sweep clean the skies! The First and all! | ” |
–Announcing his intent as he readies a power that blasts into the sky. Chapter 136: "The Godtouched" Page 5 |
Likely unknown to him, but Urd's attack is discussed by Yu and Mika in their sphere. Not mentioned by name, it is noted that he is clearly trying to kill Yu and Mika. The power from Urd's sword forms a column of light, and when it collides with Mika's sword it causes cracks to appear in it. Urd's name is spoken by Ferid where his attack is observed by him.[77]
Upfront that he has no qualms about vanquishing Yu and even the First, the collateral from his charged attack has unintentionally broken the walls of the building that Shinya and Kureto are imprisoned in. The emission travels across the cityscape, breaking buildings in its wake.[78] If he was aware of this, Urd's view on himself being the reason why Shinya and Kureto could escape is not shared. After the emission from his attack has surged across the cityscape, for all his swift readiness to emit his tremendous power, Urd was unsuccessful in preventing Yu from freeing Shikama Doji.
Where Shikama Doji anticipates his arrival, Urd's name is mentioned[79] and factors into why the First promptly shares the method to resurrect Mikaela, then the method to hide the world from paradise, and the method to destroy paradise to Yu. Despite that, Urd does not waver in his commitment and lands atop the building where Yu and Mika are with the other vampire progenitors.[80]
Atop the building, Urd glowers at Yu and Mika. After Saito questions where the First went and Yu replies he was taken away by enemy humans, Urd silently considers his response. Urd listens as Lest Karr raises the question of Yu having human enemies when he is human too.[81]
Listening as Saito assumes Yu is referring to Guren Ichinose and Mahiru Hiragi, he hears Yu mention his own hunger. Ever observing as Ky Luc lifts Yu of his feet, Urd comes to share his thoughts. Speaking that he does not trust Yu, his question is how do they know that he did not absorb the First into himself.[82]
“ | I don't trust you. How do we know you didn't absorb the First into yourself? | ” |
–Disbelieving Yu's claim that an enemy human took the First's power. Chapter 139: "Two Monsters" Page 33 |
After Yu triumphantly proclaims his goal is to save everybody in the world including the First, where all the other vampires have a look of bewilderment, Urd alone looks ahead expressionless. Urd as part of the vampire group there is asked by Yu for his help.[83]
In a meeting room, Urd sits at Saito's side as they observe Yu eating at the other end of the table while being attended to by two maids. Speaking to Rigr to ask what this is about, Urd then questions why he is allowing this. Urd hears Saito say they do not have the full picture yet, and that Yu is not attempting to escape. Glancing to Yu who continues eating, Urd supposes that is true.
For how Yu is eating, Urd asks Saito if he ever ate like that when he was human.[84] While Saito does not remember, Urd has another question. Urd asks Saito whether he thinks that vision he saw in the First's mind was true.
“ | Rigr. Do you think that vision you saw in the First's mind was true? | ” |
–Aware of Shikama Doji's background. Chapter 140: "The World I Want" Page 3 |
Without a response, Urd wonders if Saito truly believes that the First did not leave them instead acted to save them. Where Saito is ever pensive, Urd raises how after all this time there was the one he wanted revenge on. Once Saito claims all he wanted was to reach the First, he raises what now that he has. Urd's expression is serious when Saito mentions that the First never told them much of anything. Speaking that it is just as Saito does not tell them anything, Urd states that he and the First are much alike.[85]
Urd listens as Yu reveals to Saito that he and Mika gained around thirty percent of the First's power while someone else absorbed the majority, and that they are analyzing memories. When the Three Spells Yu received from the First are generated, Urd is more concerned with what Saito makes of the news after Yu reveals he knows Saito also saw the First's memories.[86]
It is when Yu speaks of saving all the worlds does Urd speak. Urd asks Yu does that include reviving the angels.[87] He does not comment on the First being punished by God for attempting resurrection, neither the spell to hide the world from Paradise or the spell to destroy it that Yu points out. For the spell to revive Mikaela, he would know that he was infused with enough light to revive all the angels.
Ever listening as Yu speaks to Saito how he and Mika found out what the First did wrong in his resurrection attempts, Urd is referred to by Mika on the risks of making promises with him and Saito.[88] Details of Saito founding the Hyakuya Sect to resist the Japanese Imperial Demon Army that the First created are discussed which Urd would hear, as is the creation of the Hyakuya Orphanage by him.
Not sharing a view on Yu feeling that Saito has the smarts to outdo Guren and Mahiru, he seems to be standing as the three spells radiate above him. Looking to them, Urd observes as Yu requests help in researching these spells.[89]
On his feet to share he is against this, Urd has his perspective on everything heard to be shown. Urd feels there is a much safer and easier option right in front of them. Speaking of the matter of returning to paradise and reviving the angels despite it breaking taboo, Urd's view is that the First's failures already showed them what happened when trying those.
“ | I'm against this. There's a much safer, easier option right in front of us. Returning to paradise. Reviving the angels despite it breaking taboo. The First's failures already showed us what happens when trying those. | ” |
–Opposing then taking up Shikama Doji's goal of resurrecting others. Chapter 140: "The World I Want" Page 17 |
Having made up his mind, Urd glances to Yu while calmly stating in which case. Taking action without a further word, Urd leaps on the table while readying his sword with Yu in his sight. His weapon restrained by Saito's chain, Urd's intent is hindered.
Looking to him, Urd commands Rigr to let him go. When Saito declines to, Urd remains on the table with his sword bound. Urd questions Saito why repeat past mistakes.[90]
Hearing Saito out that the First may have made mistakes but they have not, Urd hears that simply wasting days until eternity ends would make them nothing more than vampires. Pausing for thought, Urd says to Saito that he does not want what happened to the First to happen to him. Urd feels that Saito is one step away from the point of no return.
After Saito raises is that not what it means to live, Urd is questioned if he has not been around so long he has forgotten. Gritting his teeth, Urd states he will not accept that logic.[91]
Angered, Urd shouts that Saito left them and dumped the duty of maintaining the world's balance on them. With that, Urd states so they did, the whole time Saito was gone. Told good job, Urd finds Saito's chain around his sword loosened.
Swinging his freed sword at him, Urd keeps the weapon tip pointed at Saito's throat. When Saito requests his help in saving all the worlds, Urd asserts that he is always too selfish.[92]
After Saito turns to Yu, with the accusation that he may be the First, once Yu has expressed his satisfaction since he is under the impression they have agreed to help him, having missed Saito's threat entirely, Urd can only regard him as a peculiarity. His name is spoken by Yu who is ready for them to save all the worlds. For Yu's exuberance, Saito looks to Saito's response for what they are to do.[93]
Urd is referred to by Guren as one of the second progenitors when he is reminding Ferid that if he does not kill Ky Luc then they will notice how strong he is now.[94] For Urd's senses, it seems the case that he has indeed not noticed that Ferid has consumed Krul and is bolstering his own powers, and is battling Ky Luc. He is mentioned when Ferid is telling Mahiru that Ky Luc has always been second progenitor Urd Geales's favorite.[95] That Ferid is felt to be an obstruction to Lord Urd is a reason for Ky Luc meaning to deny him whatever victory he is after.[96] Further, that Urd should know that Ferid has gotten stronger is the reason why Ky Luc retreats from battle.[97] Urd would not learn these details Ky Luc had since he was captured by Shinoa Squad.
Powers and Abilities
Natural abilities
As one of only two second progenitors, Urd possesses strength greater than that of his fellow second progenitor, Rigr Stafford, having consistently defeated him in spars and only losing their last match due to recklessness. As the current leader of the Progenitor Council, Urd is the second strongest vampire in existence, surpassed only by Sika Madu, and is the strongest active vampire. His highest rank in the council makes him significantly stronger than those of lower rank, including third progenitors Krul Tepes and Lest Karr. He has displayed feats that far surpass Lest's abilities, such as fighting on par with Saitō, who effectively bisected Lest in an instant. He was also able to effortlessly restrain Krul. Urd is even stronger than the other second progenitor to a certain extent, having always defeated him in the past, though neither of them took their encounters seriously. Their last fight ended in Urd's defeat due to his emotions getting the better of him, and Saitō catching him by surprise when he revealed he was holding back. Even with his modifications, Urd proved capable of effectively handling Rigr, who opted to flee rather than continue the battle, admitting he feared Urd's interference. Additionally, Urd was fully capable of killing Ferid Bathory and Crowley Eusford, effortlessly pressuring them while greatly holding back.
Urd possesses a keener sense of smell than any other vampire, able to pinpoint Krul's location from a mere cut far sooner than Lest Karr. He has superior hearing, as he was the first and only member in the helicopters to discern Saitō's attack. Upon the 6th Trumpet's defeat, Urd immediately noticed the shift in the "color" of the world, demonstrating that his senses are so advanced he could easily detect the global change caused by the Seraph's defeat, even while miles underground in Sanguinem. He is completely unaffected by an illusion spell that managed to trick even Lest and Luc, showcasing his incredible ability to perceive distorted reality.
His speed and agility are very remarkable, allowing him to cover great distances and perform high jumps with ease. He effortlessly reached Ferid's mansion in mere moments and dodged missiles mid-air. His strength is tremendous; simply clashing with Saitō created a crater, and he can overpower vampires on the level of third and seventh progenitors with a single hand. For instance, he nonchalantly dragged Krul with one hand despite her active resistance and while greatly holding back. He casually pressured Ferid and Crowley in a sword lock, easily capable of cutting them and their swords in half if he wished.
Urd displays great swordsmanship with his first-class vampire sword, skillfully attacking Saitō with swift slashes and cuts, managing to slice off his arm and deflecting most of the chains fired by the amputated arm. He has always defeated Rigr in sword fights. Urd is also pragmatic; upon sensing something odd inside the chain that stabbed him in the neck, he quickly composed himself and removed it.
Urd is remarkably intelligent and knowledgeable, with centuries of experience. He is an exceptional leader, commanding the entire Progenitor Council and earning respect from even the arrogant Lest Karr and Ky Luc. Lest Karr has commented that Urd's leadership is considered a model for other vampire lords. He seems to possess noteworthy scientific and magical acumen, having successfully crafted a a prison capable of binding any vampire, no matter how powerful, designed to restrain them more the older and stronger they are, specifically made to imprison Saitō.
Equipment
A first-class vampire sword is wielded with one hand. Swinging the blade can cast off ranged strikes that can cut into the metal of explosives and cause them to detonate. With Urd's strength he seems confident that his sword can break another vampire noble's weapon. Many thorned vines can emerge from the weapon to draw upon Urd's blood to power the weapon further. In the event the weapon is outright melted, Urd displays the ability to reform it by using his blood. After being reformed it is also empowered to cut through projectiles from the First that initially melted the blade.
