"Hyperion Heights" is the first episode of Season Seven of ABC's Once Upon a Time. It was written by Edward Kitsis & Adam Horowitz, and directed by Ralph Hemecker. It is the one hundred and thirty-fourth episode of the series overall and premiered on October 6, 2017.
Synopsis
Henry leaves Storybrooke in search of his own story. Years later in another realm, he encounters a troubled Cinderella, changing the trajectory of his quest forever. When Cinderella's evil step-mother, Lady Tremaine, poses a threat, Henry discovers that following his heart will require him to make more difficult choices than he ever could have imagined. Years later, a young Lucy finds a disillusioned Henry at his home in Seattle, determined to make him remember his true self in order to defeat the curse afflicting the fairytale characters of "Hyperion Heights."[2]
Recap
With everyone's story now fulfilled, Henry plans on setting out to find his own story by travelling to new realms described in the storybooks found in the Sorcerer's mansion. He explains that he discovered that there's different versions of characters they've already met and know, but that there are no other versions of him. He is unique among all the versions of all the realms and he wants to find his own place among them. Though Regina worries he's too young to be leaving home, he assures her that he will be fine, taking August's motorcycle with him as he uses a magic bean given to him by Tiny as a graduation present to open a portal into another realm.
Years later, as Henry rides through a forest, he narrowly avoids a collision with an oncoming carriage, resulting in the woman inside being thrown to the ground. Realizing he has met this realm's version of Cinderella, he offers her a ride to the ball as an apology. Cinderella, however, knocks him out and takes the motorcycle once she's been shown how it works, with Henry chasing her. At the same time, Lady Tremaine is about to set off for the palace, having clipped the Fairy Godmother's wings and taken her wand. When questioned why she is doing this, she explains to Drizella that magic has no power compared to fear, a point she drives home by destroying the Fairy Godmother.
As Cinderella arrives at the ball, she tries to make her way to the prince, but is confronted by Henry. When pressed about why she stole his bike and a dagger of his, she admits that she had an ulterior motive for coming to the ball; she plans on killing the prince, as vengeance for ruining her family and driving her father to an early death. Henry tries to talk her out of it and gives her a hyacinth flower for luck, telling her that he is returning to his own realm at midnight, and that she could start a new life there. Before he can pursue her any further, however, he blacks out and learns that his drink was drugged by Alice, a mysterious woman ordered by Rumpelstiltskin to keep an eye on Henry. Despite her warnings of the dangers of meddling in someone else's story, Henry chooses to stay and help. As Cinderella meets the prince, she pulls out the dagger, but eventually has a change of heart. Unfortunately, Tremaine takes the opportunity to kill him for turning down Drizella, and frames Cinderella for the murder. As the guards close in, Henry breaks out of his trance and helps Cinderella to escape, reiterating his offer and telling her to meet him where her carriage crashed.
After escaping the palace, Henry returns to the carriage and prepares to open a portal, assuming Cinderella has abandoned the idea. Upon discovering one of her glass slippers, however, he takes it as a sign, and chooses to remain in the new realm to undertake "Operation Glass Slipper".
Henry is now making ends meet as a freelance cab driver, struggling with writer's block after the failure of his book, Once Upon a Time. When Lucy arrives at his apartment, she tells Henry that she is his daughter and that his family needs him, although Henry refuses to believe her and turns her away. The next day, Jacinda, Lucy's mother, shows up late for work at Cluck's Chicken, but quits when calling out her boss for his bad temper. When she returns to her apartment, she tells her roommate, about having quit her job, but is stunned to find that Lucy has snuck out without her knowledge. In Belfrey Tower, Jacinda's stepmother Victoria grows increasingly irritated with what she sees as Jacinda's irresponsibility, and plans on taking full custody of her granddaughter, all while buying out smaller businesses and raising rent to push the cursed inhabitants out of the neighborhood.
Later on, Henry discovers his laptop missing and finds a note to meet at Roni's Bar to get it back from Lucy. After a brief encounter with a woman named Tilly, he goes to Roni's, and is greeted by the eponymous owner, who happens to be Regina with her memories stripped by the curse. Meanwhile, Jacinda finds Lucy at the wishing well in the community garden, who tells her that she found Henry, despite her mother's skepticism. Jacinda then returns the laptop back to Henry, and the two are encouraged by Roni to share a drink. However, Victoria shows up, ready to buy out Roni's bar and to deal with Jacinda, telling her that she'll be taking full custody of Lucy. Henry attempts to defuse the tension between the three, but is warned by Victoria to stay out of her business. Afterwards, Lucy meets him at the garden, and attempts to convince him about the curse, only for Henry to reveal that his wife and child perished in a fire years ago. Finding that his car has been stolen, Henry goes to the nearby police station, and reports it missing to a cursed Killian Jones, who now lives as Officer Rogers with no memories of his past life. In another part of town, Tilly enters an abandoned warehouse to find her boss, Rumpelstiltskin, now living under the cursed identity of Detective Weaver, and informs him of Henry's arrival.
Back at the garden, Lucy is planting seeds around the well, when Jacinda arrives to take her to Bainbridge Island across the sound, so they can be together and escape from Victoria. When they arrive at the town line, Jacinda's car breaks down and the elevator to the docks has been closed, which Lucy believes means they're trapped in Hyperion Heights, much like the residents of Storybrooke were. At the police station, Victoria interrupts Henry and Rogers to ask the officer to help find Lucy and Jacinda, believing that Henry knows something. Victoria's daughter Ivy and Officer Rogers find the pair, who have decided to stay and fight Victoria's claim. As Ivy gives Lucy's Once Upon a Time book to Rogers, and insists that it be thrown away, Rogers catches sight of a specific page featuring a picture of Emma Swan.
Later that night, Victoria returns to Roni's with a contract to have Roni sign over the place. Unfortunately, Roni changes her mind and tells Victoria that she is not selling out. Having been inspired by Jacinda's decision, she tells Victoria that she won't be ordered around by her, and this is just the beginning. At the same time, Rogers examines a picture of Emma Swan in Lucy's book, and learns that his new partner is Detective Weaver. Henry begins work on a new story, and Jacinda returns to her job at Cluck's Chicken. On her way home, Jacinda finds a quarter and uses it to make a wish at the well, causing a hyacinth flower to sprout out of the ground.

An extended version of the scene with Jacinda and Lucy at the Community Gardens. Victoria is standing in the gardens with her daughter Ivy. As she sticks a spade into the ground, she comments about the gardens, referring to them as "dirt," and wants to demolish it to build up condos, which Ivy also supports, saying that all it needs is Victoria's "loving touch." After Jacinda shows up before them, Victoria immediately says that where she's been all day and she lost Lucy again. Ivy mocks Jacinda, saying that she also lost all the mirrors because she looks disaster. Victoria then instructs Ivy to search everywhere to find Lucy, and tells her step-daughter that she has Lucy two days a week, so custody is privilege, not a right. Suddenly, Lucy shows up and gives the impression of not being lost at all but just getting coffee for her grandmother. After Jacinda shows her step-mother Lucy's ballet dress and shoes, Ivy and Victoria walk away, while Lucy runs to the well at the garden.

- The title card features the Seattle skyline.[11]
- The title of this episode was revealed by Adam Horowitz via his Instagram account on June 28, 2017.[12]
- The name "Hyperion" is a shout-out to Disney and the Hyperion studios,[13] Hollywood's Hyperion Avenue, where the two original Animation Buildings of the Disney company were located. They are mainly known for being the place where Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was made. Eventually, in 1939/1940, these buildings were moved to the studio lot in Burbank, where they have been rebuilt and renamed the Shorts Building. The writing office of Once Upon a Time was relocated here shortly before production on Season Seven began.[14]
- Originally, Hyperion is the name of the Titan of the Sun and the Light in Greek mythology.

- RECYCLED CGI SET: The computer-generated set used for the courtyard in the Prince's castle is recycled from the CGI model for the King's castle in the Season One episode "The Price of Gold" and the Season Six episode "The Other Shoe," King Xavier's castle in the Season Two episode "The Miller's Daughter," Prince Eric's castle in the Season Three episode "Ariel," and the Camelot castle in Season Five. This can be seen from the archways[25] and the railing on top of them,[26] which have a very similar design.
- The area around the courtyard stairs is recycled from the CGI model for the Camelot castle in Season Five, and the King's castle in "The Other Shoe." This can be seen from the almost identical design of the windows and the balustrades.[27]
- As he changed the accent of his character during the filming of "A Pirate's Life," Robert Carlyle had to re-record his lines as Weaver from this episode.[28]
- Henry's line to his horse when he is looking for Cinderella after the ball, "You get it," was ad-libbed by Andrew J. West.[13]

Fairytales and Folklore
- This episode is a rendition of Charles Perrault's version of the "Cinderella" fairytale, focusing on Cinderella attending the prince's ball, and the dropped glass slipper. Also featured is the wicked stepmother, one of the evil stepsisters, and the fairy godmother. (In the Brothers Grimm's version of the fairytale, Cinderella is brought a beautiful dress and golden slippers from some birds when she prays under a hazel tree. The fairy godmother and the glass slippers are from the original version by Charles Perrault.)
- Also featured is Alice from the Alice's Adventures in Wonderland story.
- Henry says that there is a French and Italian version of "Snow White." Fairytales similar to "Snow White" are classified as Aarne-Thompson-Uther type 709[33] and are characterized by a young woman's rivalry with her stepmother, who poisons her and puts her into an enchanted sleep. There are several versions of French, Breton and Italian origin.[34]
- The magic bean used by Henry to cross realms is from the story of "Jack and the Beanstalk."
- Belfrey Towers, introduced in this episode, are a reference to Rapunzel's tower from the fairytale Rapunzel," as the owner of the company is Victoria Belfrey, whose New Enchanted Forest counterpart is later revealed to be Rapunzel.
- This episode introduces the show's version of the Fremont Troll statue, which takes the form of a troll under a bridge. This concept is based on the fairytale "Three Billy Goats Gruff."
- Henry jokingly asks Roni if her bar will turn into a pumpkin by midnight, a reference to the Charles Perrault version of the "Cinderella" fairytale, in which the fairy godmother transforms a pumpkin into a golden carriage, but the spell will break at midnight.
- At the ball at the prince's castle, Tiana can be heard saying no thanks when the waiter offers her some frog legs; a reference to the fairytale of "The Frog Prince," where the princess meets a frog who is actually a human prince who was cursed by a spiteful fairy.
- The label on the bottle tied to Alice's neck says "Drink Me,"[35] a reference to the Alice's Adventures in Wonderland story.
- STORYBOOK CONTENT: An excerpt from "The Loveliest Rose in the World," a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, can be seen in Henry's storybook novel when Rogers flips though it.[36] The show's translation is taken from Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales (link to text), translated by Susannah Mary Paull[37] (credited as "Mrs. H. - Swyft, the ride-hailing service that Henry works for, which is introduced in this episode, is a parody of the real-life ride-hailing company Lyft.
- BOOKS AS SET DRESSING: An upside-down copy of the novel The Gemini Contenders (1976) by Robert Ludlum (the creator of the antihero Jason Bourne) is lying on Henry's desk.[39]
- The Eagle Has Landed (1975), the break-through novel of the best-selling British writer Jack Higgins, and a book by Jack Finney (author of the science fiction novel The Body Snatchers, the novel behind the famous 1956 horror film Invasion of the Body Snatchers), are sitting the bookshelf over the desk.[40]
- When Lucy makes a comment about Henry's modest success as a writer, Henry remarks that he didn't exactly write Harry Potter.
- A Scrabble game is lying under the table in Henry's apartment.[41]
- The scene where Victoria enters the Belfrey Towers was inspired by the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada,[13] in which Meryl Streep's Miranda Priestly enters the Runway building in a similar way.
- Rebecca Mader, who plays Zelena on the show, plays Jocelyn, one of Miranda's employees, in the movie.
- Glenn Close's Cruella De Vil has also a similar scene and entrance in the live-action film 101 Dalmatians.
Props Notes
- As Jared S. Gilmore was too young to ride his motorcycle, some crew members had to push the vehicle.[42]
- PAUSE AND READ: One of Henry's pick-up requests in Seattle is for a woman named Susan.[43] The address, however, 4818 Kerege Avenue, is fictional.
- HIDDEN DETAILS: Henry's keychain[44] has the same design as his mother Emma's swan keychain turned necklace.[45] However, it is not the same item as Emma's necklace, since the circular edge on the pendant that Emma wore as a necklace is much thinner than the edge around the pendant on Emma's[46] and Henry's[44] keychains (indicating that Emma removed the outer layer of the pendant when she fashioned it as a necklace).
- REUSED PROPS: The Fairy Godmother's wand[47] is the same prop that was used for the original Fairy Godmother's wand in the Season One episode "The Price of Gold" and the Season Two episodes "Queen of Hearts" and "Lacey."[48] While the handle remains the same, the rest of the wand (which used to be transparent) has been painted in a metallic color.
- REUSED PROPS: The design of the swords used by the Prince's guards[49] are the same swords used by:

- REUSED PROPS: The cup that the Desk Sergeant is drinking from at the police station[55] is the same cup that Emma is drinking hot cocoa from when she first visits Mary Margaret in the Season One episode "The Thing You Love Most."[56] Ingrid drinks hot cocoa from the same cup in in the Minnesota flashback in the Season Four episode "Shattered Sight."[57]
- Emma[58] and Mary Margaret[59] both drink hot cocoa from cups of the same design when they discuss Henry's plan for Mary Margaret and John Doe in the Season One episode "Snow Falls."
- The cup can also be seen sitting on Mary Margaret's kitchen counter in the Season Two episodes "The Crocodile"[60] and "Child of the Moon."[61]
- HIDDEN DETAILS: The flowers that Henry goes to put on his imaginary family's grave[62] are the same as Cinderella's lucky flower, hyacinths.[63]
- STORYBOOK CONTENT: The blurb for Henry's storybook novel is a slightly modified version of a synopsis for the show, which can be found on several online websites. The original synopsis reads thus:[64]

- STORYBOOK CONTENT: The text page next to Emma's illustration in Henry's storybook novel is a retelling of the scene where Emma leaves the Underworld in the Season Five episode "Firebird." Some of the text is seen on-screen,[67] a few more words can be seen in the following episode, "A Pirate's Life,"[68] while the rest of it can be seen on a prop photograph from an online auction[69] (the missing text is set in fuchsia, or, in the case of links, is underlined). It reads:
the ground quaking beneath their feet. In the distance,
the portal in the face of the fallen clock tower was

Henry and Regina through. They were getting out of
this place if it was the last thing she ever did. Emma

armor to protect me from getting hurt by those I
love," Emma told David. "But now it's just a
reminder that I have to protect those I love."

Emma led David through the fading portal. And with
one last look behind her, Emma wiped the tears from
her eyes. She knew what her mission was. And with
she stepped into the clock-faced portal and disap-
peared into the void. The portal was gone, replaced
once again by an ordinary clock face. Then.... tick. It
was 8:15 once again in Storybrooke.
Set Dressing
- PAUSE AND READ: One of the letters on Henry's desk[70] is addressed to a [obscured] W. Walker in Willowdale, Ontario. The street name is Hollyberry Trail, which is indeed a street address in Willowdale.[71]

- The New Enchanted Forest scenes with Henry and Cinderella in the woods were filmed in Vancouver's Stanley Park.[4]
- Columbia Street in New Westminster doubles as Seattle for some of the street scenes in Hyperion Heights.[119] The scene where Tilly jumps from a building onto a dumpster was also filmed in New Westminster.[120]
- Royal Paws Pet Centre at 660 Columbia Street was redressed as Radcliffe Pet Day Spa for the episode.[121] The business can be seen when Jacinda is rushing to work in the morning, but the name is illegible on-screen.[122]
- The City Of New Westminster Downtown Parkade at 384 Columbia Street doubles as the Bainbridge Island Ferry Terminal.[123]
- The scenes at the Community Gardens in Hyperion Heights were filmed in the dog park opposite New Westminster station.[124] The station sign can be glimpsed in the background when Henry rounds the corner.[125]

Goofs
- By the end of the episode, the date of Roni's contract reads June 2018.[128] However, Adam Horowitz and the show itself hinted that the story takes place in October 2017.[31]
