"Wish You Were Here" is the tenth episode of Season Six of ABC's Once Upon a Time. It was written by Edward Kitsis & Adam Horowitz, and directed by Ron Underwood. It is the one hundred and twenty-first episode of the series overall, and premiered on December 4, 2016.
Synopsis
When she learns that our heroes possess a weapon capable of defeating her, the Evil Queen steals Aladdin's magic lamp from Jasmine and makes a wish that could sideline the Savior forever. Unwilling to wake Snow while Emma is missing, David works with Hook and Henry to hold the Evil Queen at bay in Storybrooke as Regina goes on a rogue rescue mission. Meanwhile, Gold and Belle face a surprising danger to their newborn son.[2]
Recap
Emma carries the sword from her vision as she, Regina, and Hook cross the Storybrooke cemetery at night. The latter asks the Mayor if her vault has something to destroy the weapon. She replies that they don't want to end it - they want to understand it. Hook protests that it is fate to kill Emma. They have to figure out who that is. "And then we can worry about destroying things," Regina adds as the trio treks. They stop when they find the Evil Queen kneeling before Robin Hood's grave. An offended Regina screams for her other half to get away from him. The Queen, startled, rises and denies desecrating Robin's final resting place. She "loved" him too, after all.
The Evil Queen believes losing Robin Hood was the best thing that ever happened to them. It pushed Regina to free her from her self-loathing; "To make me the best version of us." The savior begs the angry Regina not to let the Queen get to her. It's too late for that, as Regina states, and conjures a fireball. The Queen vanishes the flame, reminding the Mayor the only way to hurt her is to hurt herself, which is why she is unstoppable. "See? Love is weakness." The Queen requests Emma say "hi" to sleeping beauty. She then asks if it's sleeping daddy.
Furious, Emma slices the Queen's cheek. Emma realizes what she's done and turns to Regina in worry. Regina is surprised to report that her face is fine. The malevolent monarch fails to heal her bleeding wound. Emma charges the Queen, who teleports before Emma can strike. Emma looks down at the sword and realizes: "We can kill her."
After the teaser, the Evil Queen re-materializes across town, still clutching her wounded cheek. Mr. Gold's sudden appearance startles the Queen before she can process out what this means. The Queen states she's not in the mood for a drive. Gold comments that it seems Emma found a weapon. He lets Emma's pilfering slide so he can focus on finding his son. "And you," he steps closer to the scarred Queen, "can prepare to die." With that, he slaps a glowing golden bracelet onto her wrist, managing to catch her off-guard. He states that now, no matter where she goes, he can find her. She fails to remove it. Gold adds that what she did to him - and Belle - was unforgivable. So he promises that once he finds his son if Emma has yet to dispatch of the Queen, he will finish the job himself. In a cloud of red smoke, he leaves the Queen reeling as she stares down at her cuffed wrist.
"So it can hurt the Queen without hurting Regina," David repeats back at the loft, having received the rundown of events, while Emma tends to a sleeping Snow. Emma and Regina agree that the Evil Queen needs to die. When David leaves to take a phone call, Hook asks his girlfriend if she's alright. She responds that, in this case, the cliche is true: "I was... born for this." And Hook accepts that. Henry begs his mother not to do it. Emma shoots a look to Hook and Regina, signifying that she and her son need a moment alone. They join David in the other room while Emma tells Henry she can stop the Queen. With the sword, she can save them all. Henry points out that the sword kills her, then asks how she knows that this isn't how she dies - by facing her. "What if she's the figure under the hood from your vision?" Emma points out the savior can't miss out on every battle she thinks is her last. Henry exclaims that she's also his mom, before storming upstairs. Emma looks down at her shaking hand. Flashes of the fated battle follow: Emma brandishing a sword against a mystery assailant on Main Street, at some point soon. The battle doesn't go well, but Emma tries her best to ignore this as she clenches her fist to force the visions to stop. David enters and informs her that Leroy spotted the Evil Queen on Main Street. David and Hook leave, with Regina eager to follow along with Emma. Emma stops the Mayor and tells her that she can't because the only way for her to hurt the Queen is to hurt herself and she can't let her do that. "I've got this," she assures, "You just stay here with Henry." Regina is not happy about this but wishes Emma luck in defeating her evil half. Emma nods before following the men.
Emma leads Hook and David past the Clock Tower. Only the Evil Queen isn't there. A cry for help distracts the heroes. At Granny's Diner, the trio finds Jasmine bound to a chair. Emma approaches her. The Queen emerges from the backroom with the genie lamp, warding Emma off with a wag of her finger and an "ah-ah." "This is about me. It's always about me!" the Queen roars as she parks herself next to her hostage. Emma says the Queen's damn right as she prepares to wield the sword against her. The Queen telekinetically chokes Jasmine, assuring Emma that she can snap Jasmine's neck before she gets closer.
Emma draws back a bit. The Evil Queen relinquishes her grip. Jasmine catches her breath. The Queen rubs the lamp, causing orange smoke to fire from the spout. The genie takes shape. Aladdin looks to Jasmine and the Queen in shock at the positions they're both in. Hook exclaims, "What the devil?!" The Queen informs the pirate that it's not the devil, but rather, her genie. Aladdin apologizes to the heroes. "I believe I have three wishes," the Queen goes on, stepping out in front of Jasmine and the genie. Aladdin encourages her to go ahead and wish, for they always come with a price. The Queen is well-aware of this, which is why she's not going to wish for something for herself. Instead, she's going to give Emma something she's always wanted. Something she confided about to Aladdin.
To Emma's shock, the Evil Queen says she "hears everything" including Emma's wish that she wasn't the savior. To Aladdin's dismay, the Queen wishes" that Emma Swan's wish to have never been the savior... be granted." The genie holds off the inevitable for as long as he can. Emma charges towards the Queen. Her loved ones call out. The Queen smiles as Aladdin can't fight the wish any longer. The genie outstretches his arm and with that Emma vanishes. Sword and all. "What happened?! Where did she go?!" Hook yells. He and David look horrified that Emma has disappeared into thin air upon the wish being granted. The Queen's smile grows in the wake of her victory.
Act Two takes us to the Wish Realm, where Emma blows out her familiar birthday candle. The camera pulls out to revel Emma in a pale-pink ball gown surrounded by the royal guests that fill the Castle on behalf of her birthday. Emma turns to an aged Snow White and King Charming with a wistful "Mommy… Daddy…" Wish Grumpy begs the princess to tell them what she wished for. Granny and the other guests also seem eager to find out. Emma's smile can't help but grow as she responds, "Not a thing. Everything I could ever want is right here." Her parents are touched to hear this. Granny snaps her fingers to signal for the guards to open up the room's extravagant doors. Caterers enter with more food. The guests congregate around them. Emma finds herself moving beyond the table, and Queen Snow White approaches her to one side in worry. Queen Snow asks what is bothering her daughter as King David joins them. Emma admits, last night, she dreamed the Evil Queen did cast her curse and she was "the savior" as her parents told her.
Snow reminds her daughter that the Queen's defeat avoided all that. Princess Emma knows this. She elaborates on her dream, explaining how she was in this strange fantastical land unlike any she's ever seen before and they all were still fighting her. The King and Queen don't know how to respond to this. Charming assures the princess that it was only a dream. Emma recalls waking up and finding "this" under her bed. She takes out the sword from her Storybrooke visions with the red jewel in the hilt. Princess Emma doesn't know how to hold it. Snow figures that one of the servants must have put it there, recalling how they cleaned the armory. Henry interrupts them by calling out "oh no" as he rushes to join.
Henry asks if he missed his mother's birthday celebrations. Princess Emma doesn't seem to mind. Henry explains that he was practicing for tomorrow and lost track of time, begging that his mother forgive him. She does "of course" and proclaims she wants his knighting ceremony to be perfect. "You are going to be the noblest knight the kingdom has ever seen." Henry's pride turns to confusion when he sees the sword in her other hand, asking if it's for him, for tomorrow. Without waiting for an answer, he takes it. Emma turns to her parents and not knowing what to say. The knight-in-waiting lifts it, stating that his name is Sir Henry, Knight of the Realm, and he will defend them all.
The Wish Charmings smile with pride. Emma says his father would be very proud of him. "I wish... I wish I'd known him," Henry turns to a portrait on the wall of adult Baelfire. Emma promises her son that he watches over him. David believes they have some celebrating to do, holding out his arm for his daughter to take. As she does, he adds that the party's only begun, and she replies with, "Of course, daddy," as she heads off with him. Snow begs Henry to put the found sword away, for this family is done fighting. She follows her husband and daughter towards the gift table. Henry smiles at his new weapon.
Back in Granny's Diner, Henry Mills joins the heroes and demands to know where his birth mom has gone. Hook has no idea. Regina hopes that they're trying to figure it out - after all, she didn't stay behind so that they could screw things up. David requests that she take it easy on them, for it was the Queen. Regina snaps that she knows who it was, then suggests that the prince use some of that defensive energy to find out where Emma is. Regina declaims her father must have some idea. David yells in response that, yes, he is her father, but that doesn't mean he knows everything. Instead, he turns to Hook, pointing out that he lives with her now, and asks if he has any ideas. The pirate cries that if he had an idea then he would have "bloody well" mentioned it by now, only for David to ask how he's able to share a home with someone and not know their secrets. "Because we don't stand around and talk about what happens when a bloody genie appears, mate!" Hook barks. Jasmine insists the heroes stop fighting. Regina realizes this is what the Evil Queen wants. She recalls how she said they would tear themselves apart and that's what they're doing. "The Evil Queen has thrown a lot of punches today," the Mayor states, "But now... I think I know a way to throw one back." She smiles as an idea formulates, and the others look intrigued.
Over at the pawn shop, Mr. Gold rushes towards his magic globe. Combining his and Belle's hair, he creates the essence of their son. Gold pours the potion onto the globe. Black swirls begin to form a map, but disperse and evaporate. Gold worries.
Meanwhile at the Mayor's Office, the Evil Queen admires the genie lamp as Aladdin is made to mix cocktails for her. Aladdin asks his mistress if she's sure she wants an appletini, wondering if it's not a little on the nose even for her. The Queen replies that she likes what she likes, and so the genie goes to pour. As he fills the apple-wedged glass with the red alcohol, he asks if this is her wish. She makes clear that it's a request. She threatens him to heat it. Aladdin views this concept as ambitious. With a smile, the Queen poofs behind her genie in the usual purple cloud. She corners him and points out they can explore in this "master-genie relationship." She trails her fingers down the exposed parts of his chest. "Ambition met," he hands her the appletini (not repugnant to her advances). Regina then bursts in, to the Queen's only mild surprise, and asks her evil twin if she's having fun in her office. The Queen replies that she was about to, and places a hand on Aladdin's muscular arm with a wink. He utters, "Ew." Regina states that she's not there for the Queen's perversions - rather, she's there to get Emma back.
The Evil Queen grabs the lamp, assuring the Mayor she will not get a hold of it, but, even if she did, one can't undo wishes. "Sadly true," Aladdin adds, and the Queen, smiling with her appletini in tow, kicks out a chair for Regina to take a seat. Her Majesty offers Regina her drink and wants to give thanks where thanks are due. Regina asks what the hell the Queen's talking about. The vile villainess snatches the lamp and re-positions behind the desk, telling Aladdin to be a dear and mix her another drink. He goes to do this as Regina moves forward. The Queen replies that her better half shouldn't forget: she knows her better than anyone. She is her. And there was a time when all she wanted was to tear Snow and Charming apart and kick Emma Swan out of her town, and she just did both. She cackles and raises her glass in an attempt to toast, "To you. To me. To us."
Regina looks like she might clink glasses with her serum counterpart, but then her smile becomes a grimace. She places her drink down on the desk. The disappointed Queen states that that's why Regina will never be happy - she's won, and she can't even admit it. If she could, she'd see that victory feels luxurious, and, to prove this, the Queen returns to sitting on the mayoral chair, holding both the lamp and her beverage with her feet once again raised. "Yes, I may not be able to get a hold of that genie lamp," Regina responds, "But you're right. We are the same person, which means... you're not the only master of the lamp." This realization thrills Aladdin. The Queen utters, "No." Aladdin utters, "Yes." Regina commands, "Genie of the lamp, I wish to be sent to the same place as Emma Swan." "No!" the Queen begs. A delighted Aladdin tells his other master that her wish is his command. Flaying his arm and used his genie magic to make it so. Regina vanishes off to the Wish Realm. The Queen bangs down on the desk and lets out another cry of, "No!" as her anger forces her to expel luxury and return to her feet. It's too late, though. Her second wish is gone, and so is Regina.
In the Wish Realm, Regina calls out for Emma but the only sound she hears is whistling. Through the trees, Regina spots Stealthy leading a line of dwarfs to the mines, chiming their "Heigh-Ho" tune. Relieved, Regina calls out to them with a smile as she approaches the road. Grumpy and the others turn in shock as Regina explains she is looking for Emma. She asks if they've seen her. They don't reply, annoying her. She asks again. Grumpy exclaims, "The Evil Queen is back!" Regina assures them that they don't understand. They flinch as she steps towards them and proclaims that she's not the Evil Queen anymore. Regina calls after the dwarves as they retreat to the Castle to warn Queen Snow and King David that "The war is not over!"
Act Three begins with Regina searching for Emma in the Wish Realm. At a forest crossroads, she finds a magnificent statue built to honor Queen Snow and King David. Regina's laugh catches in her throat when she reads the pedestal's plaque which reveals this site to be the spot where Snow White and the prince heroically defeated the Evil Queen. "Seriously?" Regina asks amused. Before Regina can give it much more thought, she hears someone humming "someday my prince will come." Regina follows the melody and finds Emma, her gown now accompanied by a fur-trimmed cloak, a flower basket on one arm, and a large daisy in her glove-covered hand. The princess sniffs it before going to collect more from her beautiful forest garden. As she emerges, Regina exclaims Emma's name in shock.
The princess backs away in terror of the Evil Queen. Regina realizes Emma doesn't remember her. Emma claims to know exactly who the banished women is and hides behind a tree. Regina assures her friend they didn't, that none of this is real. Emma is certain that the Queen is no one's friend, with her father having said that she was a liar. Regina promises it is the truth, adding that where they're from they share custody of a son. This just confuses the princess further. Regina admits that it's complicated, but the point is that she risked her life coming to this world because, "You're the savior. And your family needs you."
After a moment of silence, an arrow flies past Regina's head and into the tree that Emma hides behind. Regina turns to see Queen Snow, bow in hand with King David. Charming exclaims that this is impossible for she was banished. Snow chimes in that the fairies saw to it that Regina could never return, so there's no way she can be there right now, but all Regina can utter is, "Snow... David..." as she adjusts to their elderly appearance in the wish realm. The King demands that she show some respect for the correct form of address is "your majesties." Regina finds herself amused once more as all she can bring herself to point out is how old they are, and Snow retorts that she can taunt them all she wishes but they will never back down from protecting their people.
"Emma, these... these people aren't real," Regina then tries, turning back to the princess. Emma asks her mom and her daddy to please help. Queen Snow and King Charming draw their weapons. Regina tries to convince the former savior that they're hallucinations; a fake reality. Charming, aiming his sword, demands that Regina step away from his daughter, spurring her to exclaim that Emma has to believe her. Emma refuses to though, and so the aim of David's blade grows truer. He recalls how it banished the Queen from the kingdom once before and now would like to make it permanent, at which Regina begs Emma to see that this isn't the real her and tries to incur some small part of her that must know it. Regina begs the meek princess. David swings his sword and so she yells, "Dammit!" as Regina's forced to make herself vanish in a flurry of purple smoke. With the "threat" that had escaped, King David turns to his wife in extreme vexation.
Back in Storybrooke, David Nolan doubt he can wait in the loft while the Queen is out there with more wishes. Hook implores his mate not to worry because Regina will be back with Emma soon enough. David wonders what happens after that, asking what's to stop the Queen from making another wish that sends them someplace even worse. He then barks that she has done too much damage to this family and vows not to wake his wife just to tell her that their daughter is missing. After a deep breath, he declares that he's going to get that lamp. Hook stops and assures him that there is nothing he wants more than to make the Evil Queen pay for what she did to Emma, but points out that they are outgunned. They don't have magic, nor do they even have that sword which they thought they could use to defeat her; they need a plan. Jasmine, steps in and says, "So... any thoughts on this plan?" She adds that she can't bear to think about what the Queen is doing to Aladdin. Hook knows the feeling. Noticing a look on his father-in-law's face, Hook asks David what he is thinking. David tells him to go to the sheriff's station. "Meet me there in one hour. The Evil Queen's reign ends today."
Back in the Wish Realm, Regina teleports herself to the abandoned ruins of the Evil Queen's palace. She walks through her old quarters in disgust at the tatters they were left in. She follows a familiar giggle to the dungeons. "There you are!" cries Wish Rumpelstiltskin off camera. "Come to see old Rumple, 'ave ya'? Who are ya'? Come... closer." The Dark One startles the approaching Regina by appearing rather suddenly at the bars. He loudly recognizes her as the Queen, shrieking that the apprentice is "back again!" to see the old master. He rattles his cage.
Regina asks for his help. Wish Rumpelstiltskin why he would help her, his greatest student and failure, and begins to moan about his Dark Curse - his most precious of curses - which she failed to cast. He is down on the floor now, pointing up at her in anger. Regina looks down at him and assures him that that wasn't her. She explains that she's not the Evil Queen in this reality, which she also says isn't even a reality. Even he's fake. This intrigues Wish Rumple. Regina tells him how a wish created this world to trap Emma. Rumple utters the name with familiarity in his mad voice. He utters it again and then arrives at the gleeful conclusion that Regina speaks of the savior. "Oh, perhaps I can help you after all... for a price." Regina laughs, reminding him that he's not even real.
Wish Rumpelstiltskin rises, and offers his vast knowledge on saviors in exchange for one "teeny tiny" thing: his freedom. Regina refuses his offer, claiming that it's not worth it and the world is better with him behind bars. Rumplestiltskin asks what's the harm of letting a not real him out of a not real prison into by Regina's own admission a not real world.
Regina knows that even if he has a point, not to make a deal with him, in any realm. Wish Rumpelstiltskin reminds Regina that she's the reason Emma became the savior in the first place, since every savior needs a villain. For Emma that is the Evil Queen, "Not this pathetic, deluded creature I see before me." Rumpelstiltskin adds if the Queen shows the princess her inner darkness, the savior will be reborn. However even if Emma wakes up, he knows Regina does not know how to get back to Storybrooke. Regina demands to know how the knows the name of her town. He dismisses her question with a giggle and the promise of getting her a magic bean. The price? His freedom. Regina agrees and releases him from the cell.
After setting a date to meet tomorrow at noon by the lake, Wish Rumpelstiltskin wonders why "you don't exactly inspire fear anymore." Wish Rumple adds that Regina should dress the part of an Evil Queen. With that, Regina transforms her Land-Without-Magic outfit into one of her dark dresses. "How's that?" she asks. The Dark One squeals and jumps with delight. He encourages her to "Be evil." Rumple giggles as she leaves the dungeon.
At the start of Act 4, Belle holds a teddy bear, longing for her son. Belle sits on a bench, staring out at Storybrooke's lake at nighttime. Gold utters her name. She looks up at her husband and, despite her less than thrilled expression, he says that she looks well. "Considering." She asks if he's referring to the fact that he sped up her pregnancy, then revealing that the fairies sped up her recovery too, which, she clarifies, does not excuse anything. The beauty will not tell him where she sent their son. Gold reveals that he's gone. Belle turns to him, confused and worried. Gold explains he used their hair strands - their essence - to track him. "He's not here. He's nowhere."
The Dark One removes and sends away the magical bracelet from his surprised wife's wrist. Gold says his son's safety is out of his control. While intrigued, Belle does not respond. Gold doesn't blame her for not taking his "word for it." He hands her his cell phone to call the convent. Using her own phone, Belle calls the nuns. But when she asks to speak to Mother Superior she gets frighting news. She admits Gold was correct: "Something happened."
Over in King Charming's ballroom, Princess Emma waits with her parents on the dais. Granny, Stealthy, and the dwarfs are among the many noble guests. Queen Snow White takes her nervous daughter's hand and assures her that everything will be fine. Snow White adds that they defeated the Evil Queen before and can do it again, but for now wants to focus on Henry's big day. Emma is comforted, says she doesn't know what she'd do without her parents.
The herald presents "his royal highness" Prince Henry, and trumpets mark the entrance of the boy who is about to become a knight. A pair of guards open up the doors, and there he stands, kitted out in golden armor and carrying his helmet under one arm. Princess Emma nods to him, proud, as her son stands at the entranceway and stares out at the spectators. The princess whispers how grown up he looks. Snow smiles, right before Henry begins to walk down the aisle created by the bowing guests. Regina, still dressed for her role as the Evil Queen, watches from behind the doorway and looks as proud of her son as Emma does as he completes his walk to the central structure. Two guards block her view by closing the doors. Queen Snow unsheathes King David's sword in preparation. Prince Henry reaches the dais and kneels.
Queen Snow White asks "Do you, Prince Henry, undertake to accept the accolade of knighthood?" The prince looks up at his royal relatives and replies, "I do". King David asks if he shall conduct himself, in all matters, as befits a knight of this realm. "I will," he replies, and David winks. Just as Queen Snow dubs the new knight, Regina burst into the ballroom in all her malignant glory. "Sorry I'm late," she says emulating Snow and Charming's wedding by gliding down the aisle, to the fear of all those in attendance. Wish Doc turns to his brothers to exclaim, "It's the Queen! Run!" But there's no chance to run. The "Evil Queen" telekinetically sends the two guards that charge her, weapons in tow, flying across the ballroom. The guests gasp, while Snow clutches David's sword and exclaims that Regina's not the Queen anymore. Before she can call her stepmother an evil witch, Regina freezes the king and queen.
Channeling her evil self, Regina declares "Look at them! Missing out on this… happy, happy day. I vow to destroy their happiness if it is the last thing I do. Princess Emma, terrified, steps forward and begs Regina not to hurt her parents. Regina retorts that hurting them is the point unless they know of some hero who can stop her. Emma's momentary hesitation gives Regina hope. However the princess squashes it when she kneels before the Queen as she pleads for mercy.
Regina, annoyed, implores the "princess" to find that hero. Emma, terrified and teary-eyed, is confused by the Queen's statement. Regina waits for Emma to stand up to her but she doesn't. With a flick of her wrist, Regina kidnaps Queen Snow and King Charming. Emma is left with the horror. Sir Henry asks his mother what they're going to do, at which the princess replies, "Don't worry, kid. I have this."
Meanwhile in Maine, it's ten past ten at night. Hook asks Jasmine where David is. Realizing the punctual prince is late, Hook and Jasmine worry. Over in the mayor's office, David slides a sword towards the Evil Queen and begs her to pick it up. When the Queen asks why, David replies that he wonders if she still has it, pointing out so far she's used Gold's magic, a genie, and an assassin. "Why don't you try doing something for yourself for a change, you snake?!" With this, he charges at her. But she sends him hurtling against the wall before he can strike her down. During the fall, he drops his sword. She approaches and questions his use of the insult "snake."
As the Evil Queen circles the prince, she asks if the imbecilic shepherd knows that he can't kill her. Turns out this was his plan all along - to get her to move away from the desk, giving him the chance to dash it. Before the Queen can react, David scoops up the genie lamp, telling her, "Thanks for the tip. I know I can't kill you. But I can do something much worse." He rubs the lamp's side. Aladdin appears indignant from the spout in orange mist. Thrilled to see David with the lamp, Aladdin asks David if he's his new master. With equal cheeriness, David replies, "Yeah, Aladdin, I am." The Queen glares at them.
At the start of Act Five, the Evil Queen warns them to not "dabble with forces you don't understand!" David assures her he will be quite careful. Aladdin chimes in that the prince's wish is his command, especially if it will hurt the Queen. The Queen looks indignant while the genie then reminds his new master that all wishes come with a price. David knows. That's why he won't wish for anything to do with his family - no, the only one paying the price is the Queen. "Genie," David says, "I wish... that the Evil Queen gets exactly what she deserves." The Queen is fearful. Then Aladdin flays his hand outward as he grants his master's wish... but nothing happens. The villainess is as surprised as the heroes. David asks what's going on. Aladdin doesn't know, assuring that he granted the wish. The Queen cackles, no, he didn't. "You wasted it. All I ever wanted was to rip your family apart and now look. Your daughter's trapped in a wish, your wife is slumbering forever, and you... you are all left alone. Don't you get it? You can't wish for me to get 'everything I deserve' because I already have it."
David roars that he will destroy her, picking the sword charging at her with it. This time, she levitates him off the ground, with a telekinetically choke. Charming drops the sword. "Look at you," the Queen beams with malice, "Such bloodlust! I always knew darkness would be a lovely shade on you." Jasmine and Hook burst in calling for David with Henry right behind. Jasmine hugs Aladdin in relief. The pirate aims his sword at the Queen and orders her to let David go. He points out that she's outnumbered, and Jasmine has the lamp, so she's lost. The Queen drops David to the floor, gasping for air. Now looking down on him, she exclaims that death is too good for him anyway, and she'd rather watch him suffer. With that, she poofs away. Hook lowers his sword. Jasmine rushes to David's side and helps him to his feet.
Over in the Palace, King Charming assures Regina her plan won't work, for they will defeat her as they always do. Regina retorts that's what she's counting on, with her two prisoners sitting on a wrecked piece of furniture with their hands tied. "Don't worry!" Emma enters, a box in tow, "She's not going to hurt you." She whispers to her parents that it will be okay. Regina is happy that the princess finally came to face her, claiming that she knew she'd find the hero in her. The Queen expresses interest in getting this over with, proceeding to conjure a fireball. Emma steps forward with her box. Regina wonders if it is a weapon. Emma bows in submission as she surrenders the key to her parents' kingdom, addressing her as "your majesty." Regina asks if she's serious.
Emma mumbles that she'd do anything to protect her parents, at which Regina extinguishes her magical flame in anger. Regina tosses the key to the kingdom aside. She turns around and yells in frustration that she wants her to wake up and to get her back to Storybrooke. "Storybrooke? Like in my dream?" Emma questions, not understanding how the Queen is aware of it. Regina fires back that the world she's in now is the dream. And now she has to wake her up. "I know you won't believe it, Emma, so... I really am sorry about this," Regina declares before plunging each of her hands into the respective chests of King David and Queen Snow. Emma cries out in defiance. Regina stands before her, clutching them. The princess weeps that she already gave her the kingdom - she gave her everything - and on her knees begs to know what more she could do.
A disgusted Regina responds the whimpering wuss can be the savior and stop her. When Emma doesn't respond, Regina exclaims that, if not, her parents die. To back her threat, she squeezes their hearts and makes it so that they writhe in pain. Emma weeps that she's "not a hero" or "the savior". The Queen assures Emma that she always fights when it matters. Regina squeezes the hearts again, causing the elderly royals even more pain. Emma continues to grovel. "Oh, come on, Miss Swan!" Regina rages. She asks if Emma wants her parents' blood on her hands. Exasperated, Regina squeezes too hard, crushing the royal hearts to dust. Regina stares hopelessly as Emma wails fill the ballroom.
Realizing that the cursed Emma couldn't fight her, Regina turns away, ashamed. Sir Henry, decked in armor, wields the sword he took from Emma the day before. Regina turns to Henry in surprise. He roars that she will pay for murdering his grandparents. Regina tries to explain. Emma rises and calls her son. Henry assures Emma that it's okay as he beckons for her to get behind him. She does but still cries out, fearing that something might happen to him too.
Sir Henry clarifies that he's got this, wanting to slay the murderous Queen with this new weapon. Regina shakes her head and assures, "I won't hurt you, Henry." "But I will hurt you," the young knight promises. Regina closes her eyes to accept her fate. Seeing Regina's willingness to sacrifice herself causes Emma to wake up. Henry throws his sword over his head in the same fashion that his grandfather and birth mother have in the past. Emma yells "Henry, stop!" Henry and the sword freeze when a red glow encompasses them. The sword remains in mid-air, a few feet from Regina's abdomen as she stands there astonished. Emma's hand still flayed after having performed magic to save her friend's life from their son. Both women are shocked. Regina finds herself calling out Emma's name as she hopes for some recognition. Emma breathes deeply in response, taking a look around. Regina states that she saved her.
Emma replies since Regina made the trip to do the same, "it's only fair, right?" Emma confirms she is awake, to her friend's relief. Emma touches frozen Henry's shoulder as she explains that when Regina couldn't hurt him, and when their son was about to kill and become everything she never wanted him to be, that's when she snapped out of it. Regina smiles. Emma turns to her dead parents in worry. "Oh, they're not real," Regina promises, "I didn't actually kill anyone," and Emma says she knows - she just needed to wake her. "Thank you. Although that was... very dark," the savior points out. She plucks the red-jeweled sword from its position in mid-air and says, "Come on. Let's go stop the real Evil Queen."
Said Evil Queen wanders down Main Street. The Queen comments that Storybrooke is almost tolerable. Seeing Leroy and Mr. Clark exit Granny's Diner, the Queen adds, "When the peasantry is hidden away." Frightened by the Queen's presence, Leroy whispers for his brother to call Charming. Clark fumbles with his cell phone before a great, thunderous glow emanates from within the diner. This confuses the Queen, while Leroy recognizes it is a portal. "We've been portaled!" he yells as he and Clark run down the road. Assuming that the portal marks Regina and Emma's return, the irked Queen sighs that that was faster than she thought. The Queen approaches the diner, ready to confront her returning foes. Yet, when the front door opens, it is an unknown hooded figure fated to kill the savior. The Evil Queen remains intrigued.
The Queen asks the approaching figure, "Who the hell are you?" The mystery villain outstretches their gloved hand, blasting the Queen to the pavement. She rises in fear while the figure makes its way down Main Street. The figure unleashes a trail of black smoke which soon grows and wraps itself around her. She stands there, trapped by the stranger's magic. The hooded figure transforms the Evil Queen into a cobra trapped in a cage. The figure makes its way down Main Street.
Act Six opens with Granny informing Belle and Gold that Mother Superior was found in the forest. Belle demands to know what happened. Blue wakes with a gasp. Belle crouches before her and utters her name, wanting her to tell them what happened to their son. The nun explains that it was dark and she fought as hard as she could but "she" took him. "Who? Who took him?!" Belle needs to know, with Granny worrying as well. Gold stares down at the fairy. Blue reveals the identity of Gideon's kidnapper: the Black Fairy. Gold realizes his wretched mother now has her hands on his and Belle's baby boy. Belle turns to him in utter shock, the both of them distraught. He looks to her, and then she looks back to Blue, eyes wide, not knowing what to make of all this.
Out by a lake, Emma tells Regina that Storybrooke felt like a dream, and now this place does. She elaborates that it was a good dream, but the person she was there wasn't her. The fighting and the pain are what makes her her, and she's good with that. Even if it means her end. Emma stares down at the sword that will kill her, still decked out like a princess while Regina sports Storybrooke attire. The savior then adds that that other person - the persona she adopted while she wasn't the savior - "kind of sucked." Regina agrees that singing princess Emma isn't her favorite model. Emma tries arguing that she didn't sing. Regina gives her a look. Emma adds, "That you saw," and they chuckle. Regina proclaims that they should get home, before looking around and asking where "he" is. Emma wonders to whom she is referring. Regina reveals that she agreed to let the Dark One out of his cage for a ticket home, to Emma's shock.
Emma fears he could be razing villages or something. Before Regina can respond, an insane giggle greats them. "Well, dearie," Wish Dark One exclaims, "On behalf of all Rumplestiltskins everywhere, I'm here to make good on my word." Regina then turns to Emma in a smug sort of manner. Rumple asks if the "princess" is sure she wants to leave this all behind. The look she purveys says it all though. Regina wants to know where that bean is. Rumple drops it into her palm, "as promised". He instructs that she need only throw it down and think about where she wants to go. Regina holds it up and inspects it. She thanks him. He quips that he's off to raze some fake villages. After he vanishes in a flurry of red, Regina turns to Emma with the bean in tow and asks her if she's ready. Emma nods, saying, "Let's go home."
Back in Storybrooke, Snow slumbers while David stands over her and questions what he has become. David tells Hook he wanted to execute the Evil Queen back in the Enchanted Forest but it was Snow who convinced him to show mercy, then asks if he's like his brother. Hook assures his mate that he's not though, for they all make mistakes and that doesn't change who they are. "Now go and kiss your damn wife." David sighs and places a hand on Hook's shoulder as a sign of thanks. Henry, Aladdin, and Jasmine run into the loft with the genie lamp. Jasmine approaches David and suggests that he could use a wish to break his curse with Snow. David, taking the lamp and thanking the princess, says that with the way wishes have been going today he's afraid it might make things worse. "No, the lamp is yours. You're the genie's new master now. I trust that you will be wise with this power," David declares, handing it back to her, and she thanks him.
Jasmine assures that she understands the risks but that she and Aladdin have to find Agrabah. Henry asks if she's sure that's a good idea. Jasmine assures that, whatever the price, she owes it to her people, and she's willing to make the sacrifice. "We both are," Aladdin adds, stepping forward, and then she takes his hand. Henry tells them both that they'll miss them. Aladdin tells him not to, for they'll be back. "Until then, give this to your mum for me. From one savior to another," he goes on, handing Henry his hero's scarab. Henry takes it intending to pass it on to Emma when she returns. Jasmine turns to Aladdin, the lamp in one hand and his hand in the other, and asks if he trusts her. "Always, princess," he responds, and she smiles, saying, "Then... I wish for you to take us to Agrabah." And, with that, Aladdin raises his hand. The two of them vanish. Back to their home realm - presumably. The heroes seem sad to see them go.
Over at the pawnshop, Belle tries to wrap her head around the fact that the Black Fairy is her mother-in-law. Mr. Gold reminds her that she's the one who entrusted their son to "that gnat". Belle sees little point in him trying to call her out on her mistakes after what he did to her. He swears that he was not the one to dose her with that aging magic. She stares at him. "I couldn't," he adds. Belle's not quite sure what to believe anymore. She then closes her eyes and shakes her head and asks "What have we done to each other? And what have we done to our son?" Gold steps forward at this, replying that they have to work together before it's too late. He places his hand on her arm and she lets him. Gold explains there are realms of dark magic beyond even his reach, where his mother lurks in the shadow. Belle asks where she took him. Rumple doesn't know, only being able to figure that it is a place of immense dark power where time works differently and nothing makes sense. This description worries Belle even more. He declares anything's possible. She demands to know what could happen to their son, but he can't bring himself to tell her.
Leroy enters the loft with a large object covered by a tarp and the announcement of "big trouble." The confused heroes stare at him. As he parks the large object down on the floor, David asks him what the hell it is. "That," Grumpy announces, ripping back the tarp to reveal a cobra in a cage, "is the Evil Queen." The heroes seem surprised as they stare down at the trapped, hissing cobra. Upon a moment of reflection, David realizes his wish came true. He turns to Hook and Henry as they wonder who did this to her. Leroy reveals that it was a guy in a hood. David knows of that kind of figure from Emma's vision, and then he asks the dwarf if he saw him. Grumpy cannot reply to the heroes' further perturbation. David snaps, "Did you see who was under that hood?"
The hooded figure enters the pawnshop. Gold and Belle turn in bewilderment. The parents are too concerned about their son's whereabouts to worry about the town's newest villain. As the mystery assailant enters. They realize what is going on. Gold remains with an arm around his wife, the pair in denial and shock, and then. The figure lifts back his hood and reveals himself to be Gideon. All grown up. "Hello, mother," he greets as Belle's face exhibits deep upset. Then, "Hello, father," to a devastated Rumple. Their son is a villain now, and he stands before them.
Over in the Wish Realm, Regina drops the magic bean into the ground, creating a portal back to Storybrooke. Regina and Emma join hands, ready to jump through it together and return home. As they approach the portal, an arrow flies overhead, forcing them to duck. It lands in the bark of the fallen tree beside them. Regina is about to ask what the hell is going on before a second arrow joins its twin in the same tree trunk. "Not another step, ladies!" calls a familiar voice, and Regina whips her head round in shock while Emma stares in disbelief. "No..." the blonde utters as Regina gets to her feet, adding, "It can't be." And then we see to whom the voice belongs - it's Robin Hood. At least this realm's version of him. He aims another arrow at the women. He then announces that this is a robbery, and Regina, entranced by her true love, begins to walk towards him. Emma utters her name while she utters Robin's, who exclaims, "Let's go! Off with the jewelry!"
With one eye on the portal, which is sure to close soon, and another on Regina, who continues moving in the direction of her pretend late lover, Emma tries to remind her friend of what she told her - that the people of this land aren't real. She repeats it - he's not real - and turns as the portal grows more violent, needing someone to go down it right away. It's like Regina can't hear the savior, though. More steps, accompanied by tears and an ignorant smile. Robin looks confused, shifting the aim of his bow from one victim to the other, while Emma yells that they've got to go. "Regina!" And then... the portal closes. It shrinks and closes in on itself and then it disappears. Regina continues to stare at him, that witless grin etched on her face, while he stares back at her with cold detachment, wanting only to rob her as his aim remains true. Emma looks to where the portal used to be and starts to distress about what on earth - or rather, the wish realm – they will do now.

- The title of this episode was revealed by Adam Horowitz via his Twitter account on October 14, 2016.[6]
- MUSICAL INSPIRATION: Adam Horowitz is a fan of the rock band Pink Floyd.[7] This episode shares its name with an album and song by the band.
Production Notes
- The oil painting of Baelfire[8] required Michael Raymond-James' approval.[9]
- REUSED FOOTAGE: The establishing shot of the Evil Queen's palace[10] is an altered version of a shot of the real palace in the Season Three episode "The Tower."[11] The foreground plate and the castle have been digitally altered to reflect the decrepit state of the castle, and CGI birds have been added to the shot. In addition, one of the mountains in the background has been enlarged.
- OBSERVATIONS: The river that Emma and Regina stop by is the same alterned location where Prince Charming and Snow White first decided to "take back the kingdom" in the Season One finale "A Land Without Magic." This can easily be seen from direction of the trees.[12] But it is not known if these two places are meant to be same since the latter does not have the Royal Castle behind and there seems to be no mountain.
- ABANDONED IDEAS: In the episode script, Hook says to David, "You are bloody Prince Charming and I'm Captain Hook. Not the other way around."[13] This line is not in the final episode.
- ABANDONED IDEAS: In the episode script, the scene where Emma first meets Regina in the Wish Realm is slightly longer, with Emma first line being "You. It's you... The Evil Queen. How is that possible? We defeated you."[14] In the final episode, she simply says "You... You're the Evil Queen."
- According to Adam Horowitz, Gideon's reveal as the figure underneath the hood was planned from the beginning of Season Six.[15]

- In the original version of "Beauty and the Beast" by Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve, the good fairy tells Beauty the story of how the wicked fairy attempted to murder Beauty (who is revealed to be the daughter of a king and therefore a princess) when she was a baby, planning to commit the murder in a neighboring forest. The good fairy considered taking Beauty away, but knew that the wicked fairy would just retake the child from her, without it being in her power to stop her. The fairy discovered that a merchant's baby daughter had died, so in order to protect Beauty, the good fairy took the dead girl away and left Beauty in her place. Similarly, in "Changelings," Belle (here the daughter of a lord who is the ruler of an unnamed kingdom) tasked Mother Superior with taking her newborn son away to protect him from Rumplestiltskin, the Black Fairy's son. However, in this episode, it is revealed that the plan failed, and a distraught Mother Superior reports to Belle and Mr. Gold that the Black Fairy abducted the baby in the forest, despite Mother Superior fighting as hard as she could to stop her.
