The President of the United States of America is both the head of state, and the head of government for the United States of America, a political union on the North American continent on Earth.
The office of the president was established by the ratification of the Constitution of the United States of America in 1787. Prior to the ratification of the Constitution, under the Articles of ConfederationWP, the presiding officer of the Congress of the ConfederationWP was known as the President of the United States in Congress AssembledWP, and over a dozen men served served in that position. There was no executive branch, and the President of the Congress was merely a legislative position. Under the Constitution, the executive branch was formed, and the first United States President was elected for a four-year term by a college of Electors, who were chosen at first by the states, and then by plebiscite.
