"It is your destiny!"
―Quint, Mega Man & Bass database

Quint (クイント Kuinto) is Mega Man from a peaceful future that was modified by Dr. Wily to fight against Mega Man in the present. His main weapon is Sakugarne, a digging robot that looks like a combination of a pogo-stick and jackhammer.

Although Quint serves the same role as the Mega Man Killers in the Game Boy games, and the four appear in the same stage in Mega Man V, Quint is not part of the Mega Man Killers.

Quint should also be not be mistaken for Rockman Shadow from the Rockman & Forte: Mirai Kara no Chōsensha, who was created at the same time period as Quint and is similar to him, and uses a weapon similar to Sakugarne.

History[]

Background[]

Tired of constantly being defeated, Dr. Wily stole an experimental time traveling machine called the Time Skimmer[1] from the Chronos Institute and traveled 37.426 years into the future [2][3] where Wily has reformed and Mega Man was converted back into a house keeping robot.[4][5] Recognizing this chance, Wily convinces his future self to help abduct the now defenseless Rock, who was then reprogrammed and modified into the fighting robot Quint.[5] With Mega Man himself on his side, Wily believed that he could not be defeated.

Mega Man II[]

Mega Man faces Quint as he attempts to reach Wily in the Wily Castle. The two battle but Quint flees before Mega Man could defeat his future self, possibly returning to the future [3], and leaves behind his weapon Sakugarne, which Mega Man takes.

Mega Man V[]

Mega Man faces Quint again onboard the Wily Star, this time defeating him. It should be noted that it is unknown if this Quint is real one or a copy, as several inactive copies are seen in capsules before his boss room, and Quint may have returned to the future after his first defeat.

In a possible future, Quint appears in a flashback during the events of the game where the main antagonist, Rockman Shadow, reveals that he is a prototype of Quint that was discarded for the real thing. Rockman Shadow looks completely identical to Quint, even wielding a pogo stick-like weapon similar to Quint's Sakugarne, however Rockman Shadow possess a buster that emits a beam saber, a weapon that Quint is not known to posses.

Strategy[]

Mega Man II[]

Quint is fought at the very end of the Wily Castle. Once the second wave Robot Masters (the ones from Mega Man 3) have been defeated, part of the floor opens up to a new room, where Mega Man will fight against Quint.

Attack Pattern[]

Quint is by far the easiest boss in the game, and one of the easiest in the entire franchise. He pilots his signature pogo-drill, the Sakugarne. His pattern consists of him using the drill to send out 3 sets of 4 rocks (2 on each side of him). However, these rocks don't go very far and can be ignored simply by being far from him. After this, he will jump at the player's position and repeat his pattern from there. Only his head will take damage. Unlike other Robot Masters, Quint will simply teleport away once defeated. He is never seen again in the game.

Weaknesses[]

Quint's main weakness is Hard Knuckle, which can easily hit his head and defeat him in 6 hits. Besides that, every other weapon except for the Mega Buster is a secondary weakness and can be viable against him, with Crash Bomb doing extra damage.

Mega Man V[]

Quint is fought inside the Wily Star as the second of four bosses coming from previous Game Boy titles. Rather than escaping like in the previous game, he actually explodes on defeat.

Attack pattern[]

Quint's pattern remains completely unchanged from Mega Man II. The only difference is that there are walls on the side of the arena, which technically makes Quint harder in this game as Mega Man has a bit less room.

Weakness[]

Quint is now weak to Photon Missile, which defeats him in 7 hits. The weapon also references his original weakness to Hard Knuckle, as they both have the same general concept of being slow but powerful. As with most bosses, Quint takes 3 damage from the Mega Arm.

Quint in Mega Man #20.

When Mega Man travels in time in Issue 20, Quint appears in both the Mega Man II and Rockman & Forte: Mirai Kara no Chōsensha events. Due to how brief his second encounter was, it is unknown if it was Quint or Rockman Shadow due to their similarities. Mega Man believed the second one to be the same person from the first encounter. His statements to Mega Man hint at his holding to a more fatalistic outlook.

During the crossover Worlds Collide, Quint has a cameo appearance in Issue 27 playing cards with Big the Cat.

Quint appears again in Issue 55 in Dr. Light's tachyon-induced visions of the future. He is first seen fighting Mega Man in front of the Chronos Institute. Dr. Light initially assumes him to be a Copy Robot, but finds Quint to be "more... familiar than that..." Later, Dr. Light sees a vision of Dr. Wily allying with his future self and turning Mega Man into Quint.

Trivia[]

NintendoPower34MegaManII

Quint(et) featured in Nintendo Power magazine.

  • Quint is red and white on the American and European box covers of Mega Man II.
  • Quint was referred to as "Quintet" on page 48 of Nintendo Power #34's Mega Man II article.
  • Quint's dislike of himself in his English Mega Man and Bass CD bio might be referring to the Mega Man of the present time. The Japanese version also mentioned that his dislike was of time paradoxes.
  • Though it may seem destined for Mega Man to become Quint and meet a poetic demise in battle against himself, this future represents only a possibility. As changes from the past ripple onward into the future, so too might the present stray from this set path.[7]
  • Quint's serial number varies depending on the source, being ambiguous if Wily kept Mega Man's serial number after remodelling him or if he gave Quint a new serial number.
    • In Rockman & Rockman X Daizukan and the Japanese version of the Mega Man & Bass CD database, Quint's serial number is listed as ???-???.
    • In the Dr. Wily's Robots 101 short by Hitoshi Ariga, Quint's serial number is listed as SVN.001 or "Special Variation Number." He is the only known robot in the franchise to be given an "SVN" number.
    • In the Mega Man: Robot Master Field Guide, Quint is listed as being DLN-001, likely due to him being a remodeled future version of Mega Man who is also DLN-001.
  • Quint has 32 HP in Mega Man II, which is unusual for a boss in the classic series games, with 32 HP later becoming a typical value with most bosses in the Mega Man X series, whereas bosses in the classic series tend to have 28 HP in the console games, 19 HP in the Game Boy games, and 40 HP in Mega Man 8.
  • Quint's fight in Mega Man II is one of the few major bosses in the classic series to lack a visible health bar or even boss music.
