Mia DiMaria is a young woman with high magical potential, which would better suit The-Powers-That-Be.[1] Nonetheless, she was recruited by Aiko Maki, who served The-Natural-Order-Of-Things, marking her with their scent. Because of this, The-Powers-That-Be forswore her, effectively stunting her magical potential.[2][3] When Aiko tried to fix this, Oblivion claimed Mia for himself.[4]

History

Mia was abandoned by her mother at the age of 2 and was placed at an orphanage. When she was 12, after a terrible week, she unwittingly used magic to place herself in a unique guardianship. She grew to become a hardworking student at Columbia University, excelling at every subject, but often drowning in her studies.[2]

Mia's accidental experiences with magic caught the attention of the Centum, an organization dedicated to studying magic from a purely scientific approach. Thus, the Ninety-Seventh Centivar, Aiko Maki, left Mia some clues to find the Library of Worlds. There, Aiko revealed the greater world of magic and science and offered Mia magical knowledge in exchange for observing Mia as she navigated this new world. While reluctant at first, Mia accepted.[2]

At the Library of Worlds, Mia met Dimitri Krakov and Wyn, who were alarmed to learn she had been recruited by Aiko.[5] Later, Aiko gave Mia her own apartment and a card with a significant balance for her to spend on whatever she wanted. One night, as Mia pondered on what to do with her newfound wealth, she was visited by Wyn, who gave her some quick lessons on magic. Afterwards, he asked her for aid in retrieving Dimitri, who had been captured by the Black Swans. Mia agreed to help and successfully bargained with the Swans for Dimitri's freedom. Excited about her performance, she asked Wyn when it would be possible to reach his level, forcing him to confess that, since she had been recruited by a Centivar, who served The-Natural-Order-Of-Things, this meant that The-Powers-That-Be, who represent everything perfectly magical and weird, would never welcome her.[3]

Meanwhile, Aiko regretted her decision and secretly met with the Living Tribunal to undo Mia's recruitment; however, the Tribunal refused. Hearing this, Oblivion intervened and told her he could make Mia whole by bringing her under his shadow. Aiko immediately refused that proposal, but Oblivion had already made up his mind and did it anyway. The journey cost Aiko both of her eyes and, when she told Mia about it, it cost her their friendship as well.[4]

Some time later, still "in the cross-hairs between The-Powers-That-Be and The-Natural-Order-of-Things", Mia was asked by Doctor Strange to reach out to Juliet Marcos, who also had an affinity for magic, and help her out navigate her newfound powers.[6]
