History
Karanthes was a priest of Ibis who was driven from Stygia by the forces of Set and lived in exile in Nemedia. He hired Red Sonja to steal a page from the iron-bound Book of Skelos from a temple in Messantia.[2] He aided her in returning the page to her but gave it up when Conan arrived, demanding he hand it over.[3]

Notes
- Karanthes appears to be an adaptation of "Kalanthes of Hanumar, priest of Ibis", mentioned several times in The God in the Bowl by Robert E. Howard, published in 1952. This version of the character was created by Roy Thomas and Frank Thorne and introduced in Conan the Barbarian #7 (July, 1971) for Marvel Comics adventures of Conan the Barbarian.
- A different character, Karanthes, was created by Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway in Conan the Barbarian: The Horn of Azoth (February, 1990), which was basically "Conan, King of Thieves", an early script for the movie Conan the Destroyer (1984), with a few changes of names to avoid confusion.[4] In the movie and its adaptation in Marvel Comics Super Special #35 (December, 1984; written by Michael Fleisher and penciled by John Buscema), the role of Karanthes was held by Taramis, Queen of Shadizar, herself loosely based in part by Taramis, Queen of Khauran, created by Robert E. Howard in "A Witch Shall be Born" (Weird Tales; December, 1934)
