I told you, this is how it starts... this is how it always starts. Someone has to light the fire.

Captain America[source]

History

Early Life[]

The android Jim Hammond originated during World War II and fought alongside the contemporary super-soldier Captain America. He had the capability to engulf himself in flames, earning him the moniker of the Human Torch.[2] At some point, Jim killed Adolf Hitler.[3]

When the extra-dimensional, time-travelling mad genius the Maker initiated a systematic campaign of elimination, prevention, assassination, and apprehension targeting superhumans perceived as threats to his grand designs of reshaping Earth to align with his vision, the Human Torch, like many others, would be affected. His body would be encased in order to prevent him from flaming, while the Maker would gain possession of his brain, subsequently depositing it within one of his numerous repositories as an artifact.[4]

Joining the Ultimates

Years later, the Human Torch was freed from his confinement by Captain America at the time when he, Iron Lad, and Doom raided Damage Control and fought the H.A.N.D. agents.[2] After being rescued, the Human Torch's body still needed some time to be fully repaired.[5]

Jim later took part on the Ultimates' mission to rescue over a dozen super-powered prisoners from a Damage Control black site. Unfortunately, the rescue was actually a trap set up by the Hulk who attacked the Ultimates with his Immortal Weapons. The Human Torch fought against Uranium Brother #235 and was quickly defeated after being unable to burn him. Jim and the rest of the Ultimates were then taken out of the battlefield by Doom, who wasn't fast enough to prevent the death of Iron Lad.[3]
