Jean Grey (Earth-71259)

When Jean Grey was a child she witnessed Annie Richardson being hit by a car. The emotion that Jean felt as she held her dying friend awakened her own latent powers and she experienced Annie's own emotions as she died. This was felt by Charles Xavier using Cerebro and the Phoenix Force itself. Travelling to the psychic plane she retreated to wait for the return of Annie, and stayed there for an unknown length of time, until she was visited by Charles who convinced her to return because her parents were missing her. She spent years training to use her abilities under Charles, who began to restrain her powers when he realized they were too powerful, and first joined the other X-Men in rescuing Henry McCoy who was captured by Conquistador, after the rest of the team became overwhelmed and ruined his mind ^[1]
