History
James "Bucky" Barnes was a soldier in the US 107th Infantry Regiment who was among the Allied soldiers captured by Hydra during the fighting in Italy and were placed in an Austrian Hydra facility. Unbeknownst to Barnes, his friend Steve Rogers had received from Howard Stark a suit of powered armor dubbed the Hydra Stomper. Rogers and Captain Carter, SSR's Super-Soldier organized a rescue of the POWs from 107th, during which Carter specifically looked for Barnes among the prisoners. After she led them out of the facility, Rogers arrived by air in the Hydra Stomper Armor to provide support against heavy artillery, greatly surprising his old friend Bucky. Bucky and several other escaped POWs then formed the Howling Commandos, a unit that assisted Captain Carter and Hydra Stomper in SSR operations throughout the rest of the war.[1]
Near the end of the war, Captain Carter, Hydra Stomper and the Howling Commandos went on a mission to capture Hydra leader Johann Schmidt. Bucky almost fell during the boarding of Hydra train, but was saved by Carter, who grabbed with with enough strength to almost rip his arm off. However, they were lured into a trap and the train exploded, seemingly burying Steve and the Hydra Stomper Armor under an avalanche of snow. Grieving, Carter interrogated Doctor Zola about Schmidt's base at Castle de Krake and led the Howling Commandos on a final decisive strike against Hydra. Inside, she and Stark separated from Howling Commandos, who found Rogers alive and freed him. The Tesseract was no longer there to power the Hydra Stomper Armor, but Steve told his friends to put him inside regardless and charge it with conventional electricity, which would only provide enough for a very short time.[1]
Meanwhile Schmidt used the Tesseract to summon an interdimensional monster. Bucky and the rest of the Howling Commandos eventually reached it and opened fire on it, but the monster only got enraged and started destroying the entire castle. Rogers used the Hydra Stomper Armor to get the Howling Commandos out of the collapsing structure while Captain Carter sacrificed herself to push the monster back inside the portal.[1]
Sometime prior to 2014, Bucky was appointed U.S. Secretary of State. He had also gotten married and had children.[2]Notes
- Sebastian Stan provided the voice of James Buchanan Barnes in the What If...? episodes "What If... Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?" and "What If... Captain Carter Fought The HYDRA Stomper?".
Trivia
- This version of Bucky, at the time he appeared as Secretary, should be around 97 years old, which is a lot for an unenhanced human.
