Necrosword
Necroswords are bladed weapons formed out of living abyss, though they usually manifest as a separate object instead of covering their wielder's body like most symbiotes. It is unclear whether all symbiotes can take the form of and/or manifest Necroswords, but they are particularly potent against divine opponents.
- Knull created the first symbiote, All-Black, which he wielded in the form of a black, red, or red-and-black sword made of living abyss.[1] Subsequent hosts such as Gorr; All-Father Thor, and Galactus often manifested Necroswords from it either as arm-blades or separate weapons.[2][3] Malekith manifested All-Black,[4] from the Venom symbiote during the War of the Realms, calling it the "Venom Blade" and "Symbio Sword".[5][6] Its purported true form, variously called the Annihilablade and the Planet Cleaver, is a massive double-bladed sword capable of effortlessly destroying planets and cleaving through stars.[7]
- Conan the Barbarian manifested a Necrosword from an unnamed symbiote he had bonded to while fighting Kulan Gath and the eldritch god Jhoatun Lau.[8]
- Eddie Brock manifested a Necrosword from the codex amalgam symbiote he bonded to, using it to kill Dark Carnage.[9] After taking Knull's place as the King in Black, Eddie was capable of using any symbiote he remote-piloted to manifest Necroswords at will.[10]
- Carnage forced the dwarf-lord Drorin Runehewer to forge a new Necrosword using All-Black as a template.[4] Although Drorin attempted to immolate Carnage using the full heat of the dwarves' forge, the symbiote assimilated the uru to complete the weapon, which it dubbed All-Blood.[11]
Alternate Reality Versions
Sony's Spider-Man Universe (Earth-688)
Knull had created a symbiotic sword which he always kept by his side, even when imprisoned within Klyntar.[12]
"What If... T'Challa Became a Star-Lord?" (Earth-21818)
In this alternate version of Earth-199999, Hela was killed by the Collector, who claimed her Necrosword and added it to his arsenal of weapons during his rise to power as an intergalactic crime-lord. When fighting Star-Lord, the Collector used the Necrosword to incapacitate T'Challa, but the helmet was badly damaged by Yondu's Yaka Arrow.[13]
Marvel Cinematic Universe (Earth-199999)
The Necrosword is a cursed divine weapon said to have been forged at the beginning of the universe. Possessing a will of its own, it grants its chosen wielder dark powers -- including access to the Shadow Realm and the ability to summon and control Shadow Monsters -- at the cost of slowly killing them. Gorr was chosen by the Necrosword following its previous wielder's death at the hands of Rapu -- an arrogant and callous god worshiped by his people -- and used it to embark on a deicidal rampage. However, the Necrosword was ultimately shattered by Thor Odinson and the Mighty Thor using the Thunderbolt and Mjolnir.[14]
Hela Odinsdottir's retractile horned helmet is also called a Necrosword,[13] and lets her conjure black weapons ranging from knives to swords to axes to skyscraper-sized blades at will.[15] Its relation to Gorr's Necrosword, if any, is unknown.
Notes
- The High Summoner of Arakko wielded a sword which is similar in many ways to a Necrosword.[16]
- The Necrosword manifested by Malekith in the War of the Realms was stated to be similar to All-Black in Thor (Vol. 5) #14, but was retconned to be a manifestation of All-Black in Carnage (Vol. 3) #9.
