History

Deathwings are large winged creatures that dwell in the heart of the Black Sun located in the midst of the Dark Nebula. They appear as solid black Pterodon-looking creatures who are immaterial shadow-beings but, despite this, are somehow able to grab their prey. Since their intangible nature makes them immune to physical attacks, only energy weapons or beings capable of projecting energy can harm or kill them. Their chill breath will strip flesh from the bones of beings. They can be summoned by the Dire Wraiths but cannot otherwise be controlled by them. A number of them were able to thwart Galactus when he attempted to devour the Wraith's star system (Wraithworld and the Black Sun).

Notes

  • The Deathwings who appear in many of the issues listed under Appearances are not true Deathwings. Instead, they are actually Dire Wraiths who have shape-shifted into forms resembling Deathwings. This is significant because these pseudo-Deathwings are far less powerful than the true Deathwings, with the Wraiths having been able to mimic their form but not their true nature. Among other differences, true Deathwings are immaterial shadow-beings while the pseudo-Deathwings were just as physical as the Dire Wraiths they truly were. Essentially, the pseudo-Deathwings were just jet-black Pteradon-like creatures whose forms the Wraiths assumed because they looked fearsome and enabled them to fly.
  • Also, the Deathwings who appeared in some of those issues were illusions, sometimes solid ones, that had been conjured up by Dire Wraith Witches. These conjurations were also far less powerful and less dangerous than true Deathwings would have been.
