Ace Coins[1] are large, red coins with an "A" engraved on them. They only appear in Super Mario Advance, as the successor to the Red Coins from the Challenge mode of Super Mario Bros. Deluxe.
There are 100 Ace Coins in total, five in each level. The player is required to obtain them to fully complete, or "ace," the level. Once every Ace Coin has been collected, the player's character receives an extra life. Ace Coins are often near risky areas where one of the playable characters can take damage or lose a life. Whenever a level is replayed, every collected Ace Coin becomes transparent and only rewards points when collected. If the player gets a Game Over in a level that has not yet been completed, they lose their progress of collecting Ace Coins within that level.
Ace Coins have a very similar purpose to Dragon Coins from Super Mario World and Advance Coins in World-e of Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3.
