Season 1[]
Season 1 has been compiled into a total of nine DVD releases, which include bonuses such as additional drawings of the characters by Yana Toboso and extra episodes. All 24 episodes feature the theme song "Monochrome Kiss" for the opening, though two different animations accompany it; the first ran from episodes 1-16, while the second ran from episodes 17-24. There are two different ending songs: episodes 1-13 use "I'm Alive!," while episodes 14-24 use "Lacrimosa."
Episodes 1 to 3 are based on the Black Butler Arc, episodes 4 to 6 on the Red Butler Arc, and episodes 13 to 15 on the Indian Butler Arc. Episodes 7 to 12 as well as 16 to 24 are non-canonical; this means they are not based on any manga content.

There are two different ending songs: episodes 25-31 and 33-35 use "Bird," while episodes 32 and 36 use "Kagayaku Sora no Shijima ni wa"—this is also the ending song for the 7th OVA.
