Goro Hayase (早濑 五郎, Hayase Goro) is Takeshi Hongo's rival and former best friend, Hayase always lost the races against Hongo by a small margin, making him gradually let his jealousy take over and surrendering to Shocker to become Scorpion Man (さそり男, Sasori Otoko) and beat Hongo once and for all.
Scorpion Man was a character who changed bodies with Daiji Igarashi when he and his siblings lost to the Kamen Rider impression punishment game. This allowed him to temporarily become Kamen Rider Live (仮面ライダーライブ, Kamen Raidā Raibu).
History[]
Background[]
Goro Hayase was Hongo's best friend and racing rival. Hongo always ended up beating Hayase by a small margin in races, although Hayase still considered Hongo as a friend, he was slowly getting carried away by the jealousy he felt for never being able to win. At some point, Hayase was kidnapped by Shocker but ended up joining voluntarily when he saw the opportunity to become a cyborg and beat Hongo.[1]
Operation M1[]
After joining Shocker, Hayase was turned into Scorpion Man and went to test his powers on Shocker slaves who were no longer able to work. He purposely lets Ito (one of the slaves) escape because he knew he would be a bait to lure Takeshi Hongo during Operation M1.[2] He followed Hongo, Ito and Ruriko and approached them saying he would help in the fight against Shocker, but it was all a lie to hand over Hongo's location and get Shocker to attack the location. While Takeshi was busy fighting off Shocker Combatmen, Ito was killed by one of Hayase's scorpions and Ruriko was kidnapped and taken to Scorpion Man's base.
After the attack, Hongo and Hayase went to save Ruriko, after arriving at the base they are attacked by more Shocker Combatmen and then Hayase reveals his true intentions in front of Hongo and transforms into the Scorpion Man. Hongo initially refuses to hurt his best friend, causing him to end up at a disadvantage in battle. However, he finally accepts reality and fights Scorpion Man, the Shocker mutant was not able to match Kamen Rider in the fight even with several Combatmen helping him and was easily killed with a Rider Scissors.[The Monster Scorpion Man]
Creation of Gebacondor[]
A portrait of Scorpion Man appeared lining a wall with those of the other original four monsters (Man Spider, Bat Man, and Sarracenian), in a Shocker base where Gebacondor was created with the strongest traits of the past monsters defeated by Kamen Rider.[The Blood-Sucking Monster Gebacondor]
Resurrection and attack on Toyo Atomic Energy Research Laboratory[]
Scorpion Man was resurrected by Shocker as part of the Revived Monster Army, a team made up of all monsters that were previously killed by Kamen Rider, he went to attack the Toyo Atomic Energy Research Laboratory alongside Bat Man so they could steal the laboratory's resources and increase the power of Shocker's Japanese branch (which was weak near the North American and European branch), but both were impeded by a force-field that protected the site, they returned to base and warned the Great Leader that they weren't able to completing the invasion, the Great Leader was furious and ordered the Shocker scientists to build the Barrier Destruction Ball, a bomb strong enough to break the force-field, however, this bomb would need a very strong monster to be hurled from a safe distance, causing the Great Leader to order the capture of a human qualified to be turned into that monster, that human was Ken Nemoto, a soccer player who was captured by Shinigami Chameleon and Man Spider and was turned into Tokageron. During a second invasion of the Toyo Atomic Energy Research Laboratory, Scorpion Man alongside the members of the Revived Monster Army and Tokageron faced Kamen Rider, but they were easily defeated and killed in the explosion of the Barrier Destruction Ball.[Tokageron and the Large Monster Army]
Kamen Rider vs. Shocker[]
Scorpion Man also made a brief return appearance in the crowd shot of the monster army of the Kamen Rider vs. Shocker movie, but did not actually have an active participation there, never actually reappearing after the initial group shot. [Kamen Rider vs. Shocker]
Super Hero Taisen[]
Scorpion Man was revived as part of Dai-Shocker in the Super Hero Taisen incident, led by Tsukasa Kadoya/Kamen Rider Decade, rivaling Captain Marvelous/Gokai Red and Dai-Zangyack. However, Rider Hunter Silva of Dai-Zangyack and Doctor G of Dai-Shocker overthrew their respective leaders and joined forces to destroy the Kamen Riders and Super Sentai. The two evil organizations united and faced off against the combined forces of the Super Sentai and Kamen Riders. During the final battle, Scorpion Man was killed by Kamen Rider OOO's finishing attack with his Medajalibur, the OOO Bash along with Hades God Dagon, Goaster, and Isoguin Jaguar. Super Hero Taisen Z[]
Scorpion Man was one of the monsters in a Space Shocker force led by Space Man Spider which attempted to capture Psycholon, clashing with the Go-Busters for it. Later on, that group faced a combination of Kamen Riders and Super Sentai teams that came to back up Kamen Rider Beast. Scorpion Man was last seen when he was attacked by Kamen Rider Hibiki, who used his Ongekibou Rekka on him. [Kamen Rider × Super Sentai × Space Sheriff: Super Hero Taisen Z]
Heisei Rider vs. Showa Rider: Kamen Rider Taisen feat. Super Sentai[]

He is briefly seen among the initial crowd surrounding the Riders and facing his old rival Kamen Rider 1 at the beginning of the final battle. [Heisei Rider vs. Showa Rider: Kamen Rider Taisen feat. In his secret pyramid base, after expositing about how his new army of monsters would take over the world, he commands the Grand Shocker troops to activate the machine that would bring them to life, only to be foiled by the arrival of the Battle Riders.
As the base gets demolished, Kamen Rider Black RX activates his Revolcane and slashes Scorpion Man. As his body gets engulfed in flames before he dies, he declares that the Riders haven't won and that Grand Shocker will live forever before exploding.
Personality[]
Although he was Takeshi Hongo's best friend, Hayase had a fragile psychological that made him gradually become a very spiteful person due to several race losses against Hongo. Bat Genome (バッゲノム, Batto Genomu) is Live's bat-based primary form accessed by using the Bat Vistamp in the Two Sidriver.
All of Live's statistics exceed that of Revi and Vice's standard forms. Compared to Kamen Rider Evil, Live has higher punching and kicking power but slightly lower jumping height and running speed. Live wields the Livegun as his primary weapon, which fires golden energy projectiles. Despite the Livegun being a ranged weapon, Live is skilled at using it in close combat. Live is also able to perform kicks that launch blasts of spiraling golden energy.
According to George, as Evil grows stronger, Live's power will also be increased by the same factor.
Bat Genome consists of the following parts:
- Live Bat Head (ライブバットヘッド, Raibu Batto Heddo): The head.
- Live Bat Echo (ライブバットエコー, Raibu Batto Ekō): The antennae. It reproduces echolocation utilizing the ultrasonic waves of bats and uses it as radar and flight control. The ultrasonic waves can also be used as a directed energy weapons and can confuse the target.
- Bat Sacred (バットセイクリッド, Batto Seikuriddo): The face armor. The strong armor that protects the face is a combination of a radome and visual equipment. In addition, the special shape functions as an aileron during flight and aids attitude control in the air.
- Bat Dispel Eye (バットディスペルアイ, Batto Disuperu Ai): The compound eyes. Even in situations where visibility cannot be secured, such as in the dark, it is possible to carry out activities like normal by visualizing the information obtained from the Evil Bat Echo.
- Versus Crusher (バーサスクラッシャー, Bāsasu Kurasshā): The oral cavity. By increasing the concentration of oxygen obtained by breathing and permeating it into every corner of the body, the motor functions of the user are dramatically improved and the speed of recovery from fatigue is accelerated.
- Bat Brandy Cross (バットブランディークロス, Batto Burandī Kurosu): The chest armor. The unique ability engraved with the symbol mark makes the user a bat warrior. This allows him to carry out his own justice by gaining high survivability and flying ability. In addition, it has a built-in Live System (ライブシステム, Raibu Shisutemu) that doubles the positive energy of the user and turns it into power, creating tremendous fighting power.
- Versus Genomic Suit (バーサスゲノミッスーツ, Bāsasu Genomikku Sūtsu): The reinforced suit. Deployed at the same time as the Versus Up, the genetic information of the species supplied from the Two Sidriver is reconstructed, and by wearing it in an enhanced shape, the user is transformed into Kamen Rider Live.
- Live Bat Robe (ライブバットローブ, Raibu Batto Rōbu): The robe armor. It is possible to thin the powerful energy supplied by the Two Sidriver and deploy it as wings for aerial combat. In addition, by applying this to attitude control, three-dimensional combat similar to dancing in the air is performed.
- Live Bat Shoulder (ライブバットショルダー, Raibu Batto Shorudā): The shoulders. The pure white armor has positive energy and is effective in counteracting the power of evil beings such as Deadmen.
- Live Bat Arm (ライブバットアーム, Raibu Batto Āmu): The arms. The energy supplied from the Versus Genomic Suit enhances the physical ability of the user. In addition, the Libracelets (ライブレスレット, Raiburesuretto) on the wrists enhance grip strength, improving punching power and the handling of the weapon.
- Live Bat Glove (ライブバットグローブ, Raibu Batto Gurōbu): The gloves. Special adjustments have been made to handle the Livegun removed from the Two Sidriver and they are good at fighting with a gun.
- Live Bat Leg (ライブバットレッグ, Raibu Batto Reggu): The legs. Utilizing their high impact absorption ability, they not only receive the enemy's attacks with the legs, but are protected from the tremendous shock they themselves produce, such as in finishing moves. In addition, movement sounds such as footsteps are minimized by combining with the quiet ability of bats.
- Live Bat Boots (ライブバットブーツ, Raibu Batto Būtsu): The boots. Equipped with a sole that has strong suction power, it is possible to walk on walls or ceilings. In addition, by concentrating energy, the finishing move Justis Finish can be activated.

Legacy[]
Though not as memorable as the bat/spider/cobra trio, there are scorpion themed kaijin and even Kamen Riders that appears throughout the franchise.
He is also the first of what would be considered the rival archetype.
Notes[]
- Scorpion Man was featured in the "monster gallery" accompanying the opening narration, following the opening sequence, from episodes 5 to 13.
- Since the full trope of what a Rider has not been established at this point, Scorpion Man could be considered the first Rider-like character who gains power for the sake of defeating the Rider, due to modifying his body and keeping his free will other than his desire for vengeance; possibly inspiring similar actual Riders later like Kaito Kumon.
